GTA Vice City Coming to Android and iOS
Rockstar Games has announced that for the 10 year anniversary of GTA: Vice City, their most popular Grand Theft Auto game yet, for Android and iOS. Vice City was the first game where the protagonist, Tommy Vercetti, could use bikes as vehicles along with the ability to change costumes in order to dodge the cops.
Rockstar has stated that the game will be visually rich, featuring “native high resolution graphics and several enhancements.” Unfortunately, those are the only details available so far, if they may be considered details at all. What enhancements will make their way into the final version of the game are unknown, as is the release date. All we have for now is a “coming this Fall” banner.
Rockstar’s own GTA III was a big success when it made its way to iOS and Android devices and we’d expext the same from GTA: Vice City.
Gmail Introduces New Compose Mail Box Features
Gmail has seen a lot of changes since its inception, with innumerable features being added to what was essentially a mailbox. When you compose mails in Gmail from now on, a New Message box will open just like a chat window. So say you are looking at mails in your Inbox and you want to compose a mail, the Gmail will not open a separate compose mail page, instead, you will be able to see the contents of your inbox and write out your mail in the New Message box. You can even insert messages inline.
Just like in a chat window, you can
minimise the New Message box and continue writing the mail later. This
solves one of the critical issues that faced the older compose mail
page. In case you wanted to refer to some other mail while composing
your mail, you would have to Save the current mail as a Draft, go back
to Inbox and then re-open the Draft to compose the mail. With this move,
Gmail has made referencing older mails a piece of cake. You can even
use the search mail option while keeping the New Message box minimised.
In a move to integrate this new feature
with Google+, you can now even see your contact’s photo as you are
typing out the address. You can also drag and drop the new address chips
between to:, cc: and bcc:. When you’re done adding recipients, the
address area collapses automatically to get out of your way.

the Skype contact list”.

number of counter-measures to tackle the malicious spam. The experts
have suggested users not to "follow unsolicited web links or attachments
in Skype messages and install latest security updates to Skype".
"Download the latest version of the
Skype from the trusted markets, install and maintain updated anti-virus
software at gateway and desktop level, use caution when opening
attachments and accepting file transfers, disable auto play feature as a
safe practice.
Anonymous Threatens Zynga and Facebook
Zynga and Facebook are the latest on the hit-list of the hacktivist
group, Anonymous, which has threatened to shut down the two websites. A member of the group, donning the trademark Guy Fawkes mask, in a YouTube video said Anonymous was targeting the San Francisco-based company
because of “the outrageous treatment of their employees and their
actions against many developers”. The hacker group criticised Zynga for
laying off its employees in spite of having “billion dollars cash”. Anonymous
further warned of releasing games stolen from Zynga's server, as well
as taking down both Facebook and Zynga on November.
Following are the excerpts of Anonymous' threatening to attack Zynga and Facebook websites:
Zynga customers and Facebook users, We are anonymous.
During the last few days anonymous has been targeting Zynga for the outrageous treatment of their employees and their actions against many developers.
During the last few days anonymous has been targeting Zynga for the outrageous treatment of their employees and their actions against many developers.
We have come to believe that this
actions of Zynga will result in massive layoff of a thousand people and
legal actions against everyone that speaks to the public about this
plan.
It will also come to end of the US
game market as we know it as all this jobs will be replaced in other
more convenient financial countries.
With a billion dollars cash sitting
in a bank we do believe that such actions are an insult to the
population and the behaviour of corporations like Zynga must change.
Anonymous could not allow this to happen so it's starting to release confidential documents we have leaked on this plan.
As we speak we are planning to release also all the games we've taken from their servers for free.
That being said we will stop the idea of the distribution of such games if Zynga will cease immediately the plan.
The threatening to shut down the social
networking websites come in the wake of Zynga's plans to lay off its
employees after a poor third quarter earnings report on October 24.
Stolen Ideas: Apple Didn’t Build That
Apple is the largest and most successful technology company in the world’s history, but how did it arrive at that lofty perch? Did it create all the ideas folded into its shiny gadgets, or did it beg, borrow and steal them?
Of course, the answer is, all of the above. That’s the point of this infographic from BestMastersPrograms.org, using a variety of sources to arrive at this extensive collection of stats, illustrations and information about Apple and its explosively popular product line.
Steve Jobs liked to brag about how Apple has “always been shameless about stealing great ideas,” but the Cupertino company didn’t just lift all of its product ideas, did it? No. After you’ve traced every Apple product back to its humble origins, consider the possibility that Apple’s obsessive attention to detail wasn’t copied from many other companies.

Google Maps Gets a Makeover
Google Maps has gotten a fresh new look, adding some “visual improvements” to its design.
The application now lets users get a clearer view of natural geography by showing terrain and color gradations to illustrate vegetation. It also includes labels for natural land formations.
“This enriched visual data allows you to quickly and easily see where the great forests, deserts and mountain ranges around the world begin and end,” Maps software engineer Karl Johann Schmidt said in a Friday blog post. “It also conveys how natural land formations can impact where, how and why man-made developments like urban cities, dams and bridges are made.”

Bharti Airtel Becomes World's 4th Largest Operator
India's telecom giant Bharti Airtel has become fourth largest telecom operator in the world in terms of subscribers, according to the Wireless Intelligence report.
“India’s Bharti Airtel (#4) was the only other member of the top ten to
move up the ranking, recording a 13 percent year-on-year rise in
connections (to 250 million) and leapfrogging Telefónica to become the
world’s fourth-largest operator group in Q2,” says the report. Bharti Airtel
had become the fifth largest mobile operator in the world after it took
over Zain Group’s mobile operations across 15 African nations in June
2010.
Among the top five operators in the
world, China Mobile topped the list with 683.08 million subscribers.

position with 251.83 million and 243.51 million subscribers

is at the 8th position, while Idea ranks 14th with 117.16 subscribers.
BSNL is at the bottom in list with 98.28 million subscribers.
Facebook Starts Introducing New Layout For Message
Facebook introduced a new layout for its messages in an attempt to make
it look more like e-mail. According to a post on the Facebook page of
digital marketing agency Interactive Swim said in its post:

your messages, and search specific keywords to find recent convos. Look
for it to head your way soon.”

appears on the right. There are options to add multiple photos and
emoticons.
Users can now also search by typing a sender's name or keyword in the
main messages view. To further ease-of-use, there are also new keyboard
shortcuts. To know more about the new look of the Facebook Message, read

Chinese Copycats Make iPad Mini Clone to Sell for $99
China to rip off the iPad Mini –- one vendor has already announced the remarkably similar ‘Goopad mini’ for just $99.
The tablet was first spotted by Chinese tech website Gizmochina and comes from Chinese company Goophone, which also launched the “Goophone i5″ shortly after the launch of the iPhone 5 last month.
However, the company apparently patented the iPhone 5’s design in China, based on early leaks of the device, no doubt in a bid to save itself from a prospective court date with Apple.
While the looks and name of the Goopad mini may make for some amusement, the tablet actually sports some pretty decent hardware specifications. There’s an 8-inch 1024 x 768 resolution display, a dual-core 1.4GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and dual-facing cameras. The device seems to run a customized version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The tablet will launch in November for $99, making it $230 cheaper than the entry-level iPad Mini.
Windows Store Officially Opens With More Than 7,873 Apps
Windows 8 becomes officially available on Friday, but the Windows Store made its official debut on Thursday, opening online in 231 markets worldwide in 109 languages.
The Windows Store offers an impressive amount of software for download — Microsoft Windows division president Steven Sinofsky said at a Microsoft event on Thursday that there are more apps available at launch than any app store in history.
According to Wes Miller, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, there were 7,873 Windows 8 “Modern” apps available in the store worldwide as of Wednesday, and 4,516 in the U.S. Windows Store. He added that of those nearly 8,000 apps worldwide, 88% of them are free. In the U.S. version of the Windows Store, 83% (3,749) of the apps are free.
Among those apps, so far we’ve seen Skype for Windows 8 (that we favorably reviewed), Netflix, which we think “looks great and provides easy access to new releases, recommendations and genres,” and the ubiquitous Angry Birds, one of the first games to be available at the Windows Store.
Zuckerberg Reveals He Would Have Joined Microsoft, If Facebook Had Failed
Speaking at Stanford University, Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg revealed that if his website had failed to pick up, he’d have gone over to Microsoft to work as an engineer. What’s not clear is whether he already had an offer or had hoped that the Redmond giant would hire him.
Zuckerberg took the opportunity to
address many issues, including rumours that he was against ads in the
nascent stages of Facebook. He said he in fact was all for them as the
revenue would have helped purchase more servers, as he was obsessed with
making sure the social networking site never experienced downtime. More
servers also meant that the website could expand the social net it
cast, allowing more user sign-ups which eventually led to the site
crossing the billion users mark.
Zuckerberg also shared with the audience
that the programmers at Facebook considered releasing a course catalog
to using the social networking site, especially the sections pertinent
to privacy.

The presentation would start at 10:30 PM IST (10 AM PDT). The price tag remains a big question mark as Apple prepares Tuesday to unveil what is expected to be a smaller iPad. Apple hasn't said anything about the device, but the veil of secrecy that the company throws over unreleased products has been a see-through affair this year. Most of the details of the iPhone 5, for instance, were known well in advance of its launch a month ago.
In the case of the "iPad Mini" (the real name is not known), tech bloggers and analysts expect a device with a screen measuring 7.85 inches on the diagonal, making it about half the size of the regular iPad. For the cellular versions, prices are $459, $559 and $659 for 16, 32 and 64GB, respectively. Pre-orders begin Oct. 26. Facebook has announced its user base in India has grown to 65 million users, from just 8 million in 2010. As of August 2012, the user base was around 50 million, suggesting a rapid growth of the social networking website in rural and urban parts of the country.
As WSJ in its report points out, the social networking website has cater to millions of Indians still using the feature and low-tech phones. Moreover, it has to make its platform more accessible to the local developers to boost its ecosystem. If Facebook's model succeeds in India, it could apply same in other emerging markets such as Indonesia and Brazil. Facebook has definitely taken a lot of measures to make its services popular in the country. It recently rolled out support for Hindi and seven other Indian languages for its feature phone app.

Internet HSBC Websites Knocked Offline After Hack
HSBC on Thursday confirmed that it had suffered a cyber attack that took down several of the bank's websites around the world. The company was hit by a denial of service attack, which limited access to its websites and online banking services. HSBC did not provide any information about who might be responsible, but a group with links to Anonymous took credit for the attack on Pastebin and Twitter.
Yesterday afternoon, the @FawkesSecurity Twitter said it took down hsbc.co.uk, tweeting at the bank: "We just brought down your site." The group later attacked hsbc.ca and hsbc.fr.
When another Anonymous Twitter feed asked FawkesSecurity if they were using a botnet to take down the bank's websites, the group responded, "Yup, A very large one as well." The group also suggested that other banks, like Barclays, might be next on the attack list.
The hack, meanwhile, comes amidst what is known as Operation Ababil, or attacks on U.S. banks over the fact that the controversial film Innocence of Muslims is available online here. As Betabeat noted, the campaign recently entered its fourth week by targeting Regions Bank, but has also affected Capital One and SunTrust.

YouTube Pay-Per-View Services Coming to India Soon
Google is planning to launch a YouTube pay-per-view services for users in India. The move is likely to help the film industry cope with the piracy and give consumers a wider range for viewing movies or other videos. Google's pay-per-view services are already available in multiple countries such as Australia, Korea and Japan.
“Our pay-per-view services or ‘rental’ model is a natural step here in India for the partners that we are working with. Once we have the functionality in, it will be done. There are many Indian media companies which are interested" The Hindu quotes Gautam Anand, Director Content Partnerships, Google Asia Pacific as saying.
YouTube's rental model includes a one-time fee to stream the movie for a limited period of time. Google, however, pointed out its main concern is the payment mechanism. “The major roadblock, which we are working on, is the payment mechanism – enabling carrier billing for example. We want to be able to ensure a seamless experience. Once this is done it will happen.”
Google has already its YouTube Box Office services in India. The YouTube BoxOffice features various Indian movies which users can watch for free. In India, there are very few options for online video rental services right now such as BigFlix. Telecom operator Airtel in coordination with Bigflix last year launched Airtel Movies for computers/laptops and other devices over ethernet/Wi-Fi.
Number of Smartphones in Use Worldwide Surpasses 1 Billion
A new report from the research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics says the numbers are set to double by 2015-end. The figures translate into one out of every seven people globally carries a smartphone. "By the third quarter of 2011, we estimate there were 708 million smartphones in use worldwide. After a further year of soaring demand, the number of smartphones in use worldwide reached 1.038 billion units during the third quarter of 2012,"
The researcher further says Nokia
had launched the world's first smartphone in 1996, and dominated the
market for over a decade. But the dynamics changed by 2007 when iPhone
was launched, and the Android platform saw a rapid growth worldwide. Bloomberg in its report says the growth of the smartphone market, estimated worth $219 billion last year, helped Apple and Samsung increase their earnings as they took over the likes of Espoo and Nokia. Last month, Apple sold more than 5 millon units of the iPhone 5, breaking a record set by its predecessor iPhone 4S.
According to Strategy Analytics, the number of mobiles in usage is expected to go past 10 billion by 2016.
