Dutch Airline Wants You To Use Social Sites To Choose Who You Sit By

According to travel site tnooz, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will launch a new feature next year called “meet & seat,” an opt-in application that integrates your Facebook and LinkedIn contacts to provide more friendly flights. Using these sites’ social graphs, users will see other buyers’ profiles. This, in turn, gives you some information about where you might want to sit: near an old business contact or maybe as far away from him as possible, for example.

Obviously since this is an opt-in tool, consumers won’t have their Facebook or LinkedIn accounts automatically fed into the system. Still, we can imagine a few less than ideal scenarios this technology could yield. There’s definitely a creepy factor to other flyers being able to determine they want to sit next to you. Of course if you’re flying with friends you probably know it in advance: how often do you randomly wind up on the same flight as someone you know? And then you choose to book a seat next to them (or not, that’s up to you). But just perusing the patrons of your flight and picking and choosing who you want to sit next to seems ripe for privacy problems… not to mention some awkward flights.

But we have to give it to KLM Airlines, because air seems to be the last platform social hasn’t gotten its hands on quite yet. Applications that show you who are going to concerts exist, and sites like AirBnb, Wanderfly, and GetAround have all leveraged the social-meets-travel angle. Getting specific with your flight is sort of like the final frontier of linked experiences. A few other startups have also taken notice: FlyerTalk works as a gateway to finding other users while they are traveling, and Planely is a social network that takes your travel plans and tells you who from Facebook and LinkedIn shares them (pretty much exactly like KLM’s new feature).

YouTube Grants Schools Special Access To 400,000 Educational Videos

YouTube has an enormous collection of educational clips that could be used by teachers, but many schools choose to block the site so that kids won't be able to access unsavory videos. Even if the site can be accessed, teachers still don't use YouTube inside the classroom, as they're worried about students getting distracted by music videos or cute clips of cats and fish slamming clams. To circumvent the issue, the site recently launched a YouTube for Schools program separate from the rest of the site. This means school administrators can allow access to it on their wireless networks, while keeping the rest of the site blocked.

The program puts approximately 400,000 YouTube Education videos (including ones from trusted institutions like the Smithsonian) in the hands of teachers, who can use them to capture the interest of even those with incredibly short attention spans. Watching videos could also make learning complicated ideas a lot easier, compared to visualizing doodles drawn with chalk on blackboards. Right now, the clips are broken down into 300 playlists separated by subjects to make it easier for educators.

If you're a parent or a teacher who'd like access to the YouTube for Schools program, visit the site for more information to start making your kids' school days a lot more enjoyable ! ! ! ! ! !

Apple Store Opens In Grand Central Station

Finally, The gadget giant opened its newest Manhattan outpost in New York's Grand Central Terminal Friday morning. A couple of hundred people were lined up when the store opened at 10 a.m., the Wall Street Journal reports, including a California retiree who has attended more than two dozen Apple store openings.

The store inside the historic New York City train station becomes Apple's new flagship store in New York, even though it's a departure from the sleek, tech-friendly look of the city's other Apple outlets.
The Apple logo is more conservatively displayed inside the Grand Central location, and the architecture of the store's set up blends in with the overall design of GCT.

The Grand Central location also feature two Genius Bars, and, just for commuters: 15-minute express classes on using Apple products. More than 300 people will be employed at the newest Apple store, making it a good spot for Christmas shopping and, if those rumors are true, snagging the iPad 3 in February.

Google Brings Circle Into Gmail

Gmail is getting new features. The search giant Google has announced adding features that aim to deepen the integration between its fledgling social network Google+ and Gmail. In a post on the official Gmail blog titled "Gmail and Contacts get better with Google+," engineering director Mark Striebeck writes that the company is introducing some new integrations with Google+ that it thinks will make Gmail and Contacts even better.

For example, if a user is on Google+, he can grow his Circles, filter emails and contacts by Circles, keep all his contact information up-to-date automatically and share photos to Google+, all right from Gmail and Contacts. Also, when a user will open an email from someone connected to him on Google+, he can see the most recent post they've shared on the right-hand side of the conversation. If they're not in his Circles yet, he can easily add them straight from Gmail.

Similarly, if a user's contacts have a Google profile, their contact entry in Gmail will be updated with the profile information they have shared with him, including phone numbers, email addresses and more. Not, just this, if they change it in the future, the user will get those updates automatically. Photo recognition too has come to Google +, users can now share photo attachments with just one click. The images will be uploaded to their Google+ photos and be viewable only to the Circles that they want to share with.

Congress Website Hacked, Sonia Gandhi's Profile Defaced

Hackers broke into the official website of India's ruling Congress party on Friday and defaced the profile page of party president Sonia Gandhi with a pornographic message. The attack coincided with Gandhi's 65th birthday and came just days after the Indian government pledged a crackdown on "unacceptable" Internet content, that included faked naked pictures of the Congress leader.

"I have been informed that the website has been hacked," Congress spokesman Tom Vadakhan said, adding that the site had been swiftly closed down once the intrusion was detected. The pornographic text included a reference to a Pakistan-based email address, but did not otherwise identify the hackers. Vadakhan told AFP that the party's computer department was investigating the incident.

Earlier this week, Communications Minister Kapil Sibal pledged a crackdown on "unacceptable" online content, saying Internet giants such as Google, Yahoo! and Facebook had ignored India's demands to screen images and data before they are uploaded. "We will evolve guidelines and mechanisms to deal with the issue," Sibal told reporters, without detailing what steps might be taken.

He highlighted examples of faked pictures of naked politicians, including Sonia Gandhi, and other images and social network pages that he said could inflame religious tensions. Sibal's comments prompted a storm of online ridicule along with warnings of the risk to the country's image as a bastion of free speech. Official Indian websites have been repeatedly hacked in the past. Last year, a group who identified themselves as the "Pakistan Cyber Army" hacked the website of the country's top police agency. The group also claimed to have hacked a number of other websites in recent years, including India's state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, in retaliation for Indian hackers accessing Pakistan sites.

Russia & U.S Work To Expand Cyberspace Cooperation

Russia and the United States are planning a regular exchange on "technical threats" that appear to come from computers in each other's territories, a White House spokeswoman said on Friday, even as bilateral ties have come under growing strains. A range of mechanisms aimed at confidence building and crisis prevention are being planned to cope with alarming events in cyberspace, said Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council. These include "regular exchanges on technical threats that appear to emanate from one another's territory" as well as "no-fail communications mechanisms to help prevent crisis escalation and build confidence," she said in an emailed reply to a query.

Some such links have existed for years, including the Nuclear Risk Reduction Center, but others are "cyber-specific and would begin working with Moscow for the first time," Hayden said, without giving a projected start date. A representative of the Russian Embassy in Washington did not return a phone call seeking comment. Vice President Joe Biden said last month the United States was working with Moscow to link computer emergency response teams and the nuclear risk reduction centers and setting up lines of communication in case of "an alarming incident."

Howard Schmidt, the White House cybersecurity coordinator, said in a July 12 blog that the United States and Russia planned to have three types of cybersecurity-related cooperative mechanisms in place by the end of this month, including special "24/7" communications links. Hayden, the spokeswoman, declined to spell out the status of the talks with Russia, referring only to "ongoing diplomatic discussions." No such links were being announced for now with China or any other country, she said.Strains between Washington and Moscow over Russia's disputed parliamentary elections are threatening President Barack Obama's "reset" policy, and the two countries remain at odds over NATO missile defense plans in Europe.

In another sore point, a U.S. intelligence report to Congress in October said Russia's intelligence services "are conducting a range of activities to collect economic information and technology from U.S. targets."
"We judge that the governments of China and Russia will remain aggressive and capable collectors of sensitive U.S. economic information and technologies, particularly in cyberspace," the Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive, a U.S. intelligence arm, said. Schmidt, in his blog, did not speak of any attempt to reduce the risk of spying but rather of heading off threats to both sides such as "botnets," a collection of computers that can be used to swamp a web site with incoming traffic or other malicious action.

EU Commissioner Calls For New Tools For Bloggers

The European Union should help teach bloggers living under oppressive regimes how to communicate freely and avoid detection, and develop technology to help them, the bloc's digital affairs commissioner said Friday.
Speaking at an online free speech conference, Neelie Kroes said digital dissidents need tools that are "simple and ready-made."

"I want the EU to help develop and distribute these tools," she said.

Governments, companies and civil liberties groups are meeting at the Freedom Online conference at the Dutch Foreign Ministry in hopes of creating a coalition of like-minded groups to promote Internet freedoms.
Bloggers and users of social networks played a key role in fomenting the revolutions of the "Arab Spring" — and took great risks. In an emotional speech, Syrian blogger Amjad Baiazy said his country's surveillance system was built by Western companies. He said he was arrested and tortured in May for expressing his opinion online, and a friend was arrested as recently as this week for a Facebook posting. He called on governments to fight for "security of citizens, not corporations or governments."

Dutch member of parliament Marietje Schaake echoed Clinton's call, saying that companies "with a reputation to lose" — such as Google, one of the conference's sponsors — are more likely to heed it. However, she said less well-known companies may need incentives or laws to restrain them. She said it was ironic there is also conference being held this week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aimed at disseminating advanced surveillance techniques.

This will "give great incentives to governments like China to do the same," she said, blocking political speech they don't approve and arguing that their censorship practices are no different than those in the West.
Karen Reilly of the TOR project, which helps Internet users browse the web anonymously, said governments should listen less to the copyright lobby. She said her organization could use assistance in answering technical questions in local languages, noting that addition of a Persian service had opened up a flood of communication from Iran.

Among concrete actions taken Friday, the Dutch government pledged €1 million ($1.3 million) to develop "mesh" networks — networks that use mobile phones to create a backup system to disseminate information when a government tries to block the Internet or social networks. He named Syria, Iran and Zimbabwe as target countries.

World's Most Expensive Accident

Eight Ferraris, A Lamborghini, and Two Mercedes

TOKYOEight supercar Ferraris among 15 SUVs in $4 million worth pile up in a crumbled heap on the highway of Tokyo on late Sunday. This is Japan’s worst ever-traffic pile up of supercars ranging from Ferrari to Lamborghini.

The expensive crash which is involved over 400 m east-bound side of Chugoku Expressway, the cops are calling a ‘throng of narcissists’. Vehicles included in the crash were eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini, two Mercedes and a host of Toyota Prius- world’s most fuel efficient car.

Even a used Ferrari in Japan can fetch $100,000 or more, meaning the total damage may be $1 million or more. Police declined to comment on the total amount of damage, but said some of the vehicles were beyond repair. NTV quoted the driver of one of the tow trucks brought in to clear the scene as saying it was the most expensive crash site he had ever seen.

As per the reports, 20 supercars were zooming speedily on the wet highway from Kyushu to Hiroshima, when the 60 year-old businessman, a leading driver in Ferrari F430 Scuderia lost control and slid rashly, and in a matter of minute 14 other SUVs piled up as the ‘costliest crash’. The Ferrai F430 Scuderia was a model with a top speed of 320 km per hour. Thankfully no one lost their lives, except only five people were injured as per the police reports. An unidentified male eyewitness said to the TBS network, “A group of cars were racing at 140-160 km per hour. But just then one of them revolved and all the others too ended up in this huge mess.”

Android Market Surpasses 10 Billion Downloads

Google’s celebrating a pretty big app market milestone: 10 billion apps served…er..downloaded. In a blog post, the search giant announced the landmark for the store, which serves its mobile OS-phone-carrying customers, noting that app downloads have been accelerating over the last year or so.

“One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it’s describing the speed at which something is growing, it’s simply amazing,” noted Eric Chu, Director, Android Developer Ecosystem in the post. It took Google’s Android Market 20 months to reach its first 1 billion app downloads. The second billion reportedly took five month. Downloads to the 200 million activated Android devices worldwide (a number Google announced at its Google Music event) is now happening at an incredbile 1 billion app installs every 30 days.

Apple celebrated its App Store’s 10 billionth download in January of this year and had a similarly dramatic growth trajectory (it had approximately 3 billion downloads in January of 2010). While Apple celebrated the milestone by giving one lucky App Store cusotmer a $10,000 iTunes gift card, Google’s turning the milestone into a 10-day-event. Starting today, it’s discounting a wide variety of apps that normally cost anywhere from $0.99 to $6.99 to $0.10 an app. Among the app vendors participating in the program are EA, Gameloft and Glu Mobile.

Glu Mobile, which has been on Android since the early days of the T-Mobile G1 phone with Bonzai Blast and Brain Genius Deluxe, will offer two discounted games: Deer Hunter 3D and Super KO Boxing.
“We’re focusing as much as possible to launch on Android the same day as we do on iOS,” Mike DeLaet, VP of Sales & Marketing, Glu Mobile, told Mashable. DeLaet noted that Android revenues have doubled quarter over quarter, though they still do not surpass those on iOS. “In earnings Android is 30% of revenue, so definitely smaller than iOS but we feel the growth is there in the long term,” explained DeLaet.

Former HP Chair Dunn Dies At 58

Patricia Dunn, the former Hewlett-Packard Co. chairwoman who authorized a boardroom surveillance probe that ultimately sullied her remarkable rise from investment bank typist to the corporate upper class, has died after a long bout with cancer. She was 58. Dunn died Sunday morning at her home in Orinda surrounded by her family, according to her sister, Debbie Lammers. She said Dunn's ovarian cancer had returned.
Once one of the most powerful women in corporate America, Dunn saw her career tarnished in 2006 when she was ousted from HP and brought up on criminal charges — which were ultimately dropped — for approving the company's plan to snoop into the private phone records of board members, journalists and HP employees to catch people leaking to the media.

Dunn long maintained that she was a scapegoat. She said she was being unfairly vilified for the tactics of third-party investigators she did not hire or directly control. She emphasized that she didn't know the inner workings of the investigations and that she relied on HP's security and legal teams for assurance that the tactics were legal.

The scandal unfolded as Dunn continued to battle a disease that had haunted her through a sparkling investment banking career and a stormy nine-year stretch on the board of HP, one of the world's largest technology companies. Dunn had spent time on philanthropic matters in the years since the scandal, Lammers said. Dunn and her husband, Bill Jahnke, endowed a faculty position at the University of California, San Francisco's Department of Surgery named in honor of her mother, who also died of cancer.
Lammers said she wanted people to remember her sister's "incredibly influential rise in her professional life and her courage and valiant battles over the course of her treatments."

Dunn joined HP's board in 1998 and was instrumental in the hiring and firing of CEO Carly Fiorina, whose flamboyant personality and ferocity in securing the $19 billion purchase of Compaq Computer Corp. ultimately helped hasten her ouster amid a sagging stock price and disappointing results from the combined company.

Dunn was the one who announced Fiorina's ouster in February 2005 and named her low-key successor, Mark Hurd, previously CEO of NCR Corp. Hurd himself was ousted last year after an investigation into a sexual harassment claim found inconsistencies in expense reports filed. Dunn also assumed Fiorina's role as chairwoman at the time. Dunn was forced out in that role in September 2006 in an embarrassing scandal involving spying on the telephone records of board members and journalists to ferret out the source of leaks to the media.

After working briefly as a part-time reporter for a community newspaper in San Francisco, Dunn began her corporate climb by capitalizing on a temporary typist gig that she landed at an investment firm in the 1970s.
She was able to turn the two-week typing assignment into full-time work and managed to quickly rise through the ranks by earning a reputation as a hard-edged businesswoman. That reputation eventually helped her earn the promotion to CEO of fund management behemoth Barclays Global Investors in 1995.

Dunn's life had been far from charmed. Financial difficulties dogged her family throughout her childhood, and her father, a vaudeville actor, died of a heart attack before she was a teen. After the death, the family moved to Marin County, north of San Francisco, and her mother's emotional health deteriorated.
Dunn's mother later died of breast cancer. It was at the height of Dunn's corporate success when she was diagnosed with cancer herself, forcing her to step down in 2002 from her role as Barclays CEO to fight breast cancer and melanoma.

Two years later, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and in fall 2006, she underwent surgery for a metastasized tumor — three weeks before the public learned of the HP investigation that spawned congressional investigations, criminal probes and forced Dunn's resignation. As Dunn and others involved in the probe grappled with the fallout, the public was given a rare view of the workings of a board consumed with bitter rivalries and dysfunction.

Dunn's family is planning a memorial service in San Francisco. Dunn is survived by her husband, Jahnke; three adult children, Janai Brengman, Michelle Cox and Michael Jahnke; ten grandchildren; a brother, Paul Dunn, and a sister, Lammers.

India Wants Google & Facebook To Censor User Content

India's government wants Internet companies and social networks like Facebook to screen content from users in India before posting it, according to a report from The New York Times. Kapil Sibal, India's telecommunications minister, and executives from the Indian units of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook will meet on Monday to discuss the request. Sibal has made the request at previous meetings with Internet service providers and Facebook.

According to The Times report, which cites "executives of Internet companies," Sibal told the companies at these meetings that he expected humans rather than machines to screen user-generated pages for disparaging, inflammatory or defamatory content and that this content should be deleted before it's posted. The companies plan to tell Sibal that his request is impossible due to both the volume of user content and the vagueness of what is or is not defamatory.
This isn't the first time that India has made what Internet companies consider to be unreasonable requests for regulating content. Last year, the Indian government threatened to shut off BlackBerry services entirely when the device maker refused law enforcement agencies access to encrypted data (ultimately it did not).
And in April, India enacted regulations that required websites to remove all objectionable material, including anything "grossly harmful, harassing, blasphemous," "ethnically objectionable," "disparaging" or that impersonates another person. A memo from Google that outlined its objections to the regulations, including concern about placing limits on free speech, leaked to The Wall Street Journal about a month later.

Under these new rules, websites are required to remove objectionable content identified by authorities within 36 hours. Between January and June of this year, according to Google's Transparency Report, India has made 68 requests to remove content from the search engine -- the fifth highest number of requests from any country. Brazil, Germany, the United States, South Korea and Taiwan made more requests than India.

YouTube Redesign Emphasizes Content Channels

In its ongoing bid to lure TV viewers online, YouTube has redesigned its homepage to emphasize channels.
On the redesigned homepage, unveiled Thursday, channels now occupy the wide, middle column. Recommended videos can be found at the right and one's profile and other popular channels are on the left.
Why channels? Google's streaming site recently announced a series of high-profile content partners in October, from Jay-Z to Amy Poehler to Ashton Kutcher. This new venture involves the creation of about 100 channels of original, professional content.

As channels like "Car and Driver Television" debut and attract a following, this redesign will make it even easier to find them. The channels one subscribes to are in the middle and other popular options are on the left, sorted by category. This is also about keeping viewers for longer. Rather than have users come, click on a video or two and leave -- as the old design encouraged -- users may be more tempted to stick around if they load up on all the content of a few channels.

Channels aren't the only reason for the redesign though. Google has been in an extreme makeover mood, redesigning Gmail, Google Reader and launching Google+ this summer.
