Vodafone India chief commercial officer Vivek Mathur said that they
launched Vodafone 3G Mobile Wi-Fi to meet the demand for high speed
mobile data services and would further enhance their 3G offerings in the
market.
The new Vodafone 3G mobile Wi-Fi device is available in
four metros — Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai - and will be launched
in other parts of the country in a phased manner. This compact mobile Wi-Fi device allows sharing of a mobile broadband connection with up to 10 users and up to 3.75 hours of usage in one charge.
The WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Set-up) functionality enables WPS
authentication in addition to regular Wi-Fi based authentication for a
secure browsing experience, the company said.

Users Migrating From Basic to Android Phones: Opera Report
India is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world. The country has seen a rise in migration to smartphones from basic feature phones, according to the State of the Android Mobile Web report for India by Opera Software. Opera report further states that 77% of its users in India have a smartphone priced below Rs 10,000. Micromax is the leading smartphone maker with 30% of users followed by Samsung at 25%. However, Samsung takes the number one spot in terms of the top 10 positions in Android handsets used by Opera Mini users and also consume 56% of data on the top 100 Android devices. In comparison, Micromax users consume 21% data. Moving on, 47% of users are accessing Opera Mini on their smartphones and not the basic Java phones.
Giving insights about user activities on the Opera browser, the report reveals that video consumption is on a rise. Unique user visits to video sites increased by 205% since last year with YouTube leading this category, followed by Dailymotion and Metacafe. The number of Opera Mini users visiting these sites grew by 175%, 450% and 205% respectively in that timeframe.
74% of Indian mobile users on the web are accessing Facebook as seven out of ten pages are of the social network on the Opera Mini browser. Besides social network e-commerce portal have also witnessed a growth of over 240% in Opera Mini users over the last year. Within this category, shopping portals experienced a massive 356% growth in user visits. The most accessed site is Flipkart, followed by Amazon and Snapdeal. Online classifieds websites are also becoming more popular among users. The category jumped 150%, with Quikr in the lead, followed by OLX and Sulekha.
India Embellish the 2nd Largest Smartphone Market by 2019
India is poised to surpass the United States to become the second largest smartphone market by 2019, according to a latest report by Boston-based global market research firm Strategy Analytics.
Beating the slowdown trends, global smartphone sales will grow 13 percent in 2015, it added. ”China and the US will remain the largest smartphone sales countries by 2014, making up 43 percent of global volumes,” the report said. The world’s top 20 countries will account for 80 percent of the global smartphone volumes in 2015, up from 75 percent in 2007.
Asia Pacific will continue to drive growth, accounting for 54 percent of the global volumes in 2015. Central Latin America and Africa Middle East will see strong smartphone growth by 2020 and will play the role of a new growth engine for global market, it said.

Google Android One Smartphones Launched in India, Start at Rs 6399
Google Inc launched in India the first smartphones under its Android One project, pricing them at Rs 6,399 ($105) to capture the low-cost segment of the world's fastest growing smartphone market.
The Mountain View-Based company tied up with Indian mobile players Micromax, Karbonn and Spice Mobiles to launch the affordable phones, which are powered by its operating system and aimed at emerging markets.
After launching in India, Google said it plans to expand Android One to Indonesia, Philippines and other South Asian countries by the end of 2014 and in more countries in 2015. Google outlined the pricing and expansion details in a marketing document seen by Reuters. India is seen as a lucrative market for low-cost smartphones because many people are buying the devices for the first time. Just 10 percent of the India's population currently owns a smartphone, brokerage Nomura said in a recent research note, and that figure is likely to double over the next four years.
Google, however, is not the only company jostling for a share of the Indian market. There are at least 80 smartphone brands in India and analysts say the Android One phones must offer customers more than just affordability if it wants to compete with similarly priced devices made by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Motorola and China's Xiaomi.
"The initial pricing never sticks but it'll be tough for them to compete if they don't come down further," said Neil Shah, research director for devices and ecosystems at Hong Kong-based technology research agency Counterpoint Research. In June, Google had announced the launch of the Android One project, which aims to boost demand for low-end Android smartphones by vastly improving their quality. Currently, many cheap emerging market smartphones run different and somewhat customised versions of the Android operating system, which along with the many variations in hardware make apps on those phones prone to glitches.

Google Acquires Polar to Improve Google+ on Mobile
Google is bringing Polar over to Google+ in the hopes that the team behind the popular opinion-tracking service will be able to heat up Google's social network. While it remains to be seen just how Google's latest acquisition might best fit into the Google+ experience, Google's David Besbris, vice president of engineering, told the Wall Street Journal that Polar's team will work to make Google+ more user-friendly on mobile devices.
Polar's current line of business, which it will be shutting down at the end of the year, is just what its name suggests: easy-to-use polls that can be filled out via various Web services and apps. We're not talking about surveys filled with hundreds of options. Rather, Polar's offerings are more of the "Do you like Mario or Luigi?" variety.
"Polar started with the simple idea that everyone has an opinion worth hearing. Since then one in every 449 Internet users told us what their opinion was by voting on a Polar poll. Our deepest thanks go out to each and every one of you," reads Polar's description. Polar was founded approximately two years ago by Luke Wroblewski and Jeff Cole—the former previously the co-founder and chief product officer of Bagcheck, and the latter the co-founder of Patients Like Me.
As part of the company cozying up with Google, Polar is releasing a series of articles Wroblewski wrote about mobile and multi-device design as a free iBook and PDF document. It's also a bit of a tease of Wroblewski's expertise in the area; he previously wrote a book about app design called "Mobile First," which has since become a bit of a Silicon Valley buzzword.
"Each version is filled with nuanced user interface design details and big-picture thinking on mobile and multi-device design for PCs, tablets, TVs, and beyond. It's our hope that some of our experiences, insights, and missteps, will ultimately help you with the product journey you're on now or will be in the future," Wroblewski wrote.

Google Launches Crisis Tools For Jammu & Kashmir Floods, Including Person Finder
Given that the flood has uprooted communication modes in Jammu & Kashmir, making the area almost inaccessible, Google has launched several tools, to help gather and relay information about people affected by the devastation.
Here are some of the tools Google has been working on:
Google Person Finder, a web application that allows individuals to post the details of, and search for the status of, family members or friends affected by the disaster. If you’re worried about someone in the disaster affected area, then click on “I’m Looking for Someone” and type in their name. If you want to let people know you’re safe, or if you have heard from someone in the disaster affected area, then click on “I have information about someone” and put in their names and details.
As the number of names and records increases, the tool will make it easier for those who are safe to pass on their status to people worried about them. It is available in both English and Hindi.

Opera Mini Users Save Rs 2.1 Billion on Mobile Data Bills: Report
Opera Software has released a report stating that Opera Mini mobile browsers used 75% less mobile data in the first half of the year and claims to have saved Rs. 350 million monthly in mobile Internet bills. The report claimed that the Opera Mini users nationwide have saved Rs 2.1 billion in total in the first six months of 2014.
Opera Mini users on Java-based phones saved an average of 81% in mobile data each month, while smartphone users saved about 69%, the report said. Among smartphone users, those on Android phones clocked an average of 68.5% savings per month, while iOS users saved about 62%.
The report is based on aggregated information obtained from the Opera Mini servers.
Opera Mini is compatible with over 3000 mobile devices, ranging from basic Java phones to the latest Android and iOS smartphones.
“These substantial savings were achieved with the help of Opera Mini’s advanced compression technology, which shrinks webpages down to as little as 10% of their original size, reducing data consumption by up to 90%,” the report added.

Vodafone Launches 3G Mobile Wi-Fi For Rs 2,399
India's third-largest telco Vodafone on Wednesday launched Vodafone R206Z, a high speed 3G Mobile Wi-Fi dongle to offer Internet experience to its data customers on the go. Vodafone 3G mobile Wi-Fi provides data transfer speed up to 21.1 Mbps and is available for Rs 2,399, the company said in a statement.

Government to Spend Rs 20,000 Crore For Mobile Connectivity in Rural Areas
The Telecom Secretary, Rakesh Garg, said
that this project will mainly focus on wirelessly connecting those
rural areas which have never seen mobile telephony, within the next 5
years. This news was revealed at the first meeting of States and the
Center at Digital India Program meet.
The Government also plans to roll out mobile connectivity to at least half of these villages within the next 3 years.
This will not only help small businesses, but will also help grow cottage industries. The govt. is also planning to connect all 2,50,000 panchayats via high-speed broadband.

Development Commissioner of Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles and
flipkart.com also made a deal to provide online marketing platform to
weavers. This will take small businesses to new heights by removing the
middlemen, and will also lead to affordable clothes for the buyers along
with higher margins for the manufacturers.
The
Digital India Program will truly help the common and not-so tech-savvy
businessmen in rural areas make huge strides in the fields of online
marketing. If the plan goes well, then it would be possible to have access to high-speed fiber Internet even in the remote areas.

Intex Cloud FX Running Firefox OS Launched For Rs. 1999
Intex has launched Cloud FX, the company’s first smartphone running on Firefox OS, as it promised back in June. Other capabilities included the ability to make phone calls, add contacts, task lists, check “mail” and use third party apps. When it came to installing new apps? You did that using special PCMCIA cards through the bottom of the device.

Samsung is Still the King of Indian Smartphone Market : IDC

Android Kitkat Now On 21% of Android Devices
Released by Google in October 2013, Android KitKat is slowly but surely embracing more and more devices, as manufacturers are striving to provide updates to keep users happy. According to Google data gathered between August 5 and August 12, KitKat now runs on 20.9% of all Android devices. KitKat was at 17.9% in July, and 13.6% in June, so its steady growth is obvious.
While we now have fewer devices running Jelly Bean when compared to last month, this version of Android (including 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3) is still the most widely used, being found on 54.2% of devices. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich currently powers 10.6% of Android devices, while 13.6% are stuck running 2.3 Gingerbread. Last on the list, still giving life to 0.7% of devices, is the very old Android 2.2 Froyo. Other Android versions, like Honeycomb or Éclair, are not listed because they account for less than 0.1%.

It will be interesting to see how things stand after Google launches the brand new Android L (currently available as a Developer preview for select Nexus devices). Let's hope the upgrade process won't be a painfully long one - though we're afraid that this is exactly what will happen in the case of some manufacturers.
This month, we’ve continued the positive
trend in KitKat adoption, but just as was the case last time around,
the rate of adoption is slowing as more and more flagship and former
flagships receive KitKat. This month, Android 4.4.x KitKat saw a
16.8% relative growth, which resulted in a total of 20.9% of active
installs. Surprisingly, Android 2.x is actually up one tenth of one
percent to 14.3%, and this is due to Gingerbread going from 13.5% to
13.6%. We shouldn’t be too concerned with the increase per se, as this
is likely a stats collection artifact, but the lack of a decrease could
signal that the platform’s Gingerbread problem will remain for quite
some time.
Another way of looking at the user
adoption data is that KitKat is on the rise, but the pace of this
formerly meteoric rise has now tempered off for two months, as more and
more devices that will get eventually KitKat have already gotten it. 2.x
is still holding strong, and perhaps that number will stay this way
until those users who are still clinging to their archaic devices are
forced to upgrade due to malfunction or growing minimum app
requirements. While the growth trends in this month’s adoption stats
aren’t quite as rosy as we’ve seen in previous updates, this is still
good news given KitKat’s continual rise.

Microsoft Introduces Nokia 130 Feature Phone For EUR 19
Microsoft just announced the Nokia 130 and 130 Dual SIM, most affordable Nokia phones with built-in video and music player. These have 1.8″ (160 x 128 pixels) TFT displays, run on Series 30+ OS and features FM Radio, similar to the Nokia 108 Dual SIM that was launched back in October in India. These have Bluetooth 3.0 with SLAM that enables multimedia content sharing between phones equipped with Bluetooth, but lacks a rear camera. These are 13.9mm thick and weighs just 68 grams.
The Nokia 130 Dual SIM comes with dual SIM support. Both these have a 2G connectivity, micro SD card support up to 32GB, built-in LED flashlight on the back, 1020 mAh battery that promises up to 13 hours talk time and up to 46 hours of playback time.The Nokia 130 and Nokia 130 Dual SIM comes in Red, White and Black colors and is priced at just 19 Euros (Rs. 1,550 approx / US$ 25) before taxes and subsidies. These phones would be available sometime this quarter. As usual, the dual SIM variant has been listed on official India website, so we can expect the phone here soon.
Wireless Charging, at a Distance, Moves Forward For uBeam
When Meredith Perry,
25, started studying astrobiology at the University of Pennsylvania, her
career goal was to eventually find life on other planets. Instead, Ms.
Perry accidentally stumbled upon something even more exciting: the
ability to charge portable electronics, like cellphones and laptops,
wirelessly using ultrasound. To do this, Ms.
Perry created a technology that can take electricity, convert it into
sound and send that audio through the air over ultrasound. Then a
receiver attached to a portable electronic device catches the sound and
converts it back into electricity. The technology makes it possible for a device to move freely around a room, in a pocket or purse, while constantly charging.
Ms. Perry’s company, uBeam,
announced on Wednesday that it took an early prototype concept of this
technology, first developed for Ms. Perry’s college innovation
competition, and turned it into a fully functional prototype that the
company now plans to build for consumers.
“This is the only
wireless power system that allows you to be on your phone and moving
around a room freely while you’re device is charging,” Ms. Perry said in
an interview. “It allows for a Wi-Fi-like experience of charging; with
everything else you have to be in close range of a transmitter.”
The uBeam charging
stations will be thin, measuring no more than 5 millimeters thick. These
transmitters could be tacked to walls like wallpaper or made into
decorative art to beam electricity to devices. Smartphones and laptops
could then be equipped with thin receivers able to convert audio and
charge the devices. The technology could
also bring significant changes to how devices are designed: Gadgets that
work with uBeam could have thinner batteries and constantly receive
power. Battery technology has barely changed
over the last few decades, with device makers relying on incremental
improvements to battery power, in combination with more energy-efficient
electronics.
The uBeam products will be on store shelves within the next two years,
the company said. Ms. Perry said that the company planned to make two
different charging products at first. One will be built for smaller
rooms, like homes and offices, and the other, for much larger uBeam
chargers, will be industrial-size for stadiums, airports, hotels,
conference halls and music venues.The uBeam charging capabilities do
have some serious limitations, including the power transmitters’
inability to beam through walls. This means that unlike Wi-Fi hotspots,
where a single device can transmit Internet to an entire house or small
office, uBeam users would have to buy transmitters for each room. The company is filing 18 patents related to wireless charging
and ultrasound with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It
is also in the process of closing a Series A round of financing, in
addition to an earlier $1.7 million seed round from Marissa Mayer,
Yahoo’s chief executive; Founders Fund; and Andreessen Horowitz.
“We’re
going to sell directly to consumers, and we’ll sell them to restaurant
chains and hotels — we are going to saturate the market with uBeam
transmitters,” Ms. Perry said. “In addition to your local coffee shop
saying it has free Wi-Fi, it will also say it has free uBeam.”

PowerSquare Launches New Wireless Tech to Charge Qi Device
PowerSquare, Inc., a fast-growing startup in the wireless power industry, today announced the launch of its patent-pending Adaptive Position-Free (APF) system that simultaneously refuels multiple Qi-compatible devices. Developing technology that charges more than one device, on a large surface, in any position, has been a key challenge for the ever-evolving wireless power industry. Technology solutions today, however, often leverage expensive multiple-coil systems. As a result, companies cannot go to market with these products and leave them as proof of concept.
