Raspberry Pi, World's Cheapest Computer

Developers of the Raspberry Pi, also dubbed as the $25 computer, are overwhelmed by the massive popularity and demand of the device across the globe. The Pi, which is a single circuit board with a size of a credit card with no screen and keyboard, has sold almost 1.5 million units in last one and half years.

“We're closing in on 1.5 million [sales] for something that we thought would sell a thousand,'' reveals Eben Upton, executive director of the Raspberry Pi Foundation. ''We've sold many more to children than we expected to sell, but even more to adults. They're using it like Lego to connect things up.''

The Raspberry Pi, launched last year, is considered to be an educational tool for children to learn coding. However, the device is now being used innovatively in various industries. According to reports, the device is now being used to power warehouse doors in Malawi, photographing astral bodies from the US and robots in Japan.

The Raspberry Pi features a Broadcom BCM2835 chipset, ARM11 processor of 700MHz, 256MB RAM, RCA and HDMI output, 3.5 mm audio jack, USB2.0 support, and is powered by 5V over microUSB. It can Linux and the plethora of software available for it, and even play videos in HD.

Mobile internet Industry Shifts Focus to Asia

According to a recent survey by ITU, the sales of high-end devices in mature markets in the last few years has slowed down, and now the focus is on emerging markets where demand of budget devices and services are on the rise. Asia is expected to emerge as the driving force of global growth in the next two decades, according to a statement by Scott Lee, head of Asia at Appsnack. With the growth shifting to mid range and budget mobiles the main challenge will be faced by companies like Samsung and Apple which constitute half of the high end smartphone market. Apple's revenues in China have slumped to 43 per cent in April-June from the last quarter and 14 per cent from 2012. Analysts blame lack of budget and mid-range mobile phones for the slow down. Samsung has also indicated that its quarterly operating profit will also fall short of estimates.

India has become the third largest smartphone market with the emergence of strong domestic manufacturers like Micromax who recently launched the Canvas 4 with similar features to Samsung Galaxy S3 at half the price.

Facebook's Product Manager for Ads Fidji Simo adds the move will help the company easily determine if any content was offensive or uninteresting from the news feed. The new options will be available for all types of feed posts, including ads and sponsored stories.

Separately, Facebook briefly tested a new feature that prompts users to sign up for notifications when they like a Page. Spotted by Inside Facebook, the feature provides users options “get notifications” or “not now”. Notifications can be turned on later by clicking on the Like button.
