Google Now Arrives in Chrome For Windows and Mac

Google Now has finally arrived on the desktop. Google today announced Google Now is being pushed to the Chrome stable channel for Windows and Mac “starting today and rolling out over the next few weeks.” This means Google Now notifications will finally be available to desktop and laptop Chrome users, in addition to Android and iOS users.

To turn the feature on, all you need to do is sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account you’re using for Google Now on mobile. If you use Google Now on multiple devices, you will need to manage your location settings for each device independently (change Location Reporting on Android and iOS).

If you want to be signed into Chrome but want to avoid using Google Now, you can turn it off by following these steps:
  1. Click the bell icon in the lower right corner of your computer screen (on Windows) or the upper right of your computer screen (on Mac) to open the Notifications Center.
  2. In the Notifications Center, click the gear icon on the bottom right corner (on Windows) or the upper right corner (on Mac).
  3. Uncheck the box next to “Google Now.”
Google has worked for more than a year to bring Google Now to Chrome for desktop. We first noticed hints in Chromium’s code back in December 2012, which was soon followed by its initial arrival in Chrome Canary in April 2013. The feature eventually became actually usable in January 2014. After it arrived in the beta channel in February 2014, it was just one step from being available to all Chrome users. Now it’s finally here.

Cyber Criminals Using Malicious Malware that Act as Sleeper Cells: Cisco

Networking solutions giant Cisco says that enterprises are facing more security challenges with cyber criminals using malicious malware that is dormant while entering a secure network and later becomes active. Cisco says that the threat to enterprises is on the rise because of companies adopting concepts such as BYOD and cloud services. Besides,' Internet of Everything’ (IoE) that connects all devices and grids also opens them to heightened security threats.

Cisco is reportedly working on ‘Before, During and After’ Internet solutions to check dormant cells. Cisco continues to invest in innovative technologies in the 'before' area. "There is a critical need to protect the customers in the 'during and after' phase as well. In our 'Before, During and After' strategy we have focus on visibility driven, threat focus and platform based intrusions," adds Sivasankaran. Sivasankaran said that data security is the focus point for Cisco and that the company will continue to make investments in the area. He further says that mobile security has become mainstream and users expect more from their IT and security programmes. Cisco's annual security report stated that 99 percent of the total mobile malware targets Android devices

"The top challenge with android is the fake app, which opens customers up to advanced malware. In our focus of putting innovation in the 'before' phase, we are also briefing up our activity in the 'during and after' phase," he said.

Apple to Keep 8MP Camera on iPhone 6: AppleInsider

Apple is reportedly sticking to an 8MP camera on its next flagship smartphone iPhone 6. According to source at AppleInsider, Apple is looking to enlarge pixel size rather than increase the camera sensor pixel count. The new camera will be similar to the one found on the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S which feature 8MP cameras as well.

"The current iPhone 5s is a good example of how Apple is not interested in playing the numbers game when it comes to camera sensor pixel count. Instead of boosting the number of pixels in the iPhone 5s camera, Apple enlarged each pixel's size to 1.5 microns in diameter, a 0.1-micron increase from the iPhone 5. The larger surface area increased the sensor's light gathering capabilities by 33 percent compared to the previous iSight rear facing camera," the website said.

The upcoming iPhone 6 is expected to feature a better optical image stabilization (OIS). The feature will help users prevent blurry photos especially during shaking of the phone. iPhone 6 is also expected to feature a 4.7-inch display with ultra-retina display and a thinner body.

Twitter May Remove @replies From its Service

Micro blogging site Twitter is experimenting with a new version of its Android app that removes @ replies entirely. Vivian Schille, Twitter’s Head Of News hinted such a possibility at a recent event.

According to reports, Schiller recently stated that hashtags and @ replies are “arcane,” while speaking at the Newspaper Association of America’s mediaXchange conference in Denver.  She hinted that they may be removed soon from the service to provide a more ‘streamlined’ approach to help new users understand the concept of Twitter.

Schiller has since down played her comments, but a recent screenshot from the alpha version of Twitter for Android suggests that @ replies may be removed in favor of Facebook-like mentions, although it is only an experiment at this point and there is no suggestion that regular @ mentions are affected.

Indian Student Develops a Shoe That Charges Phones While Walking

Rajesh Adhikari, a 12th class student from Nainital has created a shoe that can charge a mobile phone.

Adhikari stated that he got the idea of making the water proof charger due to heavy snowfalls in Nainital that usually led to power shutdown in the city for long hours. This inspired him to make a powerhouse out of a shoe that utilizes the energy generated out of the footwear when a person walks.
Apparently, the charger can also be used to light a bulb at home when there is no electricity by installing a battery in the shoe. Adhikari is now working on further modifications on the design that will make this shoe a wireless phone charger.

Adhikari explained, "When we raise our feet, the spring gets released and the dynamo starts revolving, which generates current. We can charge our mobile phones while we are walking."

10 Reasons Why I Self-Funded My Startup and So Should You

This isn't a post to promote my company.
I'm not even going to mention it by name.
This isn't a post to promote some magical get-rich-quick scheme. There is no such thing.
This post is simply here to remind some of you why we do what we do. A message that often gets lost,
in this world of funding-hungry startups.

8 months ago I started my company.
It had one employee (me), zero revenue and no product.
Fast-forward to the present day and I now have a profitable software product with hundreds of customers paying a monthly subscription, revenue is growing month on month, and there's enough cash flow to comfortably pay myself and 3 staff.
And I never took a cent of outside funding.
Here's why I think self-funding (also known as bootstrapping) is the best thing a young startup can do.

1. You are forced to focus on revenue

You don't have a fat chunk of funding in the company bank account providing a year or more of runway. You only have a meager personal cash injection from your own savings, giving maybe 6 months of runway if you forgo luxuries such as eating.
There is nothing quite like the fear of going flat broke to give you a kick up the backside to start generating revenue. In the context of startups this means you throw away any idea that doesn't make money from day 1. No "aiming for user growth first". No "figuring out the revenue model later". You are forced to build something valuable, something worth paying for right now. For 99.9% of businesses in the known world, that's fundamentally how they function and that's what you should be aiming for too.
If you are starting a startup and you have no concrete revenue model, you have been reading too much techcrunch. Figure out how to make some money.

2. You don't waste time raising funding

Fundraising is a dangerous time suck for early stage startups. I've watched many startups get so consumed with meeting investors or preparing for interviews with accelerators that they lose focus on their product and customers. Every minute you spend talking to investors is a minute that you could be improving your product and delighting your customers. Realistically you'll need 50 meetings to get interest from 5 investors, which will result in 1 term sheet. If you're an early stage startup that has barely made its first dollar, I can't think of a more epic waste of time.

3. You don't answer to anyone

Giving up equity to an investor in exchange for cash is not a one-time transaction. A relationship is formed that will last as long as your company lasts. At the least, this will involve keeping investors in the loop about your progress and major business decisions. At the worst, this will involve more business overhead (meetings, futzing around in excel, getting sign off before you buy things), potential micromanagement or having to constantly justify your actions.
In other words it can be a lot like having a boss again. If you became an entrepreneur to be your own boss, raising large amounts of funding effectively puts an end to that.

4.You learn the value of money faster

When you don't have a chunk of funding sitting in the bank account, you spend money more frugally. In general I think this is a positive trait to cultivate as an entrepreneur. The opposite is extremely detrimental; frivolous spending on fancy office space / furniture / toys etc. Not all funded startups are guilty of this of course, but funding does enable this behavior.

5. Early stage investing is rife with dubious characters

Be wary of any accelerator whose only real business creds are that they have built an accelerator. Although some good accelerators exist, my opinion of many is that they are a meta-startup whose customer is you, the startup entrepreneur. You don't need an accelerator to get a cash injection of $20k for 20% ownership. For small amounts of cash like that, just get off your ass, do some consulting and keep your equity.
Mentorship is the much more opaque benefit, but again - a good mentor doesn't need to come via an organized programme. You can proactively find your own mentors.

6. You are free to grow organically

If you're doing what you love, your company is paying all the bills, growing nicely and has lots of fanatical customers you're doing pretty well right? Wrong. If you've taken funding your investors will want to see exponential growth. Your company growing "nicely" will not deliver them the return that their limited partners expect. In the worst case scenario even if your numbers are respectable for any normal business, your investors will encourage you to figure out a model with higher growth/risk even if that means changing what is currently working well for you.
For a certain size of investor it is preferable that you either get massive or just fail and disappear - the middle ground doesn't move the needle for them.

7. You learn what really matters

I'm a programmer. But I hate conversations about what "stack" I'm using. I love programming because it is a means to an end - creating a product that customers love. I'm not the kind of tech guy who experiments with new stuff for the sake of it. I view tech through the lens of customer benefits - can a piece of technology improve customer experience somehow (e.g. make the app run faster etc)? If so, great - I'll check it out. If no, but it's whizzy and new - I'll pass thanks.
Bootstrapping forces you to take this view. There's simply no time to experiment with things that don't immediately deliver increases in customer value.

8. You're in good company

Bootstrappers tend to gravitate towards other bootstrappers. This will reveal a previously invisible subculture of folks running successful businesses, killing it, and just enjoying life. No media circus, no questionable value propositions, no mysteries as to how they make money (they have customers who pay them) - just a group of people who found a market niche and are delivering value in that niche.

9. You work on something that truly interests you

With funded startups often founders get into business purely because there's a big opportunity. Some growing market in need of a solution. Or perhaps a model is copied from a successful startup in a foreign market, and executed in a home market. Personally I can't imagine working on a problem that I am less than fanatical about solving. I can't imagine coming into work every day trying to solve a problem that is alien to me just because of a potential pot of gold waiting somewhere. That's not why I'm running a business.
When you self-fund you are on a crusade. You're working on something because you believe in it to the point where you're willing to take on personal risk. It's not a place for random opportunists. I'm running a business because I love making software, I love the problem space we're in and I love the solution that we've built. There's nothing else I'd rather be doing.

10. You increase your leverage for future fundraising

They say the best conditions to raise funding are when you don't need it. If investors want to invest in your company when you're bootstrapped, profitable and growing - you have all the leverage. You can name your terms and walk away from the deal if you aren't happy. There will be other interested investors.
You see, bootstrapping your early stage startup doesn't preclude the possibility of you raising funding in the future. For example after having validated a market and grown to your first 1000 customers, perhaps you'll want to accelerate growth and raise funding to grow to 100,000 customers. That's a path many bootstrapped companies have taken. Your conversations and resultant deal terms are going to be significantly better having bootstrapped to 1000 customers, than running round town having investor meetings with 0 customers to your name.

Your mileage may vary.
Capital-intensive businesses such as ecommerce / hardware will often need startup capital. Not all types of businesses can be bootstrapped. But if you're just a few people with an idea for an app or piece of software, you can and should bootstrap.

But what if I don't know how to program?
Learn to program. I'm completely baffled by entrepreneurs with all sorts of ideas for apps, whose major obstacle is that they don't know how to code. It's like wanting to be a race car driver but not knowing how to drive.
Programming is not voodoo. It's the total opposite, it's logic. Conservatively, I believe you could go from zero knowledge to being able to prototype your own Ruby on Rails apps in 6-12 months. But the length of time is immaterial. Whether it takes you 6 months or 2 years to get to grips with programming, it is probably the single most important skill you can have if you're an entrepreneur with software or app ideas.

But what about salary?
Money is probably one of the main reasons why more people don't bootstrap. People are afraid of going broke. Or they are afraid of taking a pay cut. If you are afraid of taking a pay cut then you don't want to be an entrepreneur. You want to be rich. These are two different things. I was prepared to not take a salary for as long as it took to get my company to profitability. I believe this is the right mentality. Wondering how to replace your $150k corporate salary is the wrong one.

I had about 6 months of runway from personal savings when I started out. I drastically reduced my monthly expenditure, put myself in a do or die situation and set about building my way out. When I launched my software product, I had paying customers on day 1 because I employed Lean methodology and focused on a problem where customers were willing to pay for a solution. You don't have to follow this "all in" method, but I think it was particularly effective at focusing me on customers and revenue.

Here are 27 Ways to Learn Online Programming

Let’s move to our in-no-particular-order list of learning resources (if you have more suggestions, PLEASE list them in the comments!).

1. MIT Open Courseware

MIT’s Open Courseware offers 2100 courses in a variety of topics, including Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The free resources include online textbooks, exams, multimedia content, assignments and projects and examples – all from actual MIT courses from the last decade or so.

2. Coursera

Coursera launched in April and already has hit the 1 million student mark, and has expanded to include 0ver 200 courses from 33 universities. If you haven’t heard of Coursera, it is the Stanford-learning-idea-turned-mega-startup that basically lets you take a full university course online taught by a real professor at one of the world’s best schools – for free.

3. Udacity

Udacity is a free service currently with 14 classes where, “You learn by solving challenging problems… with world-renowned university instructors.” The classes cover topics that seemed geared to not only teaching you to code, but also giving you a solid grounding in math, physics and even, “How to Build a Startup”.

4. Google Code University

It’s Google and it’s code, so yeah, it’s a pretty solid free resource, and obviously a good one if you are interested in Android development. Has some more advanced topics as well including distributed systems and web security.

5. Mozilla Developer Network

Mozilla knows a thing or two about what makes a good website run, and it’s put together a free learning center that includes work written by the the network and also by other sites, like…

6. HTML5 Rocks

Just in case you were wondering, it kind of does. The site has a lot of free info on HTML5, including blog posts, and tutorials.

7. The Code Player

The Code Player is a great way to get a real sense of the ebbs and flows of coding (while learning stuff too). It’s kind of like being able to look over the shoulder of a programmer while she works.

8. Codecademy

Codecademy was made extra famous at the beginning of this year when NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg tweeted out that he was going to use the site to learn to code in 2012 (wonder how he’s doing?). Regardless, Codecademy is a popular and free site that adds gamification to the learning process if you want to learn with friends. Codecademy also runs CodeYear.

9. Khan Academy

Another “academy”, Khan Academy offers lots of courses beyond programming if you are looking to be a Renaissance man/woman – but if you’re just looking to code, it has that too.

10. General Assembly

General Assembly takes a different approach by offering livestream (paid) sessions on topics like “Rapid Prototyping: From Wireframes to HMTL” – you buy an e-ticket on Eventbrite, get a password, and tune into the livestream when it happens.

11. PeepCode

PeepCode covers a lot of programming languages, providing downloadable (paid) screencast lessons.

12. Eloquent JavaScript

Eloquent JavaScript is actually a book that is completely online for free (or you can buy the ebook on Amazon). From the author’s intro: “JavaScript is the language that is, at the moment, mostly being used to do all kinds of clever and horrible things with pages on the World Wide Web.”

13. Ruby Koans

If learning Ruby (and this is Ruby, not Ruby-on-Rails) is what you’re looking for, Ruby Koans has a free tutorial, promising to “walk you along the path to enlightenment in order to learn Ruby.”

14. Learn Code The Hard Way

Learn Code The Hard Way started with the book (free online) Learn Python The Hard Way and has branched to add other languages including Ruby and C.

15. Stack Overflow

While it technically doesn’t have “tutorials” there is a ton of (easily searchable) info on Stack Overflow that can be of great help once you get going. Also, if you ever get stuck on something (and the answer isn’t already there) the community is very good at answering questions.

16. Coder Dojo

Coder Dojos are places were young people can get together to learn to code, so if you’re a parent that’s thinking of setting your kid on the Path to Instagramum, you might want to see if there is one in your area. The site also has a knowledge base put together by  its instructors/volunteers, but it is relatively limited.

17. O’Reilly

Beyond the many many books that O’Reilly publishes, the company also offers (paid) online courses on many different programming languages.

18. Scratch

Again, if you are a parent, Scratch is a free downloadable program developed by the MIT Media Lab that helps young kids build interactive stories.

19. Apple Developer

If you’re interested in developing for Apple products, it’s a great idea to head over to to Apple’s developer site to see what all the fuss is about and learn from the resources Apple has made available online.

20. Android Developer

Google’s Android developer site continues to improve, and includes videos from Google i/o as well as section that goes over best practices for designing apps.

21. Mobiletuts+

Mobiletuts+ has free tutorials/blog posts on Android and iOS as well as other mobile-centric needs such as design and also has a premium (paid) service as well.

22. Udemy

Udemy offers courses (some free, some paid) on a wide range of subjects, and boasts instructors including Mark Zuckerberg and Marissa Mayer.

23. Code School

Code School offers courses and screencasts for a monthly no-contract subscription, and also has a few free courses as well.

24. Bloc

Bloc promises to teach you to “become a web developer in 12 weeks.” For a hefty fee, Bloc will team you with a programmer mentor that acts like a personal fitness trainer throughout your learning. For the price tag, it probably makes sense to make this your full-time job for three months if you go this route.

25. Treehouse

Treehouse has over 600 videos that you can watch for a monthly fee, as well as a premium subscription that offers more features.

26. Programr

Programr takes a different line to learning code: you build stuff until it works. Check out our in-depth interview with Programr creator Rajesh Moorjani.

27. Processing

While it has taken on an open source life of its own for visuals, Processing started out as a way for people to learn programming (in fact, Programr above has integrated it as well).
Well, hopefully this list will get you started in the right direction towards achieving your coding goals, but we’ll leave you with one more word of advice from Marissa Louie to give you a kickstart: “Don’t settle for anything less than exceptional.”

NSA Recording all Calls of a Targeted Foreign Nation: Snowden Leak

The National Security Agency (NSA) of USA has developed a surveillance system which is capable of recording "100 percent" telephone calls of a foreign country. According to The Washington Post, the new system enables the agency to rewind and review conversations as long as a month after they take place. People with direct knowledge of the effort and documents supplied by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden have revealed these latest efforts of the intelligence agency. The program which began way back in 2009 is a voice-interception program called MYSTIC. The system is said to have reached full capacity against the first target nation in 2011.

According to classified summary from one of the documents, the collection systems are recording "every single" conversation nationwide and storing billions of them in a 30-day rolling buffer that clears the oldest calls as new ones arrive. The summary also says that the call buffer opens a door "into the past," enabling users to "retrieve audio of interest that was not tasked at the time of the original call."

The documents further say that the analysts listen to only a fraction of 1 percent of the calls, but the absolute number are said to be higher. Each month, these analysts send millions of voice clippings, or "cuts," for processing and long-term storage. The MYSTIC program is special for NSA in a sense that all the agency's programs that have been unveiled till now have involved bulk collection of metadata and not call content.

Windows XP Support Deadline Makes Government Systems Vulnerable to Hackers

Government systems running Windows XP will reportedly become more vulnerable to attacks after Microsoft ends supporting the OS on April 8th. The deadline will also affect banks as more than 95 percent of the world's ATMs run on Windows XP.

Microsoft Windows XP supports over four million government computers in the US alone and the lack of security updates post the deadline will make them more prone to exploits and malware. Microsoft is offering paid support extension for governments and businesses, but this service could prove more costly in the long run than upgrading to Windows 7 or 8.

RBS is upgrading its machines to Windows 7 which will take about three years to complete. JPMorgan has also started converting its machines to Windows 7 which will be completed by the end of this year. Lloyds has extended its support contract with Microsoft to 2016 while it updates 7,000 units. HSBC and Santander have agreements in place with Microsoft already, while Barclays is still negotiating a deal with Microsoft.

"There are certainly large enterprise customers who haven't finished their migrations yet and are purchasing custom support," a spokesman for Microsoft said, declining to name those customers or to quantify the extra revenue it is earning. "The cost will depend on both the specific needs of the customer and what support they already have in place, so it's different for every customer."

Cybercriminals Use Fake MH370 Websites to Steal Data

Cybercriminals are exploiting the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines plane by luring users to websites purporting to offer the latest news in order to steal their personal information, an Internet security firm warned Tuesday.
