BlackBerry London Smartphone Pictures Leak Yet Again
Pictures of the BlackBerry 10 L-Series smartphone, codenamed London, have surfaced online again. This comes just days after RIM CEO Thorsten Heins was spotted using one of the same smartphones during an NBA game earlier this week. Earlier, we had seen pictures of the same phone alongside an iPhone 5, but the new series of photographs see it sitting next to a BlackBerry Bold 9780 smartphone. These pictures showed up on the BlackBerry centric site, Crackberry.com.
According to the rumor mills, the London device will sport a 4.2-inch (1280 x 768 pixel) display and a dual core processor will power it. This will be supported with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage, a memory expansion slot and an 8MP camera. The other phone expected to be launched with the London is the one codenamed Nevada, which is said to sport a touchscreen as well as a trademark QWERTY keyboard BlackBerry devices are so famous for. Unfortunately, we have not seen a lot of leaks regarding the same.
Samsung Galaxy Camera Launched in India at Rs. 29,990
Samsung India has officially launched
the Galaxy Camera in the country, and according to Mr. Asim Warsi, Vice
President, Samsung Mobile, India is among the first five markets in the
world where the camera has been launched.
Running on Android with such impressive
hardware, the Galaxy Camera allows the users to download any app from
the App store and run it on the camera. It even supports third party
photography apps like Instagram and Panorama Camera 360. We tested that
for ourselves to make sure it wasn’t just a gimmick and for sure, the
apps worked beautifully, interfacing with the Samsung hardware very
well.
One aspect of the camera that Mr. Warsi
pointed out specifically was that it has been built ground up by
Samsung. The processor, the RAM, the display, the 16-megapixel BSI
sensor and even the 21x optical zoom lens (23-481mm) are all Samsung
made. This comes in light of the fact that Samsung is known to use
Schneider lenses in other camera models, but the German-made lenses are
missing on the Galaxy Camera. To showcase that Samsung engineering could
hold its own, prominent fashion photographer Anushka Menon showcased
some of the works she had shot on the camera, and it was definitely
enough to impress us. The Samsung Galaxy camera can now be purchased online immediately and
will be available in stores tomorrow for Rs. 29,990. Seeing as how a
1650mAh battery might not be enough in case you decide to use your
camera as more than just a camera, the good folks at Samsung are also
packing in an extra battery into the retail box for the initial sales
period.
Mozilla Firefox 17 Brings Facebook Messenger Integration
Mozilla has released the latest version
of its popular web browser, Firefox. This is version 17.0 by its own
count. The update comes across all three platforms – Windows, Mac and
Linux. The most important new feature is the introduction of the Social
API, with the launch of Facebook Messenger.
The new feature allows Facebook Messenger
to sit as a persistent sidebar on your browser. Even though you may not
open Facebook.com on any of the tabs, the sidebar will let you update
status and receive and send chats as well photo tag and other
notifications. You need to first head to https://www.facebook.com/about/messenger-for-firefox and activate it from there. The Social API is not limited to
Facebook Messenger in any way, and other social networks can build
similar tools for use via the Social API.
There are other changes that Mozilla has
introduced with Firefox 17.0 browser version. First is the way any
plug-in behaves, while playing back web content. An out of date plug-in
will be automatically blocked from playing back any content, till the
user either updates it or specifically requests the playback to
continue. Also, Mozilla has dropped support for Mac OS X 10.5, popularly
known as Leopard. Apple had dropped Safari support for Leopard sometime
back, and Chrome followed that up with the latest update not supporting
the legacy The Firefox 17.0 also brings in various security
updates and performance improvements. A complete detailed list of
changes can be viewed here

Intel CEO Paul Otellini to Retire in May 2013
Intel Corporation announced yesterday
that its CEO Paul Otellini, who has held that position since 2005, will
retire at the company’s annual stockbrokers’ meet in May 2013. Otellini,
who is 62, has served the world’s top chip maker for close to 40 years.
The six month timeframe will give Intel enough time to select a successor to Otellini. Intel has stated that it will consider both internal as well as external candidates for the post.
During Otellini’s reign as the CEO, Intel introduced some major innovations:
- Innovated with high-K, metal-gate and 3D Tri-gate transistors improving the efficiency of Intel processors
- Acquired security firm McAfee
- Introduced Ultrabooks category
- Delivered the first set of smartphones sporting an Intel Medfield SoC
- Grew the vast network of cloud-based computing built on Intel products
“I’ve been privileged to lead one of the
world’s greatest companies,” Otellini said. “After almost four decades
with the company and eight years as CEO, it’s time to move on and
transfer Intel’s helm to a new generation of leadership. I look forward
to working with Andy, the board and the management team during the
six-month transition period, and to being available as an advisor to
management after retiring as CEO.”
Samsung Galaxy S IV to Have a 13MP Camera, May Be Unveiled in Early 2013
Samsung’s next gen Galaxy smartphone,
the Galaxy S IV may be unveiled at CES 2013, which happens in January,
or at MWC 2013 (Mobile World Congress) that takes place in February. If rumours on the Internet are to be believed, the Korean giant's
next smartphone is expected to feature a 4.99-inch display with a
resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. This means that the display will have a
445 ppi pixel density, which is really high. Currently, the iPhone 5'
4-inch display is 326ppi, and the Samsung Galaxy S III's 4.8-inch display is 306 ppi.
Samsung Galaxy Note II with Dual-SIM Now Official in China
We had recently heard that the dual-SIM version of the Galaxy Note II
would be available to China Telecom subscribers this weekend. And that
information has turned out to be true, with the phone now showing up on
Samsung China’s website.
The dual-SIM capability comes from one
full size SIM slot and one micro SIM slot. The rest of the specs include
a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and 5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD screen. The
Android version on this phone is the same as the HSPA version of the
Galaxy Note II that we had reviewed, bringing with it all the goodness
like Air View, the S-Pen features, multi-screen tasking and Smart Stay.
The price of the Note II dual-SIM in
China would be around ¥ 5700 – translating to a rather unrealistic Rs.
51,000, we expect it to be priced a fair bit lower than that.
It would be interesting to see if the Galaxy Note II dual-SIM comes to India. Being a market where dual-SIM (and dual-SIM Android)
phones are very popular, this would be a very good option for those who
are looking for a very powerful phone, but still need to carry two
different phones.
AMD A-Series APUs Now Available in India
AMD, the underdog of processors, has announced the availability of its new A-series Accelerated Processing Unit chips for the Indian market. The new processors will be priced between the Rs. 3,000-8,000 bracket and are being targeted at consumers. AMD’s A-series APUs combine the power of multiple-core processing with the power of discrete graphics, all into one processor. AMD claims that these chips are not only power-efficient, but also pack in a decent punch as far as GPU capabilities go. Hoping that these new processors could replace a dedicated graphics card is obviously hoping for too much, but AMD says that they will definitely allow the casual gamer to indulge themselves in some fun activities.
Ravi Swaminathan, Managing Director and Vice President-Sales and Marketing at AMD India furthered that belief at the launch when he acknowledged that “the world is moving around graphics and the APU is something accepted world over with better battery life (around 10 hours). We have launched the first generation APU a year ago and the new generation is an upgrade to it." This is AMD bringing ATI’s graphics expertise to the game, shrinking it significantly and packing it into a processor. For example, the A10-5800K model, the top end A-series APU clocks the CPU at 3.8GHz (4 cores that can scale up to 4.2GHz) along with the power of the ATI Radeon HD7660.
Xbox 720 to Offer Kinect 2.0 and Blu-ray Drive
Microsoft's Xbox 720 will unveil a new version of Kinect, a Blu-ray drive, and an A/V port for watching and recording broadcast TV, at least according to details leaked by Xbox World.
Promising "next-gen secrets inside," the penultimate issue of the UK-based magazine dug up several reported specs on Microsoft's next console.
First off, the Xbox 720 will introduce Kinect 2.0. Microsoft has been publicly mum about the next version of Kinect as it has about all details concerning the new Xbox. But a company document leaked in June touted a higher level of accuracy, stereo imaging, better voice recognition, and the ability to track four players at once.
A Blu-ray drive will also be part of the package, a rumor that's been around for a few years now.
Other features will include directional audio, an input and output for watching and recording TV shows, and an "innovative controller," noted gaming news site ComputerAndVideoGames.com (CVG). Last February, Xbox World said that the redesigned controller would come with a built-in HD touch screen.
Anonymous Targets Israeli Websites in Protest Over Gaza
Anonymous is in the midst of a hacking campaign against a number of Israeli sites in protest of attacks taking place on Gaza. The hacking spree, dubbed OpIsrael and begun early Thursday, has resulted in so many Israeli Web sites being defaced or shut down through methods including denial of service (DoS) attacks, that it's hard to keep count. However, some enterprising hacktivists have begun compiling lists of affected Web sites. Targets have included governmental, retail, and business sites -- some belonging to the automotive and fashion industries.
The Bank of Jerusalem, one of Israel's largest financial institutions, has received particular attention from the hacktivists -- as the cyberattackers crowed on Twitter about deleting the organization's online database. Access to the bank's Web site has been spotty. Trying to access it yesterday afternoon resulted in nothing more than a database error, and though the site reappeared, it seemed to be offline again this morning. Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Web site also appeared on Friday to have been attacked and its database either deleted or tampered with. The Web site seemed to be back up and running this morning.
According to the latest list from Anonymous, 663 sites have been affected. Some of the file dumps contain what look to be the full names, e-mail addresses, and passwords of Web site users, stolen from breached databases. As the BBC notes, while Anonymous enjoys its hacking spree, the Israeli Defense Force has begun a campaign of its own -- a game called IDF Ranks which rewards frequent visitors to its blog, and content sharers, with different badges and virtual military ranks. The Web site says this is to fight "misinformation" concerning the IDF and Israel. On Wednesday, the Web site began a live link documenting the attacks on Gaza.
Now Twitter Allow Tweets via Email
Twitter has announced a new feature that
allows users to e-mail tweets directly from their Twitter stream.
Twitter says the new sharing feature will be available to all users in
the coming weeks. “You can email a Tweet to anyone, whether they use Twitter or not, right from your Twitter stream or from the details view of any Tweet,” says Twitter in a blog post.
“Just click on the 'More' icon next to
the reply, retweet and favorite buttons in order to email a Tweet to
anyone you know. You can add your own comment, and we’ll send an email
with your comment and the Tweet together. Just like that.”
It's notable that the new sharing
feature has already been available for users via third party Twitter
apps. The function is quite similar to what TweetDeck and Hootsuite have
had a while.

Dropbox Crosses 100 Million Users, Announces 100GB Free Contest
Dropbox, the cloud storage service, has crossed 100 million users, according to the company’s founder, Drew Houston. This is quite an achievement for the five-year old company,
especially now when tech titans such as Google, Apple, Amazon and
Microsoft are investing aggressively in the cloud storage space with
their own offerings. Apple had recently announced that its iCloud
service had 190 million users. Google has also started its Google Drive
service which offers 5 GB of free space to Gmail users.
Dropbox was under a spam attack earlier
this year, which caused users to get spammed via email accounts.
Speaking to New York Times, Houston assured
users that his company had added additional features to prevent future
discrepancies. According to Houston, users store more than 1 billion
files in Dropbox every day and the number of users has quadrupled in the
last year itself.
To celebrate the 100 million landmark,
Dropbox is inviting users to share their ‘Dropbox story’ and the top 10
favourite stories will get 100 GB storage space for life. Here are some stories, and you can submit your own story on the same page. Facebook is Adding the 'Share' Button to iOS and Android Apps
Facebook has confirmed that the 'share' button that is available on its
desktop website will make its way to the iOS and Android app. TechCrunch has reported that the appearance of the share button on the mobile version of the site, m.facebook.com, was a way of testing waters but Facebook has confirmed to them that this is not a test and all mobile site and app users will have the share button soon.
It is surprising to see that the share
button has taken this long to make an appearance in the mobile site and
app versions of the social networking site as it is one of the most used
features of Facebook.
The Facebook app for iOS was recently
updated and brought with it new features such as easier chatting with
friends, faster sharing of multiple photos, as well as the ability to
give real gifts (US only).
Currently on the mobile version of the
site, the share button sits neatly next to the like and the comment
button. Just like the web version, users can add a descriptor before
sharing the post. Once shared, the post will give credit to the person
from whom you have shared it by saying via and then the name of the
person or page.
India Ranks Second Globally in Accessing Private Details of Users
According to the latest transparency report released by Google, India ranks second in the world for accessing private details of its citizens, only after the U.S. The Google report lists out requests it received from governments across the world to access details of users of its various services.
Google's
data reveals India had made 2,319 requests involving 3,467 users in the
first six months. The U.S. made 7,969 requests, while Brazil, which
ranks third, made 1,566 requests during the same period. Worldwide
20,938 requests were made during the January-June period. The report
says the information shared included complete Gmail account, chat logs,
Orkut profile and search terms among others.
The requests for accessing user data
from India had grown two-fold from 1,061 in July-December 2009 to 2,207
in July-December 2011, the report points out. According to the report, India has been
consistently sending requests to remove content which it brands as
defamatory and against national security. The court orders, however, to
take down content has remained almost stagnant over the years; though
requests from the executive and police have grown.
"Though India is a large country with a
significant number of internet users, this data is nonetheless an
indicator of growing surveillance," Times of India quotes
Pranesh Prakash, policy director at Centre for Internet and Society (
CIS), a Bangalore-based organization looking at issues of public
accountability, internet freedom and openness, as saying.
New BlackBerry Messenger 7 Brings Free Voice Chat Feature
Research In Motion (RIM) has released a
BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) v7 beta, adding a new voice chat feature to
the application. The BBM 7 beta works on BlackBerry smartphones running
BlackBerry OS version 6 or higher. According to reports, RIM will be
soon rolling out the voice chat feature to BB smartphones running
version 5.
The new feature, known as BBM Voice,
allows users to make voice calls to other BBM users via wireless
Internet connection. The split-screen feature allows users to talk and
text at the same time, so for example, they can send a picture to their
contact while talking with them. They can also check other BBM text
chats, check email, or navigate to other apps while engaged on a BBM
Voice call. Moreover, users can initiate the voice chat without needing
to text first.
The BBM Voice features a “visual
indicator” that notifies users when a contact is available to take a
voice chat. The new feature is compatible with standard BlackBerry voice
accessories. Users can chat via BBM Voice using speakerphone, similar
to the normal phone calls. Apart from voice chat, BBM version 7
also integrates with a BlackBerry ID for backing up groups, contacts and
profile information, which can restored when switching to a new
BlackBerry device.
While announcing the new BBM, Vice President of BBM and Social Communities at RIM T.A. McCann said in a statement: “The new BBM Voice feature is for when
you’re travelling and you want to call home without worrying about
phone charges. It’s for when you have news you can’t wait to share, for
quickly explaining complicated details, and collaborating with
colleagues.

Transcend Launches Wi-Fi Enabled SD Card
Transcend has launched a brand new
product to its range of memory card offerings – the Wi-Fi SD memory
card, with integrated wireless capability for SDHC-compatible digital
cameras. The card, via the use of Wi-Fi networks and a Wi-Fi SD app,
lets users transfer images from their camera to their laptops and/or
smartphones immediately after capturing them, via wireless networks.
The App is available for the iOS and Android platforms, and is
free-to-download from the iTunes stores as well as the Google Play
store. Using the Wi-Fi SD App, users can switch
between Direct Share Mode and Internet Mode instantly. Internet Mode
connects directly to any Wi-Fi networks in the facility, even picking up
the personal hotspots provided by smartphones. When connected in this
mode, users can browse and download photos from the Card via the App,
and even share them instantly via email and/or social networking through
their phone.
The Wi-Fi SD card has two modes it can
function in: Direct Share Mode and Internet Mode. In the Direct Share
Mode, as the name suggests, uses can transfer images directly between
camera and phone by establishing a peer-to-peer connection, ideal for
those times when you’re in the middle of nowhere and don’t have access
to a Wi-Fi network.
The SD Card is available in 16 GB and 32 GB formats for US $69 and US $99 respectively.
Facebook Brings Timeline Layout to Friendship Pages
Facebook has rolled out a redesign of “Friendship Pages”, which shows the two friends' history in a Timeline format.
Friendship Pages shows users' mutual friends, likes, photos, and interactions they had on the social networking website. Facebook's
Friendship Pages were one of the last segments of the social network
that resembled the old profile. With the addition of Timeline layout,
these pages are now easier to navigate.
The update provides users more options
to personalise the pages, and have a more complete look on the
interaction between the two friends. Users will be able to remove
different areas of their relationship details. They can also remove the images they are
tagged in from the friendship Timeline. To remove such images, users
need to click on the pen icon on the upper right hand corner and choose
“hide from Timeline”.

Mobile Subscriber Base Declines to 906.62 Million: TRAI
According to the latest figures released
by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of mobile
phone subscribers declined to 906.62 million at the end of September
2012 from 908.36 million in August 2012. TRAI says this decline is
mainly due to large scale disconnections by some of the service
providers.
The share of urban wireless subscribers
has decreased from 63.32 percent to 63.06 percent whereas the share of
rural wireless subscribers increased from 36.68 percent to 36.94
percent. The number of telephone subscribers in India declined to 937.70 million at the end of September 2012, down from 939.57 million at the end of August 2012 – a negative growth rate of -0.20 percent.
Mobile Number Portability
TRAI says, by the end of September 2012 about 69.78 million subscribers have submitted their requests
to different service providers for porting their mobile number. In MNP
Zone-I (Northern & Western India), the maximum number of requests
have been received in Rajasthan (6.70 million) followed by Gujarat (6.08
million).
Broadband
Total broadband subscriber base has
increased from 14.82 million at the end of August 2012 to 15.08 million
at the end of September 2012, thereby showing a monthly growth of 1.71
percent. Yearly growth in broadband subscribers is 16.19 percent during
the last one year (October 2011 to September 2012).
Microsoft to Drop Messenger, Switch to Skype
Microsoft is dropping its instant-messaging program and forcing most users to switch to Skype.
Maintaining Windows Live Messenger made less sense after Microsoft Corp bought Skype for $8.5 billion last year. A new version of Skype released a few weeks ago allows users to sign in with a Microsoft account. By merging the two services, people won't have to maintain two separate contact lists. Microsoft says much has changed in how people communicate. There's more use of text messaging and social networking.
Microsoft says that Messenger users who switch to Skype will get benefits such as the ability to call landline and mobile phones and better support on mobile devices. Messenger will be discontinued worldwide after the first quarter of 2013.
Opera 12.10 for Desktop Released, with More Powerful Extensions
Opera has launched the final version of Opera 12.10, with improved extensions and other new features. Opera says the update brings in more customisation features. With more powerful extensions possibilities in Opera 12.10, combined with Opera's Speed Dial that gives an easy overview of favourite sites and shortcuts, users can apparently now get their favourite content faster and easier. Other updates include basic touch support for Opera in Windows 8 classic and Opera Turbo for slow network speeds.
Opera in its announcement also highlights the new Speed Dial extensions for Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, StubmleUpon, Readbility, Gmail, Google Calendar and TED. By introducing the Context API, web developers can let the context menu (what most people call the right-click menu) get extended usability for example, start a Tweet by right-clicking a link. The Resource Loader API lets web developers have their extensions interact with advanced CSS and JavaScript on webpage,” says Opera in a release.
Opera has also increased support for
Macs. Opera v12.10 supports features Notification Center in the newest
version of MacOS X and support for the Retina Screen in newer Macs.
Built-in support for the SPDY protocol to improve and secure
connections. Gmail and Twitter have already started using SPDY to
supplement the HTTP protocol.
SkyDrive For Windows Phone 8 Gets Released
SkyDrive app has been amiss from all
Windows Phone 8 devices so far, but Microsoft has amended that pretty
quickly by releasing the SkyDrive app. Version 3.0 of SkyDrive brings with it, first of all, a dedicated app for Windows Phone 8,
which in our initial observations, is much faster than the SkyDrive app
available on Windows Phone 7. The app also now allows browsing and
opening of all supported file types such as documents, spreadsheets,
presentations and PDFs. The app also brings with it improved visuals and
animations that fall in line with the entire Windows Phone 8 user
experience.
The SkyDrive app can be downloaded for free from the Windows Store
through your Windows Phone 8 device. If you’re on Windows Phone 7 and
using SkyDrive app version 2.2, the new version of SkyDrive isn’t yet
available as an update for you guys. We’re hoping that once Windows
Phone 7.8 is out, the SkyDrive app will get an update to match
performance.
You can download the app from here.
Google Chrome 23 Release with Do Not Track
Google Chrome 23 is now available, and
will bring such features as Do Not Track, as well as promises such as
lower power demands (hence better battery life for laptop users) due to
increased use of hardware accelerated video decoding.
For Chrome
users, the update should roll-out automatically soon. New users can
download the new version already. As we mentioned Chrome 23 now features
the option of sending a “do not track” request to websites and web
services, a feature that was a glaring omission with most other major
browsers having already adopting it a while back. Chrome 23 also makes it easier for users
to view and control any website’s permissions for capabilities, from
geolocation to pop-ups and camera/microphone access. The
website-specific options can be found on the page/lock icon in the
omnibox, and toggled from there directly.
As for better battery life or lowered
power consumption, the Chrome team says that in their tests, they
experience 25% longer battery life than average. The feature is for
Chrome on Windows, where GPU-accelerated video decoding has been
enabled.
Microsoft Office For Android and iOS Due in March 2013?
Word is that Office Mobile will first
come to iOS and will be in the form of individual apps that will allow
the opening and viewing of documents only. For any kind of editing
capabilities, an Office 365 subscription
would be required and this subscription will be an in-app purchase.
Just like SkyDrive and OneNote, the Office Apps would require a
Microsoft ID to login and use them, allowing all information to be
available across various devices thanks to the Cloud.
The big reveal comes thanks to Petr
Bobek, Microsoft Product Manager who spoke at an event in Czeck Republic
recently, revealing that Office Mobile for iOS and Android was in
development and slated for a March 2013 release.
India to Showcase Aakash Tablet at UN on November 28
The Indian government's ambitious ultra
low-cost Aakash tablet PC will be showcased at the United Nations (UN).
The announcement was made by India's Permanent Representative to the UN
Hardeep Singh Puri, who further revealed that the government will be
holding a presentation about the much-talked about device on November 28
at the world body's headquarters. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and
DataWind's CEO Sunit Singh Tuli will also be attending the event.
Aakash
has been "described as the most competitively priced tablet computer by
an Indian-origin entrepreneur".
According to the official, the device would be called “frugal
innovation” in UN terminology, and it is a “competitively priced
innovation”.
The Aakash is one of the major projects for the Indian government. The ultra low-cost tablet is aimed at bridging the digital divide
in the country. Unveiled in October 2011, the Aakash tablet ran into a
spate of controversies even before it could reach the hands of the
students and general public. The launch of the device has been delayed time and again. Union minister Kapil Sibal recently said that the device would be available to students from November.
The government will be coming out with
an advanced version of the original Aakash tablet, dubbed as the Aakash
2. The new Aakash has better features
such as improved processor and longer battery back up (1GHz processor,
four-hour battery time, capacitive screen and Android 4.0 operating
system.).
TRAI Orders Cap of 100 SMSes a Day at Low Rates
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced a cap of 100 SMSes in a day per SIM at concessional rates. For every SMS sent above the cap imposed by the TRAI, a minimum charge of 50 paisa will be levied.
According to TRAI's principal advisor, N Parameswaran, the move will help stop unregistered telemarketers from misusing the concession SMS plans for sending bulk promotional messages. The restriction however does not apply on registered telemarketers, transactional message-sending entities, and telephone numbers. The regulator is also considering a new mechanism which will enable telecom operators to block messages with same or similar characters. The proposed mechanism envisages a maximum of 200 SMSes with “similar signatures” are sent in an hour. The service provider can block the source once the cap is breached.
Moreover, TRAI has asked telecom
operators to set up web-and email-based mechanisms to enable subscribers
to register complaints. "Whenever a new customer is enrolled for
service, the access provider is required to take an undertaking from
such customer in the Customer Acquisition Form that he shall not use the
connection for telemarketing purpose and in case he does so, such
connection shall be liable to be disconnected," TRAI said in a
statement.
TRAI's fresh bid to curb unwanted text messages comes months after the regulator imposed a 200 SMS cap per day per SIM – which was later removed
by the Delhi high court. The menace of pesky messages has continued to
trouble the regular customers despite the stricter guidelines laid by
the government bodies. With spam messages ranging from new
apartments to hair-fall therapies, the government needs to come up with a
foolproof mechanism to stop the menace, and without troubling the
common man.
Instagram Launches Web Profiles
Instagram announced on its blog its plan to go ahead with web profiles, which will allow you to share your profiles over the web. To see your profile, or to explore a friend’s profile, simply navigate to instagram.com/[username].
The header images keep transitioning like live Windows Phone tiles and on first glance they look very similar to the Facebook or Google Plus photo streams. When you hover your mouse over the individual images below the header, you can see date when the image was taken alongwith the likes and comments (below). On clicking on the image, it pops out with the web-based viewer.
The web profiles page does not have the option to search images either
by name or tags, which we found a bit strange. Option to upload images
from your computer or the web was, as expected, not present. Also
missing is the Photo Maps option which is present in the app. All of
these handicaps clearly ensure that Instagram is heavily focussed on
mobile. The web profiles roll out is expected to
be completed over a week's time, so it is alright if your web profile
is not visible at the moment. You will need to check back after a week. You can read more here.
RIM's CEO says New BlackBerry Phone Being Tested
Research In Motion (RIM) has said its much-delayed new BlackBerry smartphones are now being tested by 50 wireless carriers around the world. The phones are seen as critical to RIM's survival. The release will come as the company struggles in North America to hold onto customers who are abandoning BlackBerrys for flashier iPhones and Android phones.
The Canadian company called the testing a key step as it prepares to launch the new BlackBerry 10 software and phones in the first quarter of next year. RIM's current software is still focused on email and messaging, and is less user-friendly and agile than iPhone or Android. Its attempt at touch screens and a tablet were a flop, and RIM lacks the apps that power other smartphones. RIM's hopes hang on BlackBerry 10. It's thoroughly redesigned for the touchscreen, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now expect. A full touchscreen device will be released first followed shortly after by a physical keyboard version.
The new BlackBerrys will be released after the holiday shopping season and well after Apple's launch of the iPhone 5, Apple's biggest product introduction yet. RIM's platform transition is also happening under a new management team and as RIM lays off 5,000 employees as part of a bid to save $1 billion. RIM was once Canada's most valuable company with a market value of more than $80 billion in 2008, but the stock has plummeted since, from over $140 share to around $7. Its decline evokes memories of Nortel, another former Canadian tech giant, which declared bankruptcy in 2009.

Both iPad mini and the new fourth generation iPad with Retina display are available in 34 countries including the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and the UK, and will be available in many more countries later this year, including mainland China.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Sales Hit 3 Million
Samsung Electronics has sold more than 3 million Galaxy Note 2 smartphones in a little over a month after its launch, as the company vies to keep its lead over rivals during the crucial holiday quarter. The South Korean firm, which was the world's largest maker of smartphones in the July-September quarter, said it took 37 days for the oversize smartphone to reach the sales figure.
The Note was one of the few 5-inch smartphone in the market when the first model was unveiled last year, making some people believe it would become a "tweener" - neither a tablet nor a smartphone. The Note series is one of the two key mobile devices from Samsung on the high-end smartphone segment, along with flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone, helping Samsung rake in profit for the business division that is responsible for more than 70 per cent of the company's quarterly sales.
The latest iteration of the Note features a screen measuring 5.5 inches diagonally and a digital pen for note-taking. Research firm IDC said Samsung topped the global smartphone market in the July-September third quarter with 56.3 million sales, more than double Apple's 26.9 million iPhone sales.
4 Million Windows 8 Licenses Sold in 3 Days, Year-End Target 400 Million
Microsoft reporting that
they have sold 4 million licenses for Windows 8 Pro in just 3 days, with
over tens of millions of OEM licenses sold till date. Now they are
hoping to sell 400 million new Windows 8 licenses within the year. Tall
and bold claims, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they actually managed
to achieve this goal, given their new super low pricing for the OS.
Besides the $40 upgrade price for Windows 8 Pro,
Microsoft also extended an even better offer to those who bought their
Windows certified machines after June 2nd this year, allowing them to
get the swanky new OS for just $15. Then there was the glitch in this
upgrade policy that probably allowed several hundred (or even more) to
get Windows 8 Pro for the cheap pricing even without being eligible.
Don’t worry, MS has fixed this bug now.
Steve Ballmer shared the impressive numbers with the attendees of Microsoft’s
Build Conference, most notably in a bid to lure developers into making
apps for Windows 8, Windows 8 RT and Windows Phone 8. This also falls in
line with the fact that for 8 days (starting day before) registration
for a MS Developer account will cost only $8 for a whole year.
How is Facebook Addiction Affecting Our Minds?
Internet addictions — especially to social media — have been well documented. And the truth is, we’re feeling like we might have a touch of Facebook addiction. But what’s the psychology behind this disorder? As it turns out, receiving and answering a notification results in a hit of dopamine, a chemical neurotransmitter associated with the motivation and reward response in the human brain. Dopamine is also released in high quantities when we consume drugs or have sex. Social media notifications can have the same addictive effect.

Megaupload Founder Announces New File-Sharing Service
Kim Dotcom, the founder of Megaupload, and possibly the most hunted man on the internet, has revealed plans for the successor to his wildly popular file sharing service. Before it was shut down in January, 2012, Megaupload was one of the largest file storage and viewing services in the world, averaging about 50 million hits per day. With over 25 petabytes (25,000 terabytes) of data stored on its servers, the portal was widely known and used, and its shutting down led to great outrage in the online sphere, with many severe responses from the file sharing community, including denial-of-service attacks on a range of websites belonging to the U.S. government and copyright organizations.
Now, the latest offering from Dotcom and his co-workers seems to be filling the gap left by Megaupload’s shattering.
While the new site boasts faster upload speeds and larger storage
capacity, the encryption technology marks a major shift from Megaupload
as Mega operators and owners will not have access to user files and
therefore be immune from content liability.
U.S. authorities have released no
official comment yet on the planned venture. The announcement was
delayed by an hour on account of overloading by users on data. In a tweet,
Dotcom suggested that a lot of the traffic was driven by U.S.
authorities: “FBI agents pressing reload... We see their IP addresses.”
Algerian Hackers Attack DRDO and Five Other Indian Government Websites
A number of government websites including those of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Prime Minister's Office and West Bengal's police department, Directorate of Estates (Ministry of Urban Development), Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, and Rehabilitation Council of India have suffered massive cyber attacks.
The biggest attack was on the DRDO's
Recruitment and Assessment Centre website that deals with the
recruitment of scientists to the several laboratories of the DRDO. The
website remained down for more than 9 hours. The hackers from Algeria, known as
SanFour25, have so far conducted 40 attacks. The hacker group had
earlier targeted Israeli institutions. The message posted on the
websites, after they were attacked, read: "By SanFour25, Alegerian
Hackers."
The security agencies are highly
concerned over the fact that the hackers group belong to Algeria. The
Intelligence Bureau officials fear SanFour25 could be associated with a
terrorist outfit in Algeria. The country is said to have 20 terrorist
groups that have been classified as dangerous and have direct link to
Al-Qaeda. The latest spate of attacks has exposed
India's vulnerability to cyber attacks, despite the government efforts
to ramp up the infrastructure to prevent such incidents. It's not the
first time Indian websites have come under cyber attack.
Google Brings New Security Features to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
The advent of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
brings new security features to the platform, features that have been
required for a while to protect users from the many dangers associated
with malicious apps. The new security features are built
natively into Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and the most vital of them, is in
essence similar to the Bouncer feature rolled out for the Google Play store in February this year. While the Google Play store is now supposedly cleaner because this feature, Android users are still at risk when sideloading apps from other sources.
Completely opt-in, the ‘verify app’ feature can be toggled from the
‘Security’ section of Android 4.2 settings. Each time users download and
sideload an app, it is sandboxed, with virtual walls put up between the
app and other software on the device. A pop-up box will then ask user
if they want to check the app for potentially ‘harmful behaviour.’ The
device will then send information about the device to Google’s servers,
and compare it with a database of known applications.
Android 4.2 also brings a scanning feature, that detects any attempt by
an app to send a text message to a known fee-collecting short code
(premium number), and will alert the user. The user will have the option
to then allow, or deny the app from continuing with sending.
