BlackBerry Z3 Jakarta Edition Goes Official, Priced Under $200

BlackBerry launched a low-cost touchscreen device in Jakarta, the Z3, as the embattled smartphone maker looks to revive sales in emerging markets like Indonesia where its once-fervent following has withered.

The handset, to be presented at a glitzy launch event in the Indonesian capital on Tuesday, is the first in a line of devices being made with FIH Mobile, a unit of Foxconn, best known for producing Apple iPhones and iPads. The success of the handset retailing for less than $200 could well decide the outcome of both BlackBerry’s tie-up with the contract manufacturing giant and its own future in smartphones. The Z3 Jakarta Edition will hit store shelves on May 15.

The Z3 is the first phone to be launched by BlackBerry since new Chief Executive John Chen took the helm late last year. It’s initially being launched in Indonesia, but will be gradually introduced in other markets as well. Tech2 has learnt that India is one of the countries where the BlackBerry Z3 will be launched following the Indonesia debut. If so, the device could well retail for under Rs 13,000, competing against the likes of the Nokia Lumia 630 and Moto G.

Chen hopes that the Z3 and other devices to follow spark a change in the company’s fortunes. The Z3 is being launched at a price point below $200 to address one of the big turnoffs for consumers in emerging markets – BlackBerry 10 devices being too pricey. “From conception to delivery, the BlackBerry Z3 Jakarta Edition was designed specifically with out Indonesian customers in mind,” Chen said in a statement before the launch. The device will allow users to type in Bahasa and come with a special set of BlackBerry Messenger, or BBM Stickers featuring local characters.

The BlackBerry Z3 has a 5" qHD (540 x 960) display, 8 GB of expandable on-board storage, 1.5 GB of RAM to accompany the dual-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 200 processor. The cameras are a 5 MP unit on the back along with a 1.1 MP 720p unit on the front. There are no physical QWERTY keyboards here, this is a full touch device. The BlackBerry Z3 will carry BlackBerry OS version 10.2.1 and be powered by a 2,500 mAh battery.

Nokia Lumia 630 Launched in India, Starts at Rs. 10,500

Nokia has launched a new smartphone, Lumia 630 in India. The phone comes in two variants – Single SIM and Dual SIM. This is the first Windows Phone smartphone to feature dual SIM functionality.

On the hardware front, the phone is powered by 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor accompanied by 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory, with up to 128GB external memory support. The RAM, in our opinion, should have been increased to 1GB to ensure better performance. Nokia however claims that it is sufficient for running the new UI smoothly.

The phone comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera, which supports burst mode and also includes various photo editing tools. Surprisingly, it misses out on a flash and a front camera. The Lumia 630 has been announced for $159 for the single SIM variant and $169 for dual-SIM variant. Considering the launch price of the Lumia 625, Nokia is likely to launch the new device between Rs 13,000 and Rs 15,000 in India. It will be a good deal for Windows Phone lovers, but the device will face some tough competition from Android smartphones like the Motorola Moto G, HTC Desire 310 and the Lenovo A526 among others.

Twitter Lets Users Reset Passwords with Text Message

Twitter last week introduced a redesigned password reset process in an attempt to make the social networking website more secure and more convenient for users. The new process allows users to select the e-mail address or phone number registered with your account to receive the reset information. “That way, whether you’ve recently changed your phone number, or are traveling with limited access to your devices, or had an old email address connected to your Twitter account, you’ve got options,” points out Twitter in a blog post.

Twitter has rolled out a new password reset process for Android and iOS users. Twitter explains that it has developed a system that analyses log in attempts on users' account by considering factors such as location, device and log in history and identifies suspicious behaviour.

“If we identify a login attempt as suspicious, we’ll ask you a simple question about your account — something that only you know — to verify that your account is secure before granting access. We’ll also send you an email to let you know that we’ve detected unusual activity so you can update your password if need be,” adds Twitter.

With online security and privacy becoming a prime concern, Twitter's new security feature is certainly a welcome move. Twitter has been long targeted by cyber criminals, though it has made various efforts to improve security features on the social network.
