LinkedIn Reaches 50 million Users Milestone in Asia

Accenture, Wipro and Infosys Among Most Sought After Employers in India: LinkedIn


Accenture has retained the top spot on the list of 20 most sought after employers in India for the second time, according to the 'most InDemand employer brand' list compiled by professional networking site LinkedIn.

This is the second year in a row Accenture has retained its number one spot, the professional networking site said. IT majors, Wipro and Infosys are ranked second and third according to the list. The top 10 companies in the list are IBM (4th), Hewlett Packard (5th), Oracle (6th), Tata Consultancy Services (7th), Amazon (8th), Microsoft (9th) and Airtel (10th).

Other firms in the list included are Larsen & Toubro (11), Dell (12), HCL Technologies (14), Cognizant Technology Solutions (15), Deloitte (16), Cisco (17), Genpact (18), Adobe (19) and GE (20).

The top sectors in India are tech, telecom & media, professional services, and aero/auto/engineering. LinkedIn has determined these rankings by analysing the actions of its members on the platform. The site has more than 238 million members globally with over 21 million in India.
Surprisingly Internet giant Google which is ranked as the top employer globally by LinkedIn, is on the 13th spot on the Indian list. Google is ranked number one, followed by Apple (2) and Unilever (3) on the global list, compiled by LinkedIn.

Facebook Testing LinkedIn-like 'Professional Skills' Section


Facebook has quietly rolled out a discoverable “professional skills” option to its user profiles.

After clicking one of the linked professional skills, users are directed to a new page that features existing friends with similar interests. The page also shows related pages, groups and list of friends they may know with interest in that professional skill. 

Tagging profile with professional skills is likely to make it easier for employers searching for a particular job. Confirming the new feature, a Facebook spokesperson tells The Next Web: “We are currently testing a new option where you can add your professional skills to the work and education section of your timeline.”

LinkedIn Adds Facebook-like Mentions, Aims to Boost Conversations


In a blog post, LinkedIn announced it has started rolling out 'mentions' for English-speaking members. Users can now address each other by simply adding a connection or company name in the status update column or in the comments section. Also, they can select someone from the list of their connections that appear in a drop-down, complete the status or comment and post it.

Unlike Twitter and Facebook, LinkedIn users don't need any symbol to mention. Users, who have been mentioned in a post, will get a notification about the update.

Twitter and LinkedIn For BlackBerry 10 Updated


Twitter recently rolled out significant updates to its iOS and Android apps, adding improved search and features such as autocomplete. And now its turn for the BlackBerry 10 version of the app to receive an update. BlackBerry has also rolled out an update to LinkedIn app, adding a few business tools.

Twitter v10.0.1 brings an improved Compose Tweet Screen, which now allows users take a new photo or add an existing one, add location, and offers a shortcut for “@”. Users can compose a Direct Message right from the “Me” tab within the app, also now users can view Direct Messages from contacts in the BlackBerry Hub. Twitter for BlackBerry 10 update also includes improved editing, full conversation view, better image viewing, easy to delete tweets, enhanced menu and ability to block or report as spam.

LinkedIn currently has more than 175 million members, with 50 million of those members joining the service in just the past year alone. To put that growth in perspective, in 2009, LinkedIn had just 32 million people. The top of your LinkedIn profile is updated with a larger photo and a more Spartan look for your expertise and background. The profile editing process has been streamlined, making the page editing experience both easier and more intuitive.

When visiting a connection’s page you can see at a glance what you might have in common with that person, and what LinkedIn members are similar to that person. You can like and comment on posts and status updates your connections have made, as well as share out those posts to your connections. LinkedIn has also updated its service on the app front. You can also see what your connections are commenting and liking on the service, and get access to news and information about what’s happening on LinkedIn.

Your own page now displays a chart visually breaking down your network by location, industry, school, or company as well as a graph showing your own profile strength. Photos of the people who have recently viewed your profile also appear on the right side of the screen.

LinkedIn has launched a new tool, Board Connect, to connect non-profits with potential board members. The professional social network considers the new function to be a valuable utility for its community, connecting opportunity seekers and open positions. LinkedIn Board Connect includes free access to Talent Finder (a premium feature), an educational webcast and an invitation to join the Board Connect group.

LinkedIn Revamps Brand Pages



LinkedIn is rolling out new brand pages to boost engagement between job hunters and companies on the social network, according to an announcement Thursday on LinkedIn’s website. The revamped company pages are more visual and less flooded with widgets. There is a large cover photo at the top of the page, similar to Facebook, and company updates about product announcements and job opportunities are displayed more prominently.

Behind the scenes, LinkedIn has come up with an algorithm to make sure that each company’s update stream is customized for the person checking the page. LinkedIn has introduced several new features in recent months to get users more engaged on the social network.

Earlier this year, LinkedIn released a Follow Company button to make it easier for users to keep up with news from their favorite businesses and just this week, LinkedIn announced a new Facebook-style notification system to track updates on the social network better. The revamped brand pages are just the latest effort for LinkedIn to assert itself as a viable marketing platform for brands.

LinkedIn Now Has 175 Million Members


LinkedIn now has 175 million members, the company announced on Thursday. In May, the professional social networking service had claimed 161 million members, up from 150 million in February.

The company announced the figure in its second-quarter earnings release on Thursday, in which it also reported earnings of $.03 per share on revenues of $228 million. Analysts were expecting earnings of $.01 per share and revenues of $216 million. The company’s stock price was up more than 4% in after-hours trading. LinkedIn’s stock price has jumped 48.5% since the beginning of the year.

LinkedIn Hacker Steals 1.5 Million Passwords


It’s been quite the day for the Russian hacker who has reportedly stolen nearly 6.5 million LinkedIn passwords. Now, it looks like the same hacker has also compromised 1.5 million passwords from popular dating site eHarmony.


“After investigating reports of compromised passwords, we have found that a small fraction of our user base has been affected,” eHarmony wrote on its blog. “We are continuing to investigate… as a precaution, we have reset affected members passwords.”

Affected members will receive an email with details about how to reset passwords. The company also included a list of password security tips, such as changing passwords every few months and using different passwords for each Internet site.

Pinterest Now On No. 3 In Social Network in the U.S


Pinterest is now the number three most-popular social network in the U.S., behind Facebook and Twitter, according to Experian Hitwise. A new report from the researcher shows Pinterest got 21.5 million visits during the week ending Jan. 28, a nearly 30-fold increase over a comparable week in July. Not surprisingly, the site skews female with a 60/40 ration of women to men visitors.


Experian rep Matt Tatham says Pinterest beat its next-closest competitor, LinkedIn, in total visits in February. Tatham says the rankings by total visits for March is as follows:
  • 1. Facebook >> 7 billion
  • 2. Twitter >> 182 million
  • 3. Pinterest >> 104 million
  • 4. LinkedIn >> 86 million
  • 5. Tagged >> 72 million
  • 6. Google+ >> 61 million
 The report, which tracks visits rather than unique visitors, is based on web traffic and doesn’t factor in visits from mobile sites. According to Experian’s reckoning, Foursquare only got 2.9 million visits in March and Instagram got 10.2 million
