Most Popular Android Apps According To Your Age

If you’re aged between 18 and 24, you’re probably using YouTube to watch videos, playing social word game Words With Friends and listing to Pandora radio. If you're aged 35 and over Angry Birds might be more your thing.

“Facebook’s popular app is the most active among Android owners 18-24 and 25-34, who both hover at around an 80 percent active reach. Google’s social network Google+ was more popular with those aged 25 and above than with younger users but did not make it into the top 15 most-used apps ranking. YouTube is a popular choice for Android owners with 64 percent of 18-24 year-olds using the app during the month of September.

Angry Birds is more popular with users aged 35-44 than younger generations. In the month of September 24 percent of those aged 35-44 fired up the app while only 22 percent of 18-24 year-olds and 29 percent of 25-34 year-olds battled against those nasty green pigs. Angry Birds was popular with iPhone users too this year. Apple announced that application had topped its list of most popular paid iPhone apps for 2011 during the company’s annual Rewind recap.

Facebook was also extremely popular with iPhone users and grabbed first place in Apple’s top ten free iPhone apps for the year. Pandora Radio, Words With Friends and Twitter were ranked second, third and tenth respectively.

Android & iOS Device Downloads Breaks Record On Christmas

From its research, Flurry discovered that a record breaking 242 million app downloads took place on Christmas Day, more than double the 108 million daily average downloaded from December 1 to 20. That’s an increase of 125 percent.  The analytics firm has come up with a neat chart (below) showing an hour by hour breakdown of how many apps were downloaded by smartphone and tablet owners on Christmas Day, compared to the average for December 1 to 20. To obtain the data, all time zones were normalized so that 7am in London matched 7am in, for example, San Francisco.

“Nearly a quarter of a billion downloads occurred on Christmas Day 2011, which is more than double any other day in the history of iOS and Android devices, except December 24, which delivered roughly 150 million downloads,” Flurry Analytics said on its website.

On Christmas Day, it appears that an average of around 14 million apps an hour were being downloaded by users between roughly 10am and 9pm, where the number begins to fall off sharply. Presumably the large dinner and consumption of one too many alcoholic beverages are beginning to take their toll at this point, with many a smartphone and tablet no doubt sliding off a bloated tummy as its owner sits snoring on the sofa.
There were plenty of people clearly in no mood for a lie-in on December 25, with an astonishing 720,000 apps downloaded between 5am and 6am.

Perhaps the figures aren’t so surprising when you take into account that on Christmas Day a record 6.8 million new iOS and Android devices were activated, way more than the daily average for the first 20 days of December of just 1.5 million. Christmas Day 2010 saw only 2.8 million device activations in comparison.
Flurry arrived at its findings by collecting data from over 140,000 apps using its software, which is able to detect almost 100 percent of all iOS and Android device activations that take place each day.

Find My Car Smart App For iPhone 4S

Find My Car Smart App for iPhone 4S is the first iPhone app that utilize Bluetooth Smart a.k.a. Bluetooth 4.0. The app automatically tracks where or even how long you park your car through a paired USB device that signals the iPhone 4S to take note of the GPS coordinates where you left your car when the engine is shut off. This is significantly convenient compared to other apps that you have to launch it to pin the coordinates where you park your car luckily with this app you just need launch when you can’t find your car.

As of the moment, only iPhone 4S supports Bluetooth Smart and obviously this Kickstarter project is limited to said device. FMC Smart‘s funding goals have been already reached and for those truly forgetful people out there for $30 the entire kit is yours. It’ll be available in January 2012.

Indian Courts Challenge Facebook, Google Content

NEW DELHI  - U.S. companies Facebook, Google and Yahoo, and other internet firms, have been ordered by two Indian courts to remove material considered religiously offensive, the latest skirmish in a growing battle over website content in the world's largest democracy. One court in the capital Delhi on Friday issued summons to 19 companies to stand trial for offences relating to distributing obscene material to minors, after being shown images it said were offensive to Hindus, Muslims and Christians, the PTI news agency said.

Another Delhi court earlier this week told the websites to remove photographs, videos or text which might hurt religious sentiments. "We believe that access to information is the foundation of a free society," a Google spokesman said in an emailed statement. "Where content is illegal or breaks our terms of service we will continue to remove it."

Earlier this month, Telecoms Minister Kapil Sibal urged Facebook, Twitter, Google and others to remove offensive material, unleashing a storm of criticism from internet users complaining of censorship.
The Delhi court cases were brought by individuals, one by a journalist and the other by an Islamic scholar who runs a website called fatwaonline.org that gives answers to moral questions.

Despite rules to remove offensive content, India's internet access is largely free when compared with tight controls in fellow Asian economic powerhouse China. But in line with many other governments around the world, India has become increasingly nervous about the power of social media. India has 100 million internet users, the third-largest user base behind China and the United States which is forecast to grow to 300 million users in the next three years.

GoDaddy No Longer Supports SOPA

Following a maelstrom of Internet backlash, GoDaddy has withdrawn its support of the Stop Online Privacy Act, the company announced on Friday. "As a company that is all about innovation, with our own technology and in support of our customers, Go Daddy is rooted in the idea of First Amendment Rights and believes 100 percent that the Internet is a key engine for our new economy," GoDaddy CEO Warren Adelman said in a statement.

Hundreds of website operators moved or threatened to move their domains away from GoDaddy after the company's inclusion on a list of nearly 150 backers of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) released by the United States House of Representatives judiciary committee gained widespread attention online earlier this week. The company also said that it has removed blog postings discussing areas of the bill it did suport, "in an effort to eliminate any confusion about its reversal on SOPA."

"GoDaddy has always fought to preserve the intellectual property rights of third parties, and will continue to do so in the future," general counsel Christine Jones said in the statement. SOPA is a fervently debated piece of legislation that would greatly enhance the powers of companies and the U.S. Justice Department to effectively censor websites they deem to infringe on copyright holders. “The game changer with SOPA is that it gives private entities an enforcement mechanism that previously only existed with a court order,”
"Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation -- but we can clearly do better," Adelman said. "It's very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it."

Google Activating 700,000 Android Devices Daily, Nearing 250 Million Total

Cyber Technology News has the story, in which it reported that Google has sized up the number of Android devices it says are being activated daily to 700,000, according to a Twitter update from Android chief Andy Rubin. Back in June, the number of Android devices activated each day was 500,000, nothing to sneeze at itself, although the 700,000 mark is significantly higher. Not only is Android sweeping into expanding smartphone markets all over the world, it’s even increasing the speed of its growth.

Market analyst firm Asymco charted the increase in Android activations over the last three years, and the climb is pretty staggering. Aysmco analyst Horace Dediu estimates that there have been somewhere between 224 million and 253 million activated Android smartphones to date (back in November, Google mentioned there were 200 million activated devices). Compare that to Apple’s iOS, which the Cupertino tech giant announced in October had 250 million activated devices, which includes iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads. It’s not certain how many iPhones Apple sells in a day, but crunching the numbers from the 17 million that were sold in the previous quarter of 2011, TechCrunch estimates the number at around 190,000 per day; that’s short iPhone 4S sales, though, which reportedly sold at about 1.3 million per day during its first three days available. Still, it’s unlikely Apple is matching Google’s pace.

Android is seeing some big growth in Europe and emerging markets in Asia; an analysis from Gartner last month found that Android devices accounted for about 53 percent of all the smartphones sold in the third quarter of 2011. The company also announced recently that its Android Market had hit 10 billion app downloads, showing that all those Android phones floating around the world are converting to app sales, as well. Though Apple and Google are constantly battling for supremacy in one arena or another when it comes to the mobile sphere, at least in the growth category, Android is still leading by a considerable margin

'Mysterious "Space ball" drops on Namibia

A large metallic ball fell out of the sky on a remote grassland in Namibia, prompting baffled authorities to contact NASA and the European space agency. The hollow ball with a circumference of 1.1 metres (43 inches) was found near a village in the north of the country some 750 kilometres (480 miles) from the capital Windhoek, according to police forensics director Paul Ludik.

Locals had heard several small explosions a few days beforehand, he said.
With a diameter of 35 centimetres (14 inches), the ball has a rough surface and appears to consist of "two halves welded together". It was made of a "metal alloy known to man" and weighed six kilogrammes (13 pounds), said Ludik. It was found 18 metres from its landing spot, a hole 33 centimetres deep and 3.8 meters wide.

Several such balls have dropped in southern Africa, Australia and Latin America in the past twenty years, authorities found in an Internet search. The sphere was discovered mid-November, but authorities first did tests before announcing the find. Police deputy inspector general Vilho Hifindaka concluded the sphere did not pose any danger. "It is not an explosive device, but rather hollow, but we had to investigate all this first," he said.

60% Of Students Won't Attend A School Without Free WiFi

A recent study by Online Colleges finds that more US college students prefer a hybrid of online/offline education than a pure experience in either direction. This may be a surprise for those that rave about the pros or perils of online classes, but a hybrid learning environment really helps capture the benefits of each.
Online universities tend to create a disconnect between students and their school, causing students to miss out on the chance of “bumping elbows” with peers (Cabel Harris, Professor at VCU Brandcenter). But if a traditional university isn’t embracing new technology, it’s missing a huge opportunity to continue educating students after they leave the classroom.

Surprisingly, according to research by Educause, only 78% of students feel that wifi is extremely valuable for their academic success, while 60% of students said they wouldn’t attend a college all if it didn’t offer free wifi. The study also finds that 47% of students believe technology makes professors better at their jobs, yet over 30% of students found their instructors to be incapable of getting technology working without student aid.

As someone with both online and traditional campus experience, this totally resonates with me. It’s important to bring technology into the classroom and experiment with new forms of education, because old methods may start to fail on new generations!

Thieves Steal Truck With 5,200 PlayBooks Inside

News has emerged that a truck transporting between $2.8 million and $3.8 million worth of PlayBook tablets on its way to RIM’s head office in Waterloo, Ontario was stolen from a truck stop off Interstate 69 northeast of Indianapolis. It’s just a hunch, but there’s a distinct possibility the thieves had no idea what was inside the truck when they stole it. I mean, what on earth are they going to do with 5,200 PlayBooks?

The incident occurred late last week when the driver of the truck parked up and went off for a shower and a bite to eat. When he returned about an hour later, the truck, with its haul of PlayBooks inside, had vanished.
Indiana’s FBI office is currently investigating the theft while the Canadian mobile company said in a statement on Monday: “RIM is aware of the reported theft and is working with authorities.”

The year has steadily gone from bad to worse for the Ontario-based company. In the last 12 months its market value has taken a nosedive while its PlayBook tablet failed to strike a chord with consumers. RIM has also been struggling in the US smartphone market in the face of strong competition from iOS and Android devices, a situation made worse when its BlackBerry service was hit by a four-day service outage in October affecting millions of users around the world. More recently, the company disappointed many when it announced it would have to postpone the launch of its new highly-anticipated mobile operating system, BlackBerry 10.

To cap it all off, RIM co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and James Balsillie are ending 2011 with a self-imposed salary cut to just a single dollar (each) per year while they try to get the company back on track.

Yahoo Expands Sharing Of Stories Through Facebook

Yahoo is deepening its connections with Facebook's online social network. The latest bond announced late Tuesday will enable Facebook users to share more of their activities on Yahoo's websites, including which stories they are reading. Yahoo Inc. introduced the Facebook-sharing option in its main new section three months ago. The same feature will now be available in 26 other parts of Yahoo's site, including its "omg" service for entertainment news and sections devoted to television, movies and games.

By tying more of its services to Facebook's popularity, Yahoo is hoping to give people more reasons to visit and stick around its website. Yahoo ultimately wants to sell more online advertising. That's an area where Facebook has been gaining ground as its website has emerged as a top Internet hangout. As Facebook has become more influential, Yahoo has been struggling to remain relevant among Web surfers and online advertisers.

It's been a daunting challenge so far. Yahoo has gone through three different CEOs in the past four years while its revenue and stock price have drooped. The difficulties have prompted a board review that will culminate in a sale of all or part of the company. Yahoo has been pleased with the results of Facebook-sharing so far. Traffic to Yahoo's news section from Facebook has tripled since that sharing feature was introduced, according to the company, which is based in Sunnyvale, California.

Apparently, a relatively small percentage of Yahoo's 700 million users want their online social circles to know what they're reading on the Web. Yahoo says about 12 million people have opted to share their tastes in news stories so far. The feature is particularly popular among young adults ranging from 18 to 24 years old, according to Yahoo. Facebook sharing still isn't available on two of Yahoo's most popular sections, finance and sports. The company says those sections will be linked to Facebook early next year.

Facebook Adds Timeline

Facebook has released an update to its iPhone app, with version 4.1 now giving you access to its new Timeline interface.
The timeline was available on iPhone before, but only if you accessed Facebook from its mobile site (m.facebook.com) on the iPhone's Safari browser. Now you can download an update of the Facebook iPhone app, where it shows you a similar view to that of the mobile browser version.

It's not quite the same as what you'll get on a desktop browser, where instead of two columns of posts that you get in that larger view, on the mobile version they're stacked on top of each other. Even so, you can still chronologically scroll through your life, and after you've gone through a month's worth of items, it offers you a selection of the next month or previous years.

Besides that, the app feels slightly snappier, as Facebook mentioned in its release notes. An iPad version of this update not available yet, but Facebook says support for that is "coming soon." The iPhone version is now available for download from the Apple App Store.

Facebook To Sue Mark Zuckerberg

LOS ANGELES : He doesn't wear hoodies and he wasn't a social misfit at Harvard, but the Israeli social-media entrepreneur formerly known as Rotem Guez now has several important things in common with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

For one, they share a name, with Guez officially changing his name to Mark Zuckerberg earlier this month.
The other thing: a knack for courtroom appearances, with Facebook suing the former Guez -- we'll call him, Zuckerberg II, for the sake of clarity -- and the entrepreneur suing the social media company right back. This, according to his website, MarkZuckerbergOfficial.com.

For its part, Facebook claims that Zuckerberg II is violating its terms of service with the business he co-founded, the Like Store, which helps individuals and business entities on Facebook increase their "likes."
Zuckerberg II, meanwhile, is suing Facebook right back for shutting down his Like Store profile, claiming the company had no right to do so. Perhaps sensing the media attention such a name change could deliver, Zuckerberg II set up Twitter and Facebook accounts under his new name -- he even included one in which he poses with his new Mark Zuckerberg passport.

Saudi Prince Invests $300 Million In Twitter

Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and his investment company said Monday they are investing a combined $300 million into Twitter, giving the microblogging site a cash boost as it looks to entice more users and paying advertisers. The joint investment with Alwaleed's Kingdom Holding Co. follows months of negotiations and represents a "strategic stake" in Twitter, according to the Riyadh, Saudi Arabia-based investment firm. It wasn't clear how much of Twitter the prince will control.

Alwaleed, a nephew of the Saudi king, ranks 26th on Forbes' list of the world's richest people. He has a history of investing in media and technology companies, and said the deal represents an interest "in promising, high-growth businesses with a global impact." Twitter allows users to send short messages of up to 140 characters. The 5-year-old site has been instrumental in connecting protesters and relaying on-the-ground developments during this year's Arab Spring uprisings. Globally, the San Francisco-based company has more than 100 million active users who post an average of 250 million messages, or "tweets," a day.

Alwaleed is the main shareholder in KHC, which has a major stake in Citigroup Inc. The investment company also holds stakes in other Western giants, including Apple Inc. and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Alwaleed's decision to buy into Twitter likely goes beyond his interest in media and technology. Said Hirsh, a Mideast economist with Capital Economics in London, said Arab investors such as Alwaleed have long targeted trophy assets and well established brands.

"It is ... an investment into a well recognized brand with future growth potential," Hirsh said. In February 2010, Alwaleed's Rotana Group media company agreed to sell a stake of just over 9 percent to News Corp. for $70 million. Alwaleed is in the process of launching a new Arabic news channel that will challenge established players such as Qatar's Al-Jazeera and Saudi-funded Al-Arabiya. Twitter recently began rolling out a series of tweaks designed to make the site easier to navigate. The redesign also aims to allow for more detailed information about corporate brands as Twitter tries to convert more companies into advertisers.
The company earlier this year raised $400 million from venture capitalists and other investors.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said in September that cash cushion would allow the company to control its own destiny — and for now avoid selling its stock through an initial public offering. By limiting its shareholders to a small group of private investors, Twitter doesn't have to disclose how much revenue it brings in. The research firm eMarketer estimates Twitter will generate close to $140 million in ad revenue this year and $260 million in 2012.

Apple Launches iPhone 4S In 21 More Countries

The iPhone 4S continues its march across the globe with Apple launching the device in 21 more countries on Friday.

Though no official word has come from the Cupertino company regarding precisely which countries these are, MacRumors has taken the time to piece together various bits of information to come up with a definitive list: Bahrain, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

As you might expect, prices for the popular smartphone vary enormously. At R$2599 (US$1405) for the 16GB model, Brazil appears to take the award for the most expensive iPhone 4S in the world – thanks to high import duties on such devices. The 64GB model will set you back a wallet-busting R$3415 ($1845).
The phone first launched on October 14 in seven countries – the US, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, and the UK. Since then it’s been gradually rolling out the device to more and more markets, with yesterday’s launch bringing it to consumers in around 60 countries in all.

At launch in October, the iPhone 4S reportedly flew off the shelves, selling somewhere in the region of four million units in its first 72 hours. And last month it emerged that US carriers were unable to keep up with demand for the new smartphone.

With the 4S now available in 21 more countries from today, including the two enormous markets of Brazil and Russia, Apple can confidently look forward to some healthy financial figures for the current quarter, which will of course include holiday season sales.

Sony's PlayStation Vita Hits Stores In Japan

Sony's long-awaited PlayStation Vita portable game machine hit stores in Japan on Saturday as thousands of game enthusiasts lined up early in the morning to be among the first to buy it. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is predicting brisk sales, even though the launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business. Sony projects a loss of more than $1 billion for the fiscal year through March 2012, which would be its fourth straight annual loss.

Many of the purchasers had made advance orders on the Internet so they could start playing immediately.
The device is a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld seen as a successor to the PlayStation Portable. Gamers can connect over cellphone networks and Wi-Fi hotspots, and use GPS location-tracking technology. Television footage showed some shoppers unwrapping their new purchases and starting to try them out at the store.

"I'm so happy to see so many people lining up for PS Vita so early in the morning," Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kono wrote in his official blog after touring several Tokyo stores. "I can tell they had anxiously waited for today's launch." For the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment giant, the Vita is the biggest product launch since the PlayStation 3 console five years ago. It's also accompanied by two dozen software products — the largest number of launch titles in PlayStation history.

The Vita has front and back cameras, a touchscreen in front, a touch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks. It will enable gamers to play against each other using PlayStation 3 consoles over the Internet-based PlayStation Network, a system that was hit with a massive hacking attack earlier this year.
Vita's launch will heat up competition with rival Nintendo Co.'s 3DS. Nintendo Co.'s 3DS had a disappointing start despite the company's efforts to market its 3-D technology, with critics complaining about a lack of interesting games. Nintendo ended up slashing prices on the 3DS within six months.

The PS Vita goes on sale in North America and Europe on Feb. 22

Sachin Tendulkar, Dhyan Chand Can Now Be Given Bharat Ratna

NEW DELHI: In a significant move clearing decks for Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand and others to get Bharat Ratna, the government has made a necessary change in eligibility criteria for a person getting the India's highest civilian honour.

The Bharat Ratna will now be awarded in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order "in any field of human endeavour" - covering almost all the fields that had earlier remained out of the purview of this civilian award.

Earlier, it was restricted to areas like "Art, Literature, Science and Public Service", making it difficult for government to consider names of those, who contributed immensely to other fields, including sports. "The change is made through notification by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on recommendation of the home and sports ministries," said a senior official. Supporting sports ministry's demand to include 'sports' as a category for the award of Bharat Ratna, the home ministry had written to the PMO in July, asking it to take the call as the decision would help outstanding sportspersons to be considered for the highest civilian award.

As the clamour for awarding Bharat Ratna to Tendulkar and Dhyan Chand gets louder, sports minister Ajay Maken had earlier written to home minister P Chidambaram seeking inclusion of 'sports' as a category for the award of Bharat Ratna. Maken, however, did not plead for any specific sportsperson or sports.

Before the change which is made now, the Bharat Ratna was considered only for those, who excelled for "exceptional service towards advancement of Art, Literature and Science, and in recognition of public service of the highest order". The recommendations for the Bharat Ratna - that was instituted in 1954 - are made by Prime Minister himself to President.

Though names of persons as per the eligibility criteria can be recommended by different state\Union Territories governments, organizations and individuals to PMO for consideration, no "formal recommendation" for this is necessary. It is also not mandatory that Bharat Ratna is awarded every year. The number of awards is, however, restricted to a maximum of three in a year.

So far, 41 people have been conferred with Bharat Ratna. The first three Indians, who received the prestigious award, were Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari and Sarvapali Radhakrishnan in 1954. There is no written provision that Bharat Ratna should be awarded to Indian citizens only.  The award has been conferred to a naturalized Indian citizen Mother Teresa (1980) and to two non-Indians - Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and Nelson Mandela (1990). Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was the last recipient of the award in 2009.

Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Lata Mangeshkar, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Amartya Sen, Jayprakash Narayan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, M S Subbulakshmi, J R D Tata, A P J Abdul Kalam, Rajiv Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Morarji Desai and Bhimrao Ambedkar are among the other recipients of Bharat Ratna.

Watch The Highlights of 2011 According To Google

On December 15 Google published its annual Zeitgeist report detailing the fastest-rising searches of 2011 and recapping the year in terms of worldwide searches.

This year pop singer Rebecca Black, who shot to fame when her vanity single "Friday" was leaked on YouTube, came top of Google's fastest-rising searches worldwide. Other popular terms included Google's social network Google + in second position and former Jackass star Ryan Dunn, who died earlier this year, in third position.

However, numerous other major events have helped shape our world in 2011, including the ‘Occupy' protests that gripped much of North America and Western Europe, the earthquake and tsunami that rocked Fukushima in northern Japan, the floods in Brazil, the death of Osama Bin Laden, the final lift-off of Atlantis, and more.

Google has compiled images from these key events and others into a video which is available to watch on YouTube at: http://goo.gl/432qg

For those who wish to look back on 2010, last year's video is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0QXB5pw2qE
