Dropbox Adds AirDrop Support and an iOS 7-inspired Look
Popular cloud storage company Dropbox
has rolled out the latest version of its iOS app, and offers an improved
user interface for the iPad, with a complete new design for iOS 7 and
hints at new features coming soon. The new version of the app is
available in the Apple App Store.
The iOS app now has a redesigned icon
and supports Apple’s AirDrop feature, it allows links and files to be
shared over the air with nearby devices. The new interface includes iOS
7-style icons, and has white space and colors for a cleaner look. The
usual bug fixes were noted in the release. In addition to the revamp and
added AirDrop functionality, Dropbox adds that the new app offers
improved speed while loading photos or videos for on-device viewing.
The new iPad app lets users toggle
between full screen and a split screen setup. Apart from these new
features Dropbox has made an interesting comment that states that the
new app “a bit like a new beginning for Dropbox on iOS” and it ”sets the
stage for some exciting things to come.”
Dropbox Now Automatically Saves Screenshots From Your PC
Popular cloud storage service Dropbox has added a new feature to its desktop client, that allows screenshots to be automatically saved and synced to the cloud. This feature is automatically enabled if you have the latest version (2.4.0.) of the Dropbox client installed on your PC (or Mac) and the first time you take a screenshot, you will get a pop up asking if you’d like to save all of your screenshots in the future to Dropbox.
We noticed that our Dropbox client wouldn’t automatically update to the latest version, so if you’re facing the same issue, you can download and install version 2.4.0. from the Dropbox website itself. If you want to create a link to the saved screenshot to share with others, you can use the CTRL+Print Screen command to do so, and the link will be saved to your clipboard.
As an added bonus for all you Mac users, today’s update also includes a nice little importer that copies your photos from iPhoto directly to your Dropbox.
Yahoo Mail Adds Dropbox Attachment Support
Yahoo just announced a new partnership with Dropbox that lets you attach files stored with the popular cloud service to outbound emails. The company is touting the integration as yet another way it's making the email experience simpler for customers.
"The way we see it, you should be able to go into your inbox, do what you need to do and move on with your day," writes David McDowell. Dropbox support brings some nice benefits to users of both services: since files are located in the cloud, Yahoo's traditional 25MB attachment limit no longer applies.
Additionally, Dropbox users can choose to save email attachments directly to the cloud — no local storage necessary. Dropbox support is available now for the web version of Yahoo Mail in English, French, Spanish, German and Italian. For larger attachments, you can simply drag and drop the attachments into your e-mail but can send it via Dropbox.
Dropbox Acquires Mailbox, a Startup Gmail Management App For the iPhone
According to a Wall Street Journal report, the Mailbox service offering will be broadened, with new features, including support for more devices and email providers well as new features.
The app was a hit from launch, and has since received
rave reviews. Mailbox is a Gmail management tool that revamps the inbox
to make it “light, fast, and mobile-friendly.” Users can use the
interface to swipe messages, scan conversations, snooze emails, an even
get push notifications.
Dropbox co-founders, Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, explained their reasoning behind the purchase, in a blog post: The Mailbox app team is currently
14-strong, and will be integrated into the Dropbox team. Talking about
the future of the app, the Mailbox team said they’ve decided to “join
forces with Dropbox and build it together."
We all quickly realized that together we could save millions of people a
lot of pain… Dropbox doesn’t replace your folders or your hard drive:
it makes them better. The same is true with Mailbox. It doesn’t replace
your email: it makes it better… We’re all looking forward to making
Mailbox even better and getting it into as many people’s hands as

Dropbox Desktop Clients for Mac and Windows Updated
Dropbox, the popular cloud storage and
sharing service, has updated the desktop clients for its desktop
application. The new version will be available for both Mac OS X and
Windows. The updated version, named version 2.0, gets a new user
interface and the addition of instant notifications for any new shares
and the recent changes made to your files.
“We’ve made it easier than ever to
accept invitations to shared folders, see links or albums that people
have shared with you, and keep tabs on what’s changed in your Dropbox.
If someone shares a link with you, you can now get to it immediately —
directly from the Dropbox menu! You’ll get notifications in real time as
people share with you, and can see them later just by clicking the
Dropbox icon. You can also accept or decline invitations to shared
folders directly from your desktop.”, says Dropbox, in the blog post.
The mobile versions have not been forgotten, and the developers have
added the notification feature to the Android and iOS versions as well.
The desktop versions are no available for Mac OS X 10.6 and above, and
for Windows XP and above. There is no update for the Linux version yet.
Dropbox For Android Updated, Simplifies Photo Sharing Ability
Dropbox has updated its Android app to
make the process of photo sharing a lot easier. Users can choose their
favourite photos and videos from their library and share it with a few
simple taps. To view the shared photos, the viewers don’t need a Dropbox
account. Dropbox has made it easier to switch between their personal and Dropbox
for Teams accounts on the Dropbox website. The switch is as simple as
clicking your name in the top right corner, selecting ‘Switch Accounts.’
Sharing the photos is really simple.
From the Photos tab, users can tap the button on the top right, and
select the pictures they want to share. Users can add them to a named
album to save for later, or just grab the link to share via email, Facebook, or Twitter.
The feature is currently available only
for Android and there is no word on when the feature will reach iOS. We
hope it will happen soon. Android users need to be running Android 2.3
or higher to be able to avail this new feature. The cloud storage service has crossed 100 million users, according to
the company’s founder, Drew Houston. Users can update the app
on their Android device or download Dropbox from the Google Play store here.
Dropbox Crosses 100 Million Users, Announces 100GB Free Contest
Dropbox, the cloud storage service, has crossed 100 million users, according to the company’s founder, Drew Houston. This is quite an achievement for the five-year old company,
especially now when tech titans such as Google, Apple, Amazon and
Microsoft are investing aggressively in the cloud storage space with
their own offerings. Apple had recently announced that its iCloud
service had 190 million users. Google has also started its Google Drive
service which offers 5 GB of free space to Gmail users.
Dropbox was under a spam attack earlier
this year, which caused users to get spammed via email accounts.
Speaking to New York Times, Houston assured
users that his company had added additional features to prevent future
discrepancies. According to Houston, users store more than 1 billion
files in Dropbox every day and the number of users has quadrupled in the
last year itself.

Dropbox is inviting users to share their ‘Dropbox story’ and the top 10

Dropbox has rolled out an update to its native app for Android with more focus on the media-related features. The update v2.2 brings a new Photos Tab features inside the app. The tab allows users to check out the thumbnail of uploaded images, and videos.
The update comes shortly after Dropbox rolled out an update for its mobile site, adding new image galleries. The company has of late given more emphasis on media content, especially the photos.Dropbox's last round of updates for its Android app brought in automatic image upload capability, direct to the user’s Dropbox account. The update enabled users to choose if they’d prefer automatically uploading via mobile data or Wi-Fi, or, just Wi-Fi.
Facebook Adds Dropbox Integration to Groups
Facebook has announced an integration with cloud storage company, Dropbox. The integration will help users of the social networking website to share files, pictures and folders to their friends and contacts in Facebook Groups using Dropbox's cloud-based storage system. After linking your Facebook and Dropbox accounts, you will be able to browse and choose files from your Dropbox, as you do while selecting from own PC and then share to the group on the network. Once shared, they will immediately appear on your group's wall. The content shared from Dropbox will also appear on smartphone or tablet. Any update or change you make will also be shared to the group.
Dropbox makes it clear that the integration will not allow Facebook to have access of your Dropbox account, if your share documents. "Dropbox and Facebook exchange only the information that's needed for you to add a file to your group. Facebook does not have access to the contents of your Dropbox. When you add a file to a group, Facebook receives only the link to the file, some basic info about the file (such as name and size), and the ability to display a small preview.
The integration, like any other Facebook posts, allows users to comment and like shared via Dropbox files. These shared docs, if allowed, can be downloaded as well.
Dropbox Enables Two-Step Verification
Dropbox has begun to add a two-step verification for all its accounts, the file-hosting service announced on its forums. The process, which is optional but recommended by Dropbox, “adds an extra layer of protection” to accounts by requiring users to submit a six-digit security code in addition to their passwords whenever they sign in, or link a new computer, phone or tablet, the company says. The security code is sent to users’ phones via text message, or generated using a mobile authenticator app.
Dropbox first unveiled the new feature to its forum users, asking them to report their experiences.
The announcement comes just after Dropbox found that usernames and passwords stolen from other websites were used to sign in to a number of Dropbox accounts. In a blog entry posted late July, the cloud-based service said it would take steps to improve users’ security by unrolling “two-factor authentication,” which requires two proofs of identity when signing in.
