Launches of Smartphones From HTC, Samsung In April

If you are planning to buy a smartphone, wait! The month of April will see a number of smartphones being launched for the Indian market from leading handset manufacturers. HTC is leading the race by launching two smartphones from its recently announced One series.

The HTC One X will operate on Android v4.0 and will have a 1.5GHz quad-core processor paired with 1GB RAM. With 8 MP camera and Beats Audio on board, HTC is expected to price it around Rs 35,000.
The company is also launching the HTC One V that will have a single-core processor with 512 MB RAM but will also operate on Android IceCream Sandwich.

HTC is not alone as Sony Mobile (earlier Sony Ericsson) and Research-In-Motion are also planning to introduce a few smartphones. Announced early this year at Consumer Electronic Show, Las Vegas, the Sony Xperia S should be available at Sony World around April 7-8. This phone features a 12.1 MP camera with 1080p HD video recording, a 4.3 inch display, 1.5GHz dual core processor and 1GB RAM. This will run on Android v2.3 and will be upgradable to IceCream Sandwich later this year. The rumoured price of the Xperia S is around Rs 32,000. However, the company might reconsider the pricing considering the competition it'll get from the much more powerful HTC One X.

BlackBerry fans should expect Curve 9220, a mid-ranged BlackBerry smartphone with a 2.44 inch display and a QWERTY keypad to be announced in the month of April too. The other details available include a 2 MP camera, Wi-Fi and FM Radio.

Earlier this month, Samsung also announced that the Galaxy Beam - its Android smartphone with an integrated projector - will be available in the month of May. The phone will have a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor and a 15 lumens projector that will be capable to project videos and images up to 50-inch wide surface.

Google To Sell Tablets Through It's Own Online Store

Google plans to sell co-branded Android tablets directly to consumers through its own online store, the Wall Street Journal reports. This move comes in an effort to kickstart Android tablet sales, which are still nowhere near the iPad sales levels.

There’s no word on the price, but Google might subsidize the price of the tablet(s), making them more attractive to consumers and closer to the $199 price of Android-based Amazon Kindle Fire and B&N’s Nook Tablet. Google already tried this approach with smartphones, having sold its Google Nexus phone through its own online store, but it gave up on it after disappointing sales.

The tablets will be manufactured by Asus and Samsung, WSJ claims, but a Google branded tablet is a possibility, too. This fact alone makes it unlikely that Google would try the same approach again, but recent rumors that Google is working on a cheap tablet of its own give some credibility to the story.

Kindle Fire 6.3 Update Makes Ebooks More Social

The 6.3 Kindle Fire software version, released Thursday, lets device owners share favorite passages and notes from their ebooks on Facebook and Twitter. Passages and notes can already be highlighted and seen by other Kindle Fire readers viewing the same book, but Amazon wanted to bring the sharing and conversation online.

Among the new updates is a feature called Book Extras. This allows users to see supplemental material -- from character descriptions and a glossary of common terms and locations used in the book to author information -- without leaving the book. This feature can be accessed by tapping the top of the screen to bring up the toolbar and menu button, where Book Extras is located.

Some More Features Like :

>> Users who write, take notes, highlight passages and create personal documents within the device can store them in the Amazon Cloud and access them at any time via the Kindle Fire.

  • Amazon also announced an upgrade for its Kindle Fire browser, Silk. The browser can now load certain text on a website and isolate it from the rest of the crowded page.

  • "Silk will load the body of the page in a reading-optimized, single screen view (even for multi-page articles),"

  • To update your Kindle Fire, users should connect to a Wi-Fi network and tap the Quick Settings icon in the upper right corner of the device to "Sync." Updates should be performed when the device is fully charged.

Verizon Plans Wireless Video Service

Racist Tweets Result in 56 Days in Jail

Ten days after posting racially offensive comments on Twitter during a soccer match, British student Liam Stacey has been sentenced to 56 days in jail. Stacey, 21, tweeted the comments on St. Patrick’s Day using the handle @LiamStacey9 after U.K. soccer star Fabrice Muamba, who plays for the Bolton Wanderers, collapsed on the field during a live televised soccer match. He’s dead!!! HAHA,” incited a host of backlash from other users, who found the remark offensive. Stacey responded back with more commentary, which is when the racial language ensued.

Stacey “admitted inciting racial hatred.” When authorities first arrested him under a “public order offense” the day after he posted the comments, he had tried to distance himself from the tweets, saying his account had been hacked.  In the U.K., police forces “regularly take action against those who post racially offensive remarks on Twitter,” though these actions by the police are rarely made public.

Upon initial questioning, Stacey told police he was drunk when he posted the tweets. When he received the court sentencing yesterday, “he broke down in tears,” according to the BBC. He has since also been suspended from his university until further notice.

Google Maps Now Includes Real-Time Traffic Data

The new-and-improved feature offers estimated travel times within Google Maps based on current traffic conditions. So, if you’re heading across town to meet a new yoga instructor you’ll be able to see how long several routes might take with no traffic, as well as how long the expedition might be based on the traffic conditions right now.

Depending on where you live, the shortest distance may take the longest time to travel depending on the time of day your journey begins. Traffic data is constantly refreshed where available, offering the latest possible information. Google previously offered traffic data, however, this is the first time data has been available as part of directions.

Data is gathered through third-party services and through information from Android users who have opted in to the My Location feature on Google Maps. Google would be able to tell, for instance, if there were several Android owners moving slowly on the freeway and determine that there was traffic slowing them down. The more people opting into the service in the area, the better the traffic information available will be. If you want to help provide data for the service and help your fellow driver in the process, you can do so by turning on the My Location feature for Google Maps on your Android phone.

5 Exciting Innovations That Will Change Computing in 2012

1. Advanced Touchscreen Control
As mainstream computing moves over to touch, one device that could help the transition with the multiple inputs that we're used to (such as the right mouse button or shortcut keys) is the "Ringbow." This finger-worn tool adds extra layers of functionality to touchscreen computing. It can be used to wirelessly click or right-click, open non-visible elements, such as menus, or be programmed to replicate the actions of any traditional input keys.

2. Eye Control
Tobi's OEM components could see laptops, peripherals and game consoles with built-in eye tracking technology as part of the user interface. You could gaze directly at an icon to open an app, browse files with your eyes, and stare at an item to zoom in on it. This tech also has the potential to make interfaces more adaptive. By just looking at a widget or icon, the item could become responsive and change or update the information displayed.

 3. Gesture Control
While Microsoft has launched Kinect for Windows and other computer manufacturers are experimenting with gesture recognition, startup XTR3D now offers an exciting cross-platform gesture control system. What's particularly interesting about XTR3D's solution is that it can work with any ordinary 2D camera (such as a webcam or forwarding-facing camera), so it could easily be deployed on existing laptops and tablets. The solution can read hand gestures up to 17 feet away, so you could open a file on your laptop by unclenching your fist, or swipe through your music library with a flick of your wrist from across the room.

4. Wearable Input Device

The Keyglove is a wearable, wireless, open source input device that boasts unprecedented flexibility and convenience for all kinds of computer applications. With exciting potential for gaming, design, art, music, device control and even data entry, the glove-based system's multi-sensor combinations mean it could be programmed to offer one-handed operation of many systems and software. In addition to the benefits a wearable mouse could offer a traditional computer user, the Keyglove could also be of interest to users of small screens, RSI sufferers or those with physical impairment.

5. Speech Control
Speech recognition is rapidly becoming mainstream. The iPhone's "Siri" assistant, Microsoft's Kinect, Google Search and even Windows 8 will all help to make talking to your computer or gadget as commonplace as clicking a mouse.

As voice recognition, artificial intelligence, semantics and natural language technologies continue to improve, we're interested to see how speech will be incorporated into interfaces. We predict that the press-a-button-and-speak method will become outdated as smart virtual assistants -- which offer an AI-powered, conversational style solution -- emerge.

Microsoft Metro Styled IE10 For Windows 8

The Redmond OS-giant have just detailed some of the new enhancements that will be featured on Internet Explorer 10(IE10) highlighting it’s Metro UI version. Expected this fall, the browser is set to be launched along with Windows 8 in its desktop and Metro versions. IE10 promises to provide a mush faster-fluid and safe browsing experience.

Brief About Internet Explorer 10

A Metro-styled IE10 will offer a faster and more fluid experience for use on touch-enabled devices. Microsoft has hidden the navigation menus and tabs in Metro IE10, allowing the web page to take up the full browser screen. The navigation controls only appear when you need them by swiping in from the top or bottom of the screen, right-clicking on a mouse, or pressing Windows key+Z on the keyboard. Other features such as an improved touch keyboard, integrated spell-check, and text search are also integrated for an enhanced browsing experience.Metro IE10 blurs the boundaries between the web and apps through Windows 8 features like snap, charms, and site pinning. Snap allows you to browse

IE10 while accessing another application side-by-side. Windows 8 charms, such as Search, Share, Devices, and Settings can be quickly accessed via the IE10 browser by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, pressing Windows key+C, or moving your mouse to the bottom- or top-right corners of the screen. And with site pinning, you can personalize your Windows Start screen with the sites you visit most.

Surveillance System Can Recognize Face From 36 Million Others in 1 Second

Face-recognition technology is rapidly evolving as evidenced by this new surveillance camera system. It can not only recognize specific faces, but is able to compare a single face to 36 million others in just one second.
The system, made by Hitachi Kokusai Electric and reported by DigInfo TV, was shown at a security trade show recently. It’s able to achieve its blazing speed by not wasting time on image processing — it takes visual data directly from the camera to compare the face in real time. The software also groups faces with similar features, so it’s able to narrow down the field very quickly.

When the system finds candidates that could be a match to the person being scanned, it immediately displays their thumbnails. The user can then review the archived footage and see if the person is. As with any technology, there are limits. The software assumes people are looking right into the camera or facing no more than 30 degrees off center. And they’d better be close, too — if the face takes up anything smaller than a 40 x 40-pixel square, there’s just not enough face there to go on.

Facebook Buys 750 Patents From IBM

Facebook has acquired hundreds of patents from International Business Machines Corp as the social networking company attempts to bolster its intellectual property portfolio in the wake of a lawsuit filed by Yahoo. The 750 patents from IBM cover a broad range of technology, ranging from search to semiconductors, according to a person familiar with the matter. A Facebook spokeswoman said the company had no comment, and an IBM representative could not immediately be reached.

Yahoo sued Facebook earlier this month, claiming that Facebook infringed 10 patents, including several that cover online advertising technology. A classic defense for companies targeted with patent claims is to threaten a countersuit using its own patents. But Yahoo possesses far more patents than Facebook. Before the IBM transaction, Yahoo had over 3,300 patents and published patent applications, according to a U.S. government database.

Facebook had 56 issued patents and 503 applications as of December 31, the company said in a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Facebook, the world's largest Internet social networking service, is preparing for an initial public offering that could value the company at up to $100 billion.  It is unclear how much Facebook paid for the IBM patents, but tech companies seeking to build their portfolios have pushed intellectual property prices higher. Google agreed to buy Motorola Mobility last summer for $12.5 billion, and said Motorola's patents were a prime attraction.

Facebook Photos Now High Resolution, 4 Times Larger

Facebook has frequently changed the way it displays photos. Now Facebook is rolling out its greatest photo update yet.

The social network last updated its photo viewer in February. That photo interface appears in a pop-out box with the caption information and ads displayed in the right sidebar. Facebook Timeline was illuminated in the backdrop. Facebook will display photos in high-resolution and allow full-screen viewing of images. The pictures will be crisper, higher quality and can be up to four times larger than before, Facebook announced Thursday.  Chrome users, as well as those on the latest version of Firefox, can view full screen photos by clicking the arrow in the top right corner.

Facebook knew the photos on its site weren’t the best quality, however. Facebook engineer, said in a blog post he started working on the photo updates after he noticed the coloring was off in his photos.

Internet photos display in sRBG, but Mack explains that turning RGB display on can slow the site down. Standard definition photos can slow load time on Facebook by 30%. To make sure high definition photos won’t slow down the site, image scientist Apostolos “Toli” Lerios found and removed the parts of the color profile that aren’t needed to display an image.

Hackers Released Norton Source Code says Symantec

Hackers have published the blueprints to a 2006 version of Symantec Corp's widely used Norton Antivirus software on the Internet, according to the software maker. Symantec spokesman Cris Paden said on Friday that the release of the source code, during the last 24 hours, posed no risk to millions of Norton customers around the world whose PCs are protected by its security software.

"The code that has been exposed is so old that current out-of-the-box security settings will suffice against any possible threats that might materialize as a result of this incident," he said.

Symantec has previously disclosed that a group called Lords of Dharmaraja that is affiliated with the hacker group Anonymous was in possession of source code for several of its products. It said the code was obtained in a 2006 breach of the company's networks. The hackers have previously released the source code for two other Symantec products: Norton Utilities and pcAnywhere.

The company initially urged customers to disable pcAnywhere in the wake of release of that product's source code, then it issued an upgrade to the software and said told customers it was safe to use again.

Firefox’s Plans 2012: Silent Updates, Social Sharing & Many More

After releasing a new version of its browser, Firefox 11, the Mozilla foundation has laid out its plans for 2012, and there are definitely some interesting things in the works for one of the most popular web browsers out there. Part of the plans Mozilla mentions have already been achieved in Firefox 10 and 11.

To resolve problems with old add-ons not working in (now very frequently released) new versions of the browser, they were made compatible by default. Also, from Firefox 11 you can now also sync add-ons across several computers.

However, the full Firefox roadmap reveals several other important updates planned for later in 2012.
One that caught our attention is silent updates, which will be downloaded and installed silently in the background, without the need for user intervention. This feature is planned for Firefox 13.

Another interesting feature coming later in 2012 is the ability to share links and updates to a variety of social networks directly from the browser. We’ve seen products such as (now discontinued) Flock try to integrate social networking directly into the browser, but none have been able to catch a significant market share.

Encyclopedia : Britannica vs. Wikipedia

The Encyclopedia Britannica officially announced it would scrap its print edition on Tuesday in the face of plummeting sales. For many, this was a foregone conclusion. In a world of infinite and instant knowledge, the idea of owning a $1,395 32-volume hardcover library that’s outdated the moment you crease the spine is laughable.

Wikipedia certainly had a hand in Britannica’s print death knell. The crowd-powered reference site is arguably the greatest knowledge experiment civilization has ever seen. And while its critics are the first to point out its unreliability, advocates would counter that a self-correcting collective is more reliable and scalable than a room full of scholars.

Our friends at Statista have taken a look at the economics of Wikipedia and Britannica. The timeline and stats below give a good overview of how these two sources diverge, and the inevitable dominance of the web.

Create A New YouTube Channel With Your Google+ Profile

YouTube is getting better integrated with Google+.

Starting today, Google+ users can create a new YouTube channel with their existing Google+ profile name and photo. This will create a seamless identity across the two platforms.

Users can already share videos they watch on YouTube with their Google+ friends and within Google+ Hangouts. Users can also see which video their Google+ friends are viewing directly from YouTube.

The new Google+-linked YouTube channel feature is only available to users who do not already have a YouTube channel. If, like most long-time YouTube users, you already have your own channel, YouTube says to “stay tuned.” We hope that means that you’ll eventually be able to link or associate your existing channel and Google+ account.

"PayPal Here" Accepts Payments From iPhones

PayPal unveiled its new PayPal Here, a small business mobile payment system. First shown on Thursday, it’s a combination of a free mobile app and thumb-sized card reader, putting a PayPal cash register in the pocket of anybody who wants one.

PayPal’s triangular dongle for accepting swiped credit card transactions fits in the headphone jack of any iPhone or Android handset. Its front slides down slightly to “lock” the reader in place — a characteristic PayPal feels is an advantage over Square, its cube-shaped counterpart.

While the ability to swipe cards is certainly a standout feature, the PayPal Here app is also capable of accepting check and credit card purchases by capturing photos of the check or card in question, and the app can also be used to keep track of cash transactions. If your business is one that bills customers, then the app also has a sleek interface for creating invoices that can be sent to customers via email and paid using a PayPal account or any credit card. In addition to offering merchants a new option for accepting payments, PayPal also announced an updated version of its consumer mobile app Thursday. The updated app allows you to find local businesses that accept PayPal payments, check-in at a business.

Integrated with PayPal Here, merchants will be able to see a photo of you and your name in the PayPal Here app, and can charge your purchases by tapping your picture. The entire process is simple and straightforward, with the best part being that merchants are using the same app to take PayPal payments as they are cash, check, and credit card transactions — it all works together.

Google Grabs Digg Founder Kevin Rose

Kevin Rose is officially a Googler. In an announcement made on his Google+ page, Rose said Friday morning he is Google-bound and is bringing the staff of his startup Milk along with him.

“I’m beyond excited to announce that the Milk crew (Kevin Rose, Daniel Burka, Chris Hutchins and Joshua Lane) is joining Google!”. “It’s been a privilege to use Google products over the years (I still remember begging for a Gmail invite) and I can’t wait to be a part of the amazing team that is shaping the future of the web.”

Milk was formed in April 2011, just a few weeks after Rose quit Digg, which he also founded. Milk, meant to be a development lab for mobile web ideas, was housed in San Francisco’s Mission District.

News that the Digg founder and his team were headed to Google originally broke Thursday. It comes just a few days after Milk pulled the plug on its very first app, Oink, which allowed users to rate the insides of places. At the time, Rose said “Oink was our first test and, in preparing to move onto the next project, we’ve decided to shut it down to help focus our efforts” — efforts that will now take place at Google.

FBI Asks Google to Unlock Android Phone

A security and privacy researcher at Indian University, Christopher Soghoian, found an affidavit filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) requesting to unlock an Android phone.

The FBI wanted access to the phone of Dante Dears, the reported leader of “Pimpin’ Hoes Daily” street gang. The FBI’s Regional Computer Forensics Lab couldn’t get past the “pattern lock.” If you try too many false patterns, you lock the phone’s memory, which can then only be unlocked with a user’s Google account password and username.

Google replied, “Like all law abiding companies, we comply with valid legal process. Whenever we receive a request we make sure it meets both the letter and the spirit of the law before complying. If we believe a request is overly broad, we will seek to narrow it.”

Apple’s new tablet sports an improved “retina” display, a 5-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, LTE support, 1 GB of RAM and an improved A5X CPU with quad-core graphics.

Although it hasn’t even hit the stores yet, there are indicators that the device is already selling very well in pre-orders. Apple has pushed the delivery date for new pre-ordered iPads back several times, which points to a very high demand.

The prices for the new iPad range from $499 for the 16 GB Wi-Fi version to $829 for the 64 GB 3G model.
