Former HP Chair Dunn Dies At 58

Patricia Dunn, the former Hewlett-Packard Co. chairwoman who authorized a boardroom surveillance probe that ultimately sullied her remarkable rise from investment bank typist to the corporate upper class, has died after a long bout with cancer. She was 58. Dunn died Sunday morning at her home in Orinda surrounded by her family, according to her sister, Debbie Lammers. She said Dunn's ovarian cancer had returned.
Once one of the most powerful women in corporate America, Dunn saw her career tarnished in 2006 when she was ousted from HP and brought up on criminal charges — which were ultimately dropped — for approving the company's plan to snoop into the private phone records of board members, journalists and HP employees to catch people leaking to the media.

Dunn long maintained that she was a scapegoat. She said she was being unfairly vilified for the tactics of third-party investigators she did not hire or directly control. She emphasized that she didn't know the inner workings of the investigations and that she relied on HP's security and legal teams for assurance that the tactics were legal.

The scandal unfolded as Dunn continued to battle a disease that had haunted her through a sparkling investment banking career and a stormy nine-year stretch on the board of HP, one of the world's largest technology companies. Dunn had spent time on philanthropic matters in the years since the scandal, Lammers said. Dunn and her husband, Bill Jahnke, endowed a faculty position at the University of California, San Francisco's Department of Surgery named in honor of her mother, who also died of cancer.
Lammers said she wanted people to remember her sister's "incredibly influential rise in her professional life and her courage and valiant battles over the course of her treatments."

Dunn joined HP's board in 1998 and was instrumental in the hiring and firing of CEO Carly Fiorina, whose flamboyant personality and ferocity in securing the $19 billion purchase of Compaq Computer Corp. ultimately helped hasten her ouster amid a sagging stock price and disappointing results from the combined company.

Dunn was the one who announced Fiorina's ouster in February 2005 and named her low-key successor, Mark Hurd, previously CEO of NCR Corp. Hurd himself was ousted last year after an investigation into a sexual harassment claim found inconsistencies in expense reports filed. Dunn also assumed Fiorina's role as chairwoman at the time. Dunn was forced out in that role in September 2006 in an embarrassing scandal involving spying on the telephone records of board members and journalists to ferret out the source of leaks to the media.

After working briefly as a part-time reporter for a community newspaper in San Francisco, Dunn began her corporate climb by capitalizing on a temporary typist gig that she landed at an investment firm in the 1970s.
She was able to turn the two-week typing assignment into full-time work and managed to quickly rise through the ranks by earning a reputation as a hard-edged businesswoman. That reputation eventually helped her earn the promotion to CEO of fund management behemoth Barclays Global Investors in 1995.

Dunn's life had been far from charmed. Financial difficulties dogged her family throughout her childhood, and her father, a vaudeville actor, died of a heart attack before she was a teen. After the death, the family moved to Marin County, north of San Francisco, and her mother's emotional health deteriorated.
Dunn's mother later died of breast cancer. It was at the height of Dunn's corporate success when she was diagnosed with cancer herself, forcing her to step down in 2002 from her role as Barclays CEO to fight breast cancer and melanoma.

Two years later, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and in fall 2006, she underwent surgery for a metastasized tumor — three weeks before the public learned of the HP investigation that spawned congressional investigations, criminal probes and forced Dunn's resignation. As Dunn and others involved in the probe grappled with the fallout, the public was given a rare view of the workings of a board consumed with bitter rivalries and dysfunction.

Dunn's family is planning a memorial service in San Francisco. Dunn is survived by her husband, Jahnke; three adult children, Janai Brengman, Michelle Cox and Michael Jahnke; ten grandchildren; a brother, Paul Dunn, and a sister, Lammers.

India Wants Google & Facebook To Censor User Content

India's government wants Internet companies and social networks like Facebook to screen content from users in India before posting it, according to a report from The New York Times. Kapil Sibal, India's telecommunications minister, and executives from the Indian units of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook will meet on Monday to discuss the request. Sibal has made the request at previous meetings with Internet service providers and Facebook.

According to The Times report, which cites "executives of Internet companies," Sibal told the companies at these meetings that he expected humans rather than machines to screen user-generated pages for disparaging, inflammatory or defamatory content and that this content should be deleted before it's posted. The companies plan to tell Sibal that his request is impossible due to both the volume of user content and the vagueness of what is or is not defamatory.
This isn't the first time that India has made what Internet companies consider to be unreasonable requests for regulating content. Last year, the Indian government threatened to shut off BlackBerry services entirely when the device maker refused law enforcement agencies access to encrypted data (ultimately it did not).
And in April, India enacted regulations that required websites to remove all objectionable material, including anything "grossly harmful, harassing, blasphemous," "ethnically objectionable," "disparaging" or that impersonates another person. A memo from Google that outlined its objections to the regulations, including concern about placing limits on free speech, leaked to The Wall Street Journal about a month later.

Under these new rules, websites are required to remove objectionable content identified by authorities within 36 hours. Between January and June of this year, according to Google's Transparency Report, India has made 68 requests to remove content from the search engine -- the fifth highest number of requests from any country. Brazil, Germany, the United States, South Korea and Taiwan made more requests than India.

YouTube Redesign Emphasizes Content Channels

In its ongoing bid to lure TV viewers online, YouTube has redesigned its homepage to emphasize channels.
On the redesigned homepage, unveiled Thursday, channels now occupy the wide, middle column. Recommended videos can be found at the right and one's profile and other popular channels are on the left.
Why channels? Google's streaming site recently announced a series of high-profile content partners in October, from Jay-Z to Amy Poehler to Ashton Kutcher. This new venture involves the creation of about 100 channels of original, professional content.

As channels like "Car and Driver Television" debut and attract a following, this redesign will make it even easier to find them. The channels one subscribes to are in the middle and other popular options are on the left, sorted by category. This is also about keeping viewers for longer. Rather than have users come, click on a video or two and leave -- as the old design encouraged -- users may be more tempted to stick around if they load up on all the content of a few channels.

Channels aren't the only reason for the redesign though. Google has been in an extreme makeover mood, redesigning Gmail, Google Reader and launching Google+ this summer.

Facebook Adds Gowalla Developers To Its Software Team

Facebook has hired the co-founders of Gowalla, one of the pioneering companies that developed the concept of "checking in" at real-world locations with mobile phones. Facebook, which has its own location features built in to its online social network, will not acquire Gowalla's technology. And Gowalla's service will be shut down at the end of January. "In talking with the Gowalla team, we realized that we share many of the same goals: building great products that reach millions of people, making a big impact quickly, and creating new ways for people to connect and share what's going on in their lives," Facebook said in an emailed statement on Monday.

"While Facebook isn't acquiring the Gowalla service or technology, we're sure that the inspiration behind Gowalla will make its way into Facebook over time," the company said. A Facebook spokesman declined to specify what product or service the Gowalla team would work on at Facebook, other than noting that the team would join Facebook's design and engineering teams. Gowalla was released the same week in 2009 as Foursquare, a rival location services startup. Both companies provided a way for people to broadcast their whereabouts to friends and others by using their mobile phones to "check-in" at real-world establishments, such as coffee shops and restaurants.

But Foursquare's service increased its number of users faster than Gowalla, and Gowalla was never able to catch up. Facebook, the world's No. 1 social network with more than 800 million users, introduced its own location feature, dubbed Paces, in August 2010.

In a post on the official Gowalla blog, co-founder Josh Williams said the company would provide an easy way for users to export their data, such as photos posted to the soon-to-be-shut-down service. Facebook is not acquiring Gowalla's user data, Williams said. Williams and Gowalla co-founder Scott Raymond will both join Facebook in January, along with other members of the Gowalla team. Facebook did not respond to an inquiry about the number of Gowalla members joining the company.

Hackers Jailbreak RIM's PlayBook

Three hackers say they have exploited a vulnerability in Research In Motion's PlayBook tablet to gain root access to the device, a claim that could damage the BlackBerry maker's hard-won reputation for security.
Root access means a user has permission to alter any file or program on a device and can control hardware functions. In a response to queries, RIM said it is investigating the claim, and if a "jailbreak" is confirmed will release a patch to plug the hole.

The three hackers - who identify themselves as xpvqs, neuralic and Chris Wade - plan to release their data within a week as a tool called DingleBerry. Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems are frequently attacked by users who want to run programs that have not been authorized by the manufacturers, but breaches of RIM's software are more rare. The PlayBook runs on a different operating system than RIM's current BlackBerry smartphones. However, the QNX system will be incorporated into its smartphones starting next year.

The PlayBook in July became the first tablet device to win a security certification approving it for U.S. government use. In a video posted on YouTube, Wade shows the DingleBerry tool allowing the PlayBook to access the Internet video service Hulu, which is not currently available on RIM's tablet.
Hulu, a service from Comcast's NBC Universal, News Corp's Fox and Walt Disney Co's ABC, blocks all mobile browsers by default and has yet to offer an app for the PlayBook. A second video showed neuralic typing commands into a computer to turn the PlayBook's LED indicators on and off.

A source told Reuters that RIM had previously closed a PlayBook vulnerability that allowed a pre-loaded racing game to force a user to watch an introductory video.

Wal-Mart Launches First Social Networking App

Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, unveiled its first social-networking application late on Wednesday, in a move to latch onto one of the hottest trends in e-commerce. WalMart launched Shopycat, which uses Facebook data to recommend gifts to consumers, on the company's Facebook page.

This is one of the first products to roll out of @Walmartlabs, a unit of the company based just south of San Francisco that is developing social-networking and mobile technologies for the retailer. "Shopycat is the first step in what we think is a very strategic area for the industry as a whole," said Venky Harinarayan, senior vice president of WalMart Global eCommerce and co-founder of @WalmartLabs. The unit focused on gift giving first because it's a tricky process that is inherently social, he added.

Shopycat uses data from Facebook pages to estimate a person's top 10 friends. It then recommends suitable gifts for those friends, based on their interests, again based on information shared via Facebook. Consumers can also search for a topic or theme, and Shopycat will show which Facebook friends are interested in those things, along with related gifts.

Wal-Mart isn't the only retail company to use Facebook to promote gift buying. EBay Inc, operator of the world's largest online marketplace, launched Group Gifts in early November. The service connects eBay shoppers with Facebook friends to collectively purchase presents.

NASA Plans First Space Washing Machine

Have you ever wondered how astronauts in the International Space Station deal with their laundry when they stay there for months at a time? With no easy way to wash clothes or get them delivered, astronauts spend up to a week wearing the same underwear, and even longer than that for other articles of clothing. In order to make their lives a bit more hygienic, NASA has commissioned a washing machine design that can work in zero gravity.

NASA contracted Oregon-based UMPQUA Research Company to create a prototype of a low-power washing machine that uses a very small amount of water. To be more precise, part of the contract reads: "Flight Hardware for long duration human missions beyond low Earth orbit...The system is suitable for use in any long term space mission where resupply logistics preclude routine delivery of fresh crew clothing and removal of disposable clothing articles. While the proposed laundry system is microgravity compatible, the system will be completely functional in reduced gravity environments."

UMPQUA proposed a machine that uses not only jets of air and vapor but also microwave rays to clean clothes. The company claims its system achieves "greatly enhanced softness" compared to other low-water laundry tech. Once the machine is deemed viable for use, astronauts can stop the current practice of sending their laundry on unmanned capsules to burn on the Earth's atmosphere, and using their soiled underwear to grow plants in. The futuristic washing machine may be designed for outer space, but the company believes it could also be used on ships, military outposts, and Earth-bound research stations.

Bitdefender Releases Mobile Security App For Android

After five months of beta testing, Bitdefender’s Mobile Security app for Android devices is officially ready for download. And it couldn’t come at a better time; according to a number of recent reports, malware makers have been flooding the Android Market left and right, making it increasingly dangerous for unsuspecting users.
Originally launched in June, Mobile Security has been receiving tweaks and upgrades almost constantly, but now the company says the app is ready for the big leagues, offering both a free version and a paid version, which costs $9.95, and comes with a number of additional protections for Android users.

With the free version, you’ll get:

• Malware scanner: This feature will automatically scan any new app you download to see if it could ruin your life. You can also initiate an on-demand scan anytime you like. Your device’s SD card will be scanned, as well as the on-board storage.

• Application audit: This feature checks to see what kinds of permissions the apps on your device allow, and tells you if any of them are suspicious. The audit includes checking whether apps require access to the Internet; whether they require access to personal information, like contacts, messages or photo gallery; and whether any apps will cost you money by automatically sending out messages, or initiating phone calls.

• Remote geolocation: Enables users to track the location of their device on Google Maps, in real-time. (Note: GPS must be enabled for this feature to work, of course.)

The paid version includes all the features listed above, and adds the following features:

• Web security: Scans any website requested by the default browser on the device to see if it points to any known phishing or fraudulent URLs, or if the site contains malware or other types of viruses. Those pages are then temporarily blocked, or an alert is shown.

• Remote lock: Lock your device via your online Bitdefender account.

• Remote wipe: Delete all the data from your device from your Bitdefender account. Note: This even deletes the Mobile Security app, so use this one only as a last resort.

• Message/sound alert: Display a message or play a sound on your device via your Bitdefender account.
We must note that, even if you have the Mobile Security app, or a similar app, installed, it’s always important to be discerning when installing any app on your device. Check the permissions an app requires before downloading; if it seems strange that a particular app needs a certain permission, don’t download it.

Bitdefender’s Mobile Security app is available from the Android Market here. Anyone who has already installed Mobile Security can simply update their app to receive the final version.

Data of 13 Million South Korean Online Game Subscribers Hacked

South Korea's communications regulator said on Saturday that personal information of more than 13 million subscribers of a popular online game of Nexon Korea Corp, a leading game developer in the country, had been leaked in a hacking attack. The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said in a statement Nexon reported to the commission late Friday afternoon that the company on Thursday discovered the leakage of personal data of its online game Maple Story's 13.2 million subscribers.

The information was leaked weeks before the unlisted company's planned initial public offering of its Japanese affiliate on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on December 14. Nexon aims to raise more than 95 billion yen ($1.2 billion) through the IPO, which would be the largest on the Tokyo bourse this year.

KCC said it, jointly with police and computer security experts, is investigating the hacking case. The leaked data included user IDs, names, resident registration numbers and passwords, it added. A Nexon official said the leaked data neither covered no information on financial transactions and bank account numbers. And it did not affect overseas subscribers of the online game. The company has asked game subscribers to change passwords to prevent additional damage, although the leaked resident registration numbers and passwords were encrypted. The entire subscription membership of Maple Story is about 18 million, the company official said.

Nexon, which has gained a global reputation through Maple Story and online game Kart Rider, is one of the two leading online game developers in South Korea, along with NCsoft Corp. The incident is the largest such security breach case since late July when information of up to 35 million users of an Internet portal and blogging site operated by SK Comms was attacked by hackers from China, exposing the vulnerabilities of networks in the world's most wired country.

Accusations against China over hacking incidents have mounted this year, with allegations it intruded into the networks of Lockheed Martin and other U.S. military contractors and tried to gain access to the Google email accounts of U.S. officials and Chinese human rights advocates. South Korea has drawn up a cyber security master plan after a wave of hacking attacks against global agencies, companies and its own financial firms.

Spotify Hits 2.5 Million Paying Subscribers

Swedish online music star Spotify said Wednesday ahead of a mystery announcement next week that it has reached 2.5 million paying subscribers. "Fanfare! Drum roll! Yes, we're excited to announce that we've now welcomed 2.5 million paying subscribers to the service," Spotify said in a blog post.

Spotify, which launched in Europe in 2008 and expanded to the United States in July, did not provide a country-by-country breakdown for subscribers to the music streaming service. Spotify had 1.6 million paying subscribers in June and much of its recent growth appears to have come from its availability in the United States and an integration with Facebook in September.

Spotify, which boasts a catalog of more than 15 million songs for listening on computers or mobile phones, has more than 10 million registered users. Spotify has invited reporters to attend a press conference in New York on November 30 with chief executive and co-founder Daniel Ek.

"What's next for Spotify?" the invitation teased without providing further details. Last week, Spotify expanded to Austria, Belgium and Switzerland. Spotify offers three services: a free, ad-supported streaming service, an ad-free $4.99 a month plan for computer listening, and a $9.99 a month plan allowing subscribers to download as many songs as they want to a mobile phone.

Google Music Vs. iTunes

Google on Wednesday began selling digital music in a direct challenge to Apple's iTunes and Amazon's online shop. "Today we are happy to announce you can buy millions of songs right from Android Market," Google product manager Paul Joyce said at a press event in Los Angeles. The Internet search giant also announced that its Google Music service was coming out of test mode and is available free of charge to US residents.

Digital songs were available immediately for purchase online at the Android Market and the service will be rolled out to Android-powered smartphones and tablet computers in coming days, Google said.
"Doing a deal with Google for the sale of our repertoire is groundbreaking on a number of levels," said Robert Wells, president of global digital business at Universal Music.

"We expect this to be a rich new revenue stream for our artists," Wells added while joining music industry peers on-stage at the event. Google signed three of the four major record labels -- Universal, EMI, and Sony Music -- with the holdout being Warner Music, home to Madonna and other artists. Coldplay, Shakira, and the Rolling Stones teamed with Google to celebrate the music store launch by making free or exclusive tracks available. One perk of the new service is the ability to share songs bought at the Android music shop with friends on the Google+ social network for one-time listening.

Google also designed the Music Store to allow independent musicians to be able to sell songs at prices of their choosing. Google in May launched a test version of Google Music, which allows users to store personal collections in the Internet "cloud" for streaming to smartphones, tablet computers or other gadgets.
Google avoided having to cut deals with music labels at the time by letting people store digital versions of songs they already own in online "lockers" which they can access using gadgets linked to the Internet.

As many as 20,000 songs can be stored at Google Music, which was pitched as "a completely legal" service akin to a person storing music collections on home computer hard drives. Google Music takes aim at a similar service launched in March by Internet retail powerhouse Amazon.com and is a long-coming step toward taking on Apple's iTunes digital content shop. With Amazon Cloud Drive and Cloud Player, users can upload digital music, photos, videos and documents to Amazon servers and access the files through Web browsers or phones and tablet computers running Google's Android software.

Hewlett-Packard Unveils Its First Business Laptop "ULTRABOOK"

Hewlett-Packard (HP) on Wednesday unveiled a lightweight laptop computer to take on Apple's MacBook Air in the hot "Ultrabook" arena. The HP Folio will be priced at $900 when it hits the market on December 7, less than two months after the California-based technology titan scuttled plans to abandon making personal computers.

HP tailored the Folio for business, making it thin and light with a battery life of as long as nine hours.
The Folio weighs 3.3 pounds (1.5 kilograms) and features solid state drives along with 13.3-inch (33.8-centimeter) high-definition screens.

"This category of product breaks new ground and will be a likely choice for businesses to offer to employees looking for a more consumer-centric experience," said IDC chief research officer Crawford Del Prete.
"We expect Ultrabooks will re-ignite interest in the small form factor PC category, and by 2015 expect 95 million Ultrabooks will be shipping worldwide annually," the industry analyst said. Folio laptops will be powered by Windows 7 operating systems, which promise to appeal to the broad array of businesses that rely on Microsoft software. A model of Folio will be available with a built-in security chip to encrypt and protect email and stored data, according to HP.

HP's new chief executive Meg Whitman, the former chief executive of online auction giant eBay, said in October that the company will keep its PC division and also resume making tablets.

Whitman's announcements were a dramatic repudiation of strategic decisions which led to the ouster of her predecessor, Leo Apotheker, after less than a year at the helm of the world's biggest computer maker.
Apotheker, who was fired by HP's board in September, had proposed spinning off the PC unit and stopped production of the TouchPad, HP's rival to Apple's iPad, in a shift towards software and services for businesses.
