Opera Software has released a report stating that Opera Mini mobile browsers used 75% less mobile data in the first half of the year and claims to have saved Rs. 350 million monthly in mobile Internet bills. The report claimed that the Opera Mini users nationwide have saved Rs 2.1 billion in total in the first six months of 2014.
Opera Mini users on Java-based phones saved an average of 81% in mobile data each month, while smartphone users saved about 69%, the report said. Among smartphone users, those on Android phones clocked an average of 68.5% savings per month, while iOS users saved about 62%.
The report is based on aggregated information obtained from the Opera Mini servers.
Opera Mini is compatible with over 3000 mobile devices, ranging from basic Java phones to the latest Android and iOS smartphones.
“These substantial savings were achieved with the help of Opera Mini’s advanced compression technology, which shrinks webpages down to as little as 10% of their original size, reducing data consumption by up to 90%,” the report added.

Google has announced the launch of a 64-bit version of Chrome for Windows. It has introduced 64-bit Dev and Canary channels for Windows 7 and Windows 8 platforms.

According to Google, 64-bit helps it “take advantage of the latest processor and compiler optimizations, a more modern instruction set, and a calling convention that allows more function parameters to be passed quickly by registers. As a result, speed is improved, especially in graphics and multimedia content, where we see an average 25% improvement in performance.”

In addition to performance, Google hopes the 64-bit version will help bring security features by taking advantage of the new OS features like High Entropy ASLR on Windows 8. “Those extra bits also help us better defend against exploitation techniques such as JIT spraying, and improve the effectiveness of our existing security defense features like heap partitioning,” adds Google in a blog post. 

Users can expect a significant improvement in stability for 64-bit Chrome over 32-bit Chrome. Google claims crash rates for the renderer process (i.e. web content process) are almost half that of 32-bit Chrome.

Google has rolled out big updates to its Chrome and Google apps on Android. As expected, the updates bring a bevy of new features, bug fixes and performance improvements.

First up is Chrome for Android. The updated Chrome allows you to undo closed Tabs. The app now also supports fullscreen video with subtitles and HTML5 controls. According to the change log, the app has also added support for some multi-window devices (not detailed). The updated Chrome v35.0.1916.122 is available on Google Play store.

Google also released Chrome version 35 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Mainly aimed at developers, the update brings - More developer control over touch input, New JavaScript features, new apps/extension APIs and lots of under the hood changes for stability and performance.
