BlackBerry Officially Rolls Out BBM to Android, iPhone Users
The demand for BBM on Android and BBM on iPhone continues to be amazing. About six million people signed up for information about BBM at BBM.com. As you know, in just seven hours, about one million Android users were using the unreleased version of BBM for Android. What you don’t know is that more than one million people have found creative ways to “side load” BBM on their iPhone. To help manage this unprecedented pent up demand for BBM, we are implementing a simple line-up system to ensure a smooth roll out. Here’s how it is going to work…
BBM Roll Out Details:
- Download BBM – the easiest way is to visit BBM.com from your Android or iPhone browser.
- Once you install the app, open it, and enter your email address to hold your spot in line.
- We will email you as soon as you reach the front of the line and can start using BBM.
If you are among the millions that took the time to sign up at BBM.com, you can start using BBM immediately without waiting in line.* If you didn’t sign up in advance, don’t worry – we are focused on moving millions of customers through the line as fast as possible.
Our team of developers and engineers has been working around the clock to bring you BBM – and make some upgrades while we’re at it – and some incredible work has been done. I look forward to sharing more of this with you here, on Inside BlackBerry, soon.
For updates on how quickly the line is moving you can follow @BBM on Twitter. I will be back tomorrow with another post to provide you with an update on the line-up and to share more detail about the work the team has done over the last several weeks.

Google Rolls Out New Gmail Login Page
Google has quietly rolled out a fresh
new design for Gmail’s login page. The new page will focus on one
account for all Google’s services and will look more like the Gmail
mobile app. The new page has been spotted by a few people only as of now. Users can log off and login again in their Gmail account
to view the changes. The most significant part of this new login page
design is the fact that it shifts the login in pane from the right of
the page to the center. Users will find a tagline just below the Google
logo that says “One account. All of Google” .
The new page lets you saves all your
log-in history and users can now login with just their password to
access a specific Gmail account. The page will also show the silhouette
of the Gmail guy that comes with mails from receivers who do not have an
image attached to their ID. The images are placed in a circular cut-out
that is similar to the images on Google+. The new login page is visible
to users in the US, but will be slowly rolled out in other places as
well.
Facebook's Referrals To Media Sites Up 170%
Facebook also disclosed that from September 2012 to September 2013, Time's referral traffic rose 208%, BuzzFeed's increased by 855% and Bleacher Report experienced a boost of 1,081%. Facebook also announced a feature called Stories to Share for page managers of media firms that recommends which stories to share on Facebook.
Andy Mitchell, director of partnerships for Facebook, attributes much of the growth in referrals to improvements in Facebook's News Feed algorithm. "We're getting better at showing the right story at people who are interested in it," he says. In addition, Facebook has shared best practices with media firms, which help them post more effectively, he says. New research from SimpleReach bolsters the claim. SimpleReach found that Facebook drives more traffic to media sites than any other social media platform.
Along the same lines, Stories to Share helps those media firms figure out which stories to post next. The recommendation widget is pretty straightforward: It analyzes your homepage to see which stories people are sharing the most on Facebook even though the media property hasn't yet shared it through its Facebook account. That feature is going live on Monday with 1,5000 news organizations. Stories to Share had been in beta with a handful of news organizations (the company declined to identify which ones) over the past few weeks.

Windows 8.1 Available Now with Start Button
Windows 8.1 is now available as a free download for all Windows 8 users. The update includes several new and enhanced features, and notably — perhaps infamously — marks the return of the Start button to the Windows desktop environment. To receive the new version, all existing Windows 8 users need to do is launch the Store app in the modern UI. The Windows 8.1 upgrade will appear as the first large tile on the left; clicking or tapping on it starts the upgrade process.
The most obvious one will be the return of the Start button on the Desktop. While the new button is just a quick doorway back to the Start screen (and doesn't have its own pop-up menu, as in previous versions of Windows), its return has been the source of much discussion, with some saying it represents a capitulation of sorts for Microsoft. Windows 8.1 also includes a Boot to Desktop option, another highly demanded feature Microsoft left out of the initial release of Windows 8.
Windows 8.1 also features deeper integration with SkyDrive, Microsoft's cloud-storage service, and it becomes the default place to save new documents. Every file on SkyDrive has a "placeholder" file on the device, similar to an alias, that lets the user interact with the file as if it were local (it shows up in searches, has a preview, etc.). The placeholder files allow users to have fast access to files while keeping device storage open. Another feature that will relieve many users is the auto-updating of apps. Like iOS 7, Windows 8.1 will simply download and install updates to apps when they're available, making manual updates (and the dreaded number on the Windows Store live tile) a thing of the past.

BlackBerry Reassures Customers in an Open Letter
BlackBerry is publishing an open letter in major publications around the world in a bid to reassure customers that they can count on the distressed smartphone company.
The letter was released Monday on Twitter and will be published in 30 publications in nine countries Tuesday. It acknowledges "these are no doubt challenging times for us and we don't underestimate the situation" but says "you can continue to count on BlackBerry." The missive notes that BlackBerry has substantial cash and is debt free. But it makes no mention of the fact that the company is for sale and could be broken up and sold in pieces.
The stock is trading well below Fairfax's tentative offer on fears that the deal won't go through or that the final price will be lower. BlackBerry Ltd.'s U.S.-traded shares closed up 7 cents to $8.14 Monday.
"We're getting a lot of queries and interest from loyal consumers, from all of our enterprise customers and big government institutions," Andrew MacLeod, BlackBerry's regional managing director for North America, said in an interview. MacLeod said it's important to communicate with customers while the company goes through a difficult restructuring. He declined to comment on the sale process because a special committee of board members is examining that.
Researchers Develop Algorithm that can Reveal Life History Based on your Tweets
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon
University in Pittsburgh and Cornell University in Ithaca have developed
a new algorithm that can sort out news of important events from
entirely trivial details in Twitter streams. The algorithm developed by researchers
Jiwei Li and Claire Cardie can depict important events of an individuals
life without knowing anything about them. The team of researchers
tested the algorithm on 20 ordinary twitter users and 20 celebrities over a 21 month period from 2011 to 2013.
According to 'MIT Technology Review', the researchers asked 20 ordinary
users to enter their most important tweets manually, to depict their own
life history. For the celebrities, Li and Cardie used Wikipedia
biographies to create ‘gold standard’ life histories manually. However this works for users who have twitter accounts and update their
status regularly. The user also need to have enough followers to allow
the algorithm to spot the unique pattern of responses that identifies
important tweets.
A recent study by Researchers from Media Effects Research Laboratory found that users profiles on social media sites like Facebook,
can hint at an individuals self-esteem and self-determination. The
study depicted that people with lower as well as high self esteem spend a
lot of time on building their social media profiles. The survey found
that people with lower self esteem constantly monitor posts and updates
about themselves, and people with high self esteem add more information
about themselves on social networking sites.

Nexus 5 Pricing and Release Date Rumours
The Nexus 5 could be announced as soon as next week with the specifications of the device leaked in an LG D-821 service manual. We've rounded up all the possible release date, price and specs for the Google Nexus 5. The Nexus 5 is likely to be Google's next flagship Android smartphone. It will probably be joined by a new version of the Nexus 10, too. So naturally, we're keen to know what it will offer and when it will be available.
Although the Nexus 4 has had issues with stock shortages, it's been well received and popular with punters. A high-end smartphone for £239 is a bargain even if it's a bit limited on storage.
As per the listing, the Nexus 5 will be hitting retailers on November 14. The price of the two variants of the smartphone is listed as 44,600 yen (approx. $460, Rs.28,500) for the 16GB variant and 49,800 yen (approx. $513, Rs. 32,000) for the 32GB.
By 2017, Half of First-time Computer Purchases to be a Tablet: Gartner
Smartphones and tablets are slowly taking over the PC space, and are expected to constitute nearly 80 percent of device spending by 2017. Research firm Garter predicts that by 2017, nearly half of first-time computer purchases will be a tablet. Gartner further states that global IT spending is expected to touch $3.8 trillion in 2014, a 3.6 percent increase from 2013. “The Digital Industrial Economy will be built on the foundations of Nexus of Forces (which includes confluence and integration of cloud, social collaboration, mobile and information) and the Internet of Everything by combining the physical world and virtual." adds Sondergaard.
“Digital changes the IT market in a big way through the Internet of Things. In the technology and telecom sectors, revenue associated with the Internet of Things will exceed $309 billion per year by 2020.”
On concerns related to Data security and
management, Sondergaard said: “The security of embedded technologies
that your organization has right now may be the most important
operational responsibility you will have in 2020. Digitalization will
create new infrastructures and new vulnerabilities in our
infrastructures. We recommend that you build a portfolio of security
vendors because no single vendor addresses more than a fraction of your
problem. Everyone will need to establish more agile security processes.”
Gartner's prediction corroborates the IDC report
that also forecasted that tablet shipments will surpass PCs by Q4 2013,
and annually by 2015. The report stated small connected devices,
comprising PCs, tablets, and smartphones, have grown nearly by 27.8
percent year on year in 2013. The research firm added that the growth is
driven by tablets and smartphones sales.

Yahoo Mail Revamped with 1 TB Storage, Themes and Threads
Yahoo Mail has gone through yet another transformation. Just half a year after it allowed users to send up to 100 MB of attachments, it has now increased the mail limit to a whopping 1 terabyte or 1,000 GB.
As David McDowell, Senior Director of Product Management for Yahoo Mail, told Business Today in a telephonic interaction from the US, "that will take an average user 6,000 years to use up. It is more than what anyone would ever need."
This 1TB of storage will complement the 1TB of storage space available on Flickr, Yahoo's photo and video hosting service. Yahoo has made all premium features of its mail - like the extra storage, disposable email addresses and free mail forwarding - free for all users. New Mail Plus users will now have to pay $49.99 per year, for what will be reduced to an add-free experience only. Earlier users will continue to get this for $19.99 per year.
"We see this as providing more benefits to free users. The premium users are just a relatively small number," explained McDowell.
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition
The smartphone and tablet market has largely matured, so new devices in a series tend to see smaller upgrades and improvements, bringing their offerings on par with the competition. The Note 10.1 doesn’t look a whole lot different, but picking it up and powering on the screen will be a pleasant surprise to those who have used last year’s model.
The two most visually recognizable improvements are in build quality and screen resolution. The Note 10.1 2014 simply feels like a more sturdy, strong, premium device than in previous years. It’s a solid piece of kit with a screen boasting a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, doubling that of last year’s 1280 x 800 display. Better screen, better hardware, packed into a thinner design with smaller bezels.
