BBM Most Popular Messaging Client on iOS/Android by Far: Poll
Ever since news got out that BlackBerry Messenger (or BBM as its known to its hordes of loyal users) would be making its way to iOS and Android devices, we expected it to make a huge splash. The demand for BBM was only highlighted by the number of times the leaked version of the client was downloaded by Android users, forcing BlackBerry to postpone the actual launch because of the massive hit its servers took from the huge numbers.
However, iOS and Android already had a large number of popular IM apps such as WhatsApp, FB Messenger, Viber and Skype. Therefore, while the rush to adopt BBM was expected, we didn’t think it would cause the rest of the IM clients to lose too much ground on account of them being first-movers.
As it turns out, and as our poll shows, we had vastly underestimated the popularity of BBM. Almost 8,000 of our readers responded to the question “Will BBM now be the messenger of choice on your smartphone?”, out of which a sizeable majority (5,728 which translates to 73.4%) said that they indeed plan to rely on BBM more than other clients on their smartphones. Only 1,574 (or 20%) of our readers plan to stick with the IM clients they were using before BBM, while 500 of you (6%) thought you needed some more time to come to a decision on BBM.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Catches Fire, Samsung Asks the Customer to Remove the Video
Samsung handsets are very popular globally. However, there is one extremely disappointed customer, resentful to the extent that he posted a video online that could now put Samsung's reputation in real jeopardy. On the 2nd of December, a Canadian national Richard Wygand posted a video on YouTube in which he claimed that the Galaxy S4 smartphone he bought was could have led to a hazardous situation. “I just plugged it in to charge it, went to sleep, woke up to smoke and a little bit of burning,” said Wygand in the video. Later on, he shows off the severely damaged power plug of the S4, which appears severely burned and distorted.
The video created quite a frenzy, thanks to a post on Reddit. Soon, Wygand posted a new video giving an update which is quite perplexing. He revealed that in order to receive a similar model replacement, Samsung allegedly asked him to sign a legal document that he remove his videos from YouTube, not to reveal the agreement to anybody in any circumstances and do away with any possible future claims against Samsung.
Wygand also pointed out in the video a widely reported incident in Hong Kong, where a burning S4 was the cause of a building fire. The report was later published by UK tech site The Register. However, the incident largely went unnoticed by smartphone customers. Since posting the second video, Wygand told the source that he hasn't heard anything further from Samsung. This is what was Samsung's response in response to Wygand's S4 experience, “Samsung takes the safety and security of our customers very seriously. Our Samsung Canada team is in touch with the customer, and is investigating the issue.”
PS4 Launch in India Confirmed on December 18
After a lot of speculation and rumours, next gen gaming is eventually arriving in India as we just received a media invite to the PS4 launch event to be held on December 18 in New Delhi. The calligraphic invite appears a bit cryptic, but nevertheless the message is clear.
Since its debut in the US and European markets last month, the PS4 has been creating quite a frenzy selling more than a million units on day one and two million units in just under two weeks and well on its way to achieve its target of selling more than 3 million PS4's by the end of the year. The PS4 sales have also outnumbered the Xbox One, which sold a 150,000 units in its first 48 hours whereas the PS3 sold a 165,000 units in the same amount of time. Analysts have also predicted that the PS4 is likely to sell 49 million consoles in the next five years.
While the confirmation over the launch of the next gen is good news for Indian gamers, catch here is that the launch line up is not as solid compared to the Xbox One. For Sony, apart from Kill Zone: Shadow Fall and Resogun, the launch line up looks a quite feeble, as their launch window got a severe blow with the delay of DriveClub, The Crew and Watch Dogs. If we ignore the third party titles for both consoles, as of now there are a very few exclusives available for the PS4. while, on the contrary Xbox One has titles that are stellar and at the same time offer a lot of variety.

Android Malware to Hit 1 Million by 2013-end: Trend Micro Security Report
According to a report by Trend Micro,
there were about 700 thousand malicious apps recorded at the end of Q3.
At this rate Android malware is expected to reach 1 million by the end
of this year. The risk is not just limited to Android
as various other platforms are also being affected. Users are getting
emails from messaging apps like WhatsApp, which contain malicious links
that lead the user into believing that they will be offered premium
services. This approach primarily forces the attacker to rely on a
source to infect a device rather going for a direct approach.
The number of phishing sites
specifically made for mobile devices also saw a rise of 53% during the
period from January to September this year. In phishing, an attacker
attempts to acquire information like usernames, passwords, and financial
details by masking itself as an authentic entity in an online
communication or transaction.
The most prevalent malwares doing the
round these days include FAKEINST and OPFAKE which are malwares
disguised as genuine apps. A FAKEISNT, if installed on a device, can
send text messages to certain phone numbers leading to high service
charges by the operators. In the case of OPFAKE, the app opens an HTML
page and asks the user to download a malicious file. Malwares that pose
the highest risk include ARPUSH and LEADBLT. They are primarily adware
and info-stealers where data related to the device like OS information,
GPS location, IMEI, etc. is collected and transferred to the attacker.

Facebook has recently started displaying articles based on the users search history and interests. When users click on a link to an article in the Facebook News Feed they can see up to three related articles.
"We've noticed that people enjoy seeing articles on Facebook, and so we're now paying closer attention to what makes for high quality content, and how often articles are clicked on from News Feed on mobile. What this means is that you may start to notice links to articles a little more often (particularly on mobile)."

Google Search on Android Now lets You Search within Apps
Google has added app listings to its
Google search for Android in a new update. Now, users can search for
information not only on the web but also within apps on Google Play as
well as third party apps. Google states in a blog post that the
app listings will show up directly in Chrome and Android browsers and
users don't even require the Google search app. There are two types of
app listings that will appear in search results.
The 'Open in App' feature takes you to
relevant apps that are already on your phone. For this type of app
listing, users have to be signed in to your Google Account so Google
Search can know which apps you already have installed. The “Open in app”
feature is currently supports just 13 apps for now.
Google adds that the new features are still in early stage of
development and once you download one of these apps, “it may take a day
or two for the Open in app button to appear in your search results.”
Finding apps in search results is currently limited to only Android 2.3+
users in the US for now.

Instagram to Roll Out @instagram.com Email Addresses?
Photo sharing service Instagram could be poised to expand into email with rumours circulating that the social media service is beavering away on @instagram.com email addresses.
Techcrunch speculate that the new messaging feature could be rolled out soon after an e-commerce firm unearthed a number of @instagram.com email id’s during database work.
The move follows the introduction of a similar system by Facebook back in 2010 with the introduction of @facebook.com email id’s, fuelling speculation that the social media giant might want to repeat that success now that it owns Instagram.
It is believed that Instagram may also be considering adding IM to its suite of communication tools before the end of the year, taking on the likes of snapchat with private and group messaging features.

FiLIP Smartwatch Helps Parents Track Their Child's Location
FiLIP helps parents easily call and keep track of their children. Of course, the watch tells time, but it can also pin down a child's location. Parents can program up to five numbers into the gadget, which kids can call with the touch of a button. Using the FiLIP app, parents and other pre-authorized adults can track the child's location, make calls, send texts and set "SafeZones," which are virtual radii around a specific destination.
The FiLIP's simple interface only includes two buttons, one of which is bright red. In case of emergency, the child can hold down the red button, prompting the watch to call the first person in its contact list. If no one answers, the watch calls the other four assigned contacts. It also sends a notification with the child's location to the first contact. While the child waits, the FiLIP plays a relaxing melody.
Each gadget costs $199.99 and with an AT&T plan, parents can pay $10 a month for unlimited location data, as well as voice calling. Users can download the FiLIP app for both iPhone and Android.
