Sony to Exit PC Market, Sell VAIO Brand

Sony's decision to exit the PC business means that after 17 years in the industry, the Vaio brand will probably disappear from western retailers before the end of 2014. As the PC market has contracted over the past two years, from a peak of 361m in 2011 to 315m last year, it has become harder for smaller players to make a profit. Calculations based on financial results suggest that the average selling price of a PC made by the "big five" fell from $614 at the start of 2010 to $544 (£332) in the autumn of 2013.

Ranjit Atwal, devices analyst at research firm Gartner, says there is a shakeout coming. The PC market is dominated by five big companies – China's Lenovo, the American HP and Dell firms, and Taiwan's Acer and Asus. Together they ship 60% of the PCs sold globally a year. Apple has just over 5% of the market. That leaves about a third of the market for the smaller players, and far less of the profits.

Profits per PC for those big five companies, though, have dropped from $15.71, or 2.6% of the selling price, to $14.87. That is not evenly spread: Asus is the most profitable, while Acer reportedly has made an operating loss for the past three quarters. And those five are the companies that build at real scale, shipping between 5m and 15m units every quarter. Atwal ranks Toshiba, Samsung, Sony, and Fujitsu as the "bottom four" – together they had about 12% of the market last year – and as those most under pressure.

"Sony will not be the last to say goodbye to PC hardware," says Ben Bajarin, an analyst with Creative Strategies, in California. "Those who survive will reap the rewards."

YouTube to Start Auditing Video Views

YouTube will start monitoring video views that will check users from artificially inflating video counts. The move will check for fraudulent views which will ensure advertisers that their campaigns on the portal reach a genuine audience.

The Google-owned company says that it will take the accuracy of interactions like views, likes, or comments "very seriously" as artificially inflating counts doesn’t just mislead fans about the popularity of a video but also undermines “one of YouTube’s most important and unique qualities.” The internet giant also warns against working with third-party marketing firms as some of them will try to sell fake views to users.

Google, which owns YouTube, said in a blog post, "Some bad actors try to game the system by artificially inflating view counts. They're not just misleading fans about the popularity of a video, they're undermining one of YouTube's most important and unique qualities. While in the past we would scan views for spam immediately after they occurred, starting today we will periodically validate the video's view count." However the internet giant added that the move will affect "more than a minuscule fraction of videos on YouTube." Google added"

Google Releases Five New Games for Google Glass

Google has launched five mini games for its Google Glass to inspire developers to create more games. These new games are Balance, Clay Shooter, a Fruit Ninja clone, Tennis and Matcher. Balance uses your head to shift around and stop a pile of shapes from toppling over. Clay Shooter lets the user say 'Pull' and move their head to the clay pigeon in the air to shoot it. Shape Splitter lets you slice shapes in mid-air by moving your hands in front of the Glass eyewear and Matcher is a traditional card-matching game. Tennis lets the wearer use their head as a racket and can play left or right by tilting their heads.

A Google blog post stated that the games can be played by using the device's voice activation features, an inbuilt gyroscope and accelerometer sensors. “Each game is visually simple and straightforward to play,” said Google.

The new mini-games are definitely not the first games built specifically for the device. Some of the games released earlier include BrickSimple’s multiplayer Battleship-like game dubbed ‘GlassBattle’ and AMA’s puzzle game called ‘Escape’.

Facebook Reportedly Testing Graph Search on Mobile Platforms

Facebook has been long rumoured to expand its improved search feature, also known as Graph Search, to mobile platforms. And now Facebook has finally started testing out Graph Search on mobile devices, with select users.

Mashable reporter Seth Fiegerman, first spotted the change and posted the screenshot of the new interface – which heavily resembled to web version of Graph Search.

"We're really early in the game on [Graph Search]. You can see that because we haven't even really rolled out our mobile version of Graph Search yet and we're a mobile company. Pretty soon, you should expect us to roll out the mobile version of this. I think that's going to be an important step because most of the usage of Facebook overall is on mobile,” he said.

Rolling out Graph Search to mobile devices will help Facebook more precisely analyse the things its users are interested, and help determine what's hot on the social network. From users' perspective, finding things on the social network will get much easier and help engage in more activities on the network.

15 Year Old Boy to Build Low Cost 3D Printer in India

Angad Daryani who calls himself a 'maker,' is building 'Sharkbot'- a low cost 3D printer that he plans to sell in India. The 15 year genius built his first robot when he was just 8 years old and at 13 he started building his own versions of the open-source RepRap 3D printer.

Angad was hired by IIT Bombay last September to work with doctoral researchers who were building a 3D printer and has since then branched out on his own. He plans to begin marketing his Shark-Bot range of printers at a price as low as Rs 20,000 in the next 2 months. 3D printers imported in India generally cost between Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

Daryani's products will be retailed by a computer peripherals business run by his father, Kunhar Peripherals. Daryani says that he wants the printers to be used by schools. He has also created Virtual Brailler, an e-book reader for blind people which can convert written text to braille as it scans across a text.

Shai Schechter, a college student from Purchase College, State University of New York, has also developed a new affordable 3D printer called the Deltaprintr that costs $475. He built a printer made of plastic that costs less than one third of the traditional 3D printers. Lenovo to Acquire Google's Motorola Mobility for $2.91 Billion

Google has sold its mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility to Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo for $2.91 billion in cash and stock options. Google will still retain ownership of a majority of Motorola's patents, while the remaining 2000 patents and license will go to Lenovo.

Lenovo will now pay $660 million in cash and $750 million in stock, while the remaining $ 1.5 billion will be paid over a three year period to Google. Google had originally bought Motorola Mobility for $12.2 billion in 2012 and was reportedly losing hundreds of millions each quarter since the purchase. The internet giant says that it was mainly interested in Motorola's patents portfolio, but has been unable to use them aggressively. It will still retain Motorola's Advanced Technology and Projects group.

In a statement, Google's CEO Larry Page said, "Lenovo has the expertise and track record to scale Motorola Mobility into a major player within the Android ecosystem. This move will enable Google to devote our energy to driving innovation across the Android ecosystem, for the benefit of smartphone users everywhere."
