Samsung Introduces Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Edge, Gear VR
It’s a big day for Samsung. The Korean manufacturer launched its much-hyped Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, along with plenty of other gadgets, on Wednesday at the IFA 2014 tech conference in Berlin. The Mashable team was there, and also on hand for Samsung's simultaneous event in New York City.
Samsung was clearly busy getting a bunch of gadgets ready for primetime at this year's IFA expo. The UNPACKED event delivered the long-rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 4, but the the cameo appearances were equally compelling. The Koreans managed to surprise everyone with a brand new Galaxy Edge, the Gear VR goggles were unveiled as well, and we saw the Gear S in action. Quite an eventful press conference indeed.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 boasts a 5.7" QHD Super AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 805 chipset, a 16MP OIS rear camera, metal framing, leather-like rear finish, new S-Pen features, among others. Sounds like an impressive upgrade but Samsung didn't stop there.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will be available, starting from October and there is no official word on the pricing just yet. The phablet will up for grabs in frosted white, charcoal black, bronze gold and blossom pink color options.
Samsung has finally utilized the arched display we'd been catching rumors of for months. This is the highlight of the brand new Galaxy Note Edge. It has the same specs as the Note 4, but its display continues bending on the right side of the phone with additional 160px. This should make the Note Edge the smartphone with the highest resolution screen to date.

Samsung Hints of Retina Scanner for Galaxy Note 4
Samsung's impending Galaxy Note 4 is one of the most awaited smartphones of 2014 and now the buzz word is that the device is set to pack in a retina scanner! Possibly the current blue-eyed boy of rumors, details of the Galaxy Note 4 have leaked online plenty of times and now Samsung's chip division - Samsung Exynos - has revealed an unexpected tit-bit via Twitter.
"Security can be improved using features unique to us. That's what we envision. What would you use?" wrote Samsung Exynos on its Twitter account on Saturday, July 12. The cryptic Twitter post seems to hint that Samsung intends on introducing retina scanning for its upcoming mobile devices. The tweet is accompanied by an image which shows off a smartphone screen analyzing an eye and says "unlock the future."
The image seems to suggest that the device is likely the stylus-equipped Galaxy Note 4, the successor to the Galaxy Note 3. The image hints that the smartphone will come equipped with a retina scanner, which can possibly be used to unlock the handset - just like the fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S5 or the iPhone 5s.
Considering the retina scanning feature did not make it to the Galaxy S5, a possibility exists that Samsung was saving it for the Galaxy Note 4, which will likely launch at the IFA 2014. Traditionally, Samsung's Galaxy Note phones and iDevices launch weeks apart from each other and it could be that the Korean company is looking to throw the gauntlet to the iPhone 6 with the retina scanner on board the Galaxy Note 4.
The Galaxy Note 4 is expected to sport a 5.7-inch QHD screen and could come in two variants (one with an Exynos 5433 octa-core processor and the other with Snapdragon 805). The device is also expected to tout 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board memory, as well as a 16-megapixel primary camera. Noted leakster @evleaks has hinted that the Galaxy Note 4 will come in more vibrant hues to lure buyers. Rumors hint at the new hues being Copper Gold, Shimmery White, Charcoal Black and Electric Blue. Whether the Galaxy Note 4 will be a game changer and deploy a retina scanner, however, remains to be seen.
Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to Launch on September 25: Reports
Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will apparently be launched on September 25, according to a report from a South Korean website. The much hyped Galaxy S5 frizzled out miserably, which puts all eyes on the Note series. As per the report, mass production of the phablet would start in June-July. The South Korean smartphone maker could release the phone at IFA, which will be start in the first week of September.
The release could be done similarly to Galaxy Note 3, which was also announced at IFA first and was available for order on September 25th. Many shareholders have reaffirmed that the upcoming Note flagship will be available on September 25th.
Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected to have 5.7 inch Super AMOLED display with a QHD resolution. The RAM on both devices is expected to be 3 GB. The smartphone is likely to have a 15 megapixel rear camera along with a 3.68 megapixel front camera. Galaxy Note 4 is also expected to come with software tweaks like Swipe to Launch Motion Launcher and Smart Fingerprint.
Galaxy Note 4 could be available in two versions, a Snapdragon 805 toting version and a version powered by the Exynos 5433.Recently, AnTuTu Benchmark database gave details about the two variants in detail. As with other devices spotted on the database, products that show up eventually find their way into the market.
On the website of AnTuTu, the one dubbed as SM-N910S refers to quad-version of the Galaxy Note 4 running on a Snapdragon 805 CPU, an Adreno 420 GPU with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory. The SM-N910C indicates octa-core Exynos processor, ARM Mali-T760 GPU with 3GB RAM version. Exynos version will be powered by 1.3GHz eight-core and will be released in India. Samsung will release the 4G LTE version in the region where the service is available.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Unveiled
Samsung sought Monday to frame its new Galaxy S5 smartphone as a lifestyle product, as it emphasized a built-in heart-rate sensor and improved camera features over its slightly larger size.
One of the main appeals of Samsung phones has been their size. The screen has steadily increased since the 4 inches (10.2 centimetres) on the original S from 2010, while the iPhone made that jump to 4 inches only in 2012 and has stayed that way since.
But the S5 pushes the screen to only 5.1 inches (13 cms), measured diagonally, from 5 inches (12.7 cms) in last year's model. Instead of size, Samsung touted the new phone's ability to adapt its screen to changing external conditions and to dim it to avoid disturbing others nearby. The Galaxy S5 offers the world’s fastest autofocus speed up to 0.3 seconds and the advanced High Dynamic Range (HDR), reproduce natural light and color with striking intensity at any circumstances. Also new Selective Focus feature allows users to focus on a specific area of an object while simultaneously blurring out the background. With this capability, consumers no longer need a special lens kit to create a shallow depth of field (DOF) effect.
Here are the specs of Samsung’s new flagship handset:
- Size: 142 x 72.5 x 8.1
- Weight: 145g
- 5.1-inch FHD Super AMOLED display (1920 x 1080 resolution)
- 2.5GHz quad-core processor
- 2GB of RAM
- 16/32GB of memory
- microSD support up to 64GB
- 16-megapixel camera with UHD 4K video recording at 30fps and various software features
- 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera
- LTE Cat 4 (150/50Mbps) support
- 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac HT80 MIMO (2×2) Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth 4.0 BLE/ANT_
- USB 3.0
- NFC
- IR Remote
- 2800mAh battery
- IP67 Dust and Water Resistant
- Fingerprint scanner
- Heart rate sensor
- Android 4.4.2 KitKat with various software features on top including Ultra Power Saving Mode, Download Booster, S Health 3.0, Quick Connect, Private Mode, Kids Mode
As for our friends across the Atlantic, UK providers EE, Three and Vodafone UK have jumped aboard the GS5 bandwagon, as have retailers Phones4u and Carphone Warehouse. Though it hasn't been announced, we expect other carriers such as O2 will support the phone too. No word on pricing just yet, but we expect we'll find that out closer to the phone's April launch date.
