Google Search Gets a Cool, Useful Calculator

Before today, when you typed an equation into Google — say, “15 x 7″ — the answer (105, if you must know) would appear in bold above you actual search results. Now Google has gone one step further, giving you your answer on a virtual calculator.

The blue-hued calculator appears above your results, as before, and has 34 buttons, including standard trigonometric functions, exponents and buttons for the transcendental numbers, pi and e.

Bonus: It also works on mobile. In our quick test, it appeared in both Safari and Chrome on iOS and of course on Android as well. Although the scientific functions aren’t visible in portrait mode, they appear when you flip your phone to landscape — a trick Google’s borrowing from the iOS-standard calculator. On both versions, you can do calculations via voice search. The voice interface can even discern such phrasing as “cosine of 60 degrees.”

Cracking open the last closed platform: the TV. A beautiful, affordable console -- built on Android, by the creator of Jambox.  There's something about a big HD TV and digital surround sound that fills up a living room. Who needs pants!?  OUYA could change AAA game development, too. Forget about licensing fees, retail fees, and publishing fees.

It's easy to root (and rooting won't void your warranty). Everything opens with standard screws. Hardware hackers can create their own peripherals, and connect via USB or Bluetooth. You want our hardware design? Let us know. We might just give it to you. Surprise us!

Social Media Is Now a $16.9 Billion Business

Global revenues from social media are projected to hit $16.9 billion in 2012, a 43.1% jump over the previous year, according to Gartner.

The bulk of that will come from advertising, which will contribute $8.8 billion. Social gaming revenue is next at $6.2 billion and subscriptions account for another $278 million. The researcher predicts “moderate growth” for the segment in coming years, though Gartner declined to share specific figures.

The advertising figure appears to be in line with a similar projection by eMarketer, which predicts $7.7 billion in social media ad revenues for 2012 and $11.9 billion by 2014. The U.S.’s share of such revenues will stay at around 53% over the next couple of years, according to eMarketer, which does not have an aggregate figure for social media revenues.

the Interactive Advertising Bureau estimates that global ad revenues for Internet advertising were $31 billion in 2011. Display ads accounted for $11.8 billion. The IAB didn’t break out figures for social media advertising.

The Cloud, Wi-Fi Among Most Stressful Technologies

The top three stress-producers are related to connecting to the Internet. Respondents say problems with Wi-Fi caused the most stress (12.4%), followed by “the cloud” at (11.4%) and then trouble with networking and syncing devices (10%). When any of these three or a combination goes awry, you can’t get to the information you need.

Virgin Digital Help, a personal tech support service, conducted a the small survey of 210 adults in the U.S. and U.K. over Facebook, Twitter, email and phone. Nearly 80% of the participants were 18-34 years old — people who grew up with much of today’s technology. But sometimes tech problems are out of our control, no matter how proficient we may be.

Consumers take particular issue with the fact that technology keeps changing (18.6%) as well as compatibility issues (15.2%). Women were more likely to be stressed out by tech than men, 31% compared to 20%. And around 27% of folks older than 55 say technology is “just too complicated.”

Many items that rank lower on the list may cause less stress because they’ve been around longer and are more familiar, such as desktops, laptops, printers, mobile phones and the Internet in general. Also low on the list are tablets and social networking. And at the bottom of the list is email — a virtually stress-free technology, according to the study.

YouTube: The New Source of NEWS

YouTube, the videos sharing and viewing site, has become a major platform for news today, where people are turning for eyewitness videos in times of major events and natural disasters. The Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism has released their examination of 15 months of the Google-owned site and found that while viewership for TV news still easily outpaces those consuming news on YouTube, the video-sharing site is a growing digital environment where professional journalism mingles with citizen content.

"There's a new form of video journalism on this platform," said Amy Mitchell, deputy director of the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. "It's a form in which the relationship between news organizations and citizens is more dynamic and more multiverse than we've seen in most other platforms before."

The study shows YouTube as a global news arena where professional and amateur video bleed together, and is made consumable in on-demand style.

That kind of atmosphere also makes for issues of authenticity. Though YouTube has guidelines for news video, they aren't always followed and some videos go viral despite uncertain sources. "This is a young platform and there're certainly aspects of this interplay and the way information is going to flow that's still being worked out," said Mitchell.

A relatively nascent new organisation, Russia Today, a network founded in 2005 and backed by the Russian government that often reports rumor, had easily the most videos among the most-viewed. The second most-viewed news organization among the top videos was Fox News, although the study pointed out that more than half of those videos were posted in criticism of the network.

18% Of Teens Would ‘"Stop Communicating" without Social Media

18% of teens would stop communicating altogether if their favorite social networks shut down. That’s according to a recent survey of American high school and college students by email marketing company AWeber.

According to the survey, 90% of teens are on Facebook, and an astounding 93% of teenagers use mobile phones -– the same amount that use email. 74% of teens are YouTube users, and 47% use Skype to keep up with others.

Facebook and Email own almost equal parts of teens’ hearts. With teenagers going for both when they wake up in the morning, while they’re in class, and even while they’re on vacation.
6% of teens thought they might replace their cell phones with a landline or writing more letters if mobile phones suddenly became unavailable. A whopping 18%, however, thought they would stop communicating altogether if their favorite channel of communication disappeared.

STUDY REVEALS : What Social Networks Know About You

Some collect information you expressly give them, like your credit card and telephone numbers. Others gather data based on how and where you use their services. This might include anything from device and browser information to location intel. And some of it gets really specific — think about your last search query or ad click. It’s probably all “fair” game.

Depending on the type gathered, social networks use data to enhance location services and target advertising (now you know why that sunglasses website you visited three months ago follows you all over the web). A few social sites even share certain information with marketers and/or third-party partners

Yahoo Got It's New CEO - Marissa Mayer

Looks like there are no hard feelings between Google and Marissa Mayer, who left the company after 13 years to lead Yahoo as its new CEO Tuesday. On her first day, she posted this cheerful Instagram of her office stuffed full of giant balloon bouquets. Each is topped with a purple balloon, ostensibly to celebrate Yahoo.

After two quiet weeks on Twitter, Mayer has gone on a Twitter binge, tweeting about how thrilled she is to take on the role of CEO and thanking Twitter founder Jack Dorsey for his words of congratulations.
Not to be outdone by Google, Yahoo quickly sent Mayer a layette set. Mayer announced her pregnancy hours after the world learned she’d be Yahoo’s new CEO.

Mayer also seems to have discovered Yahoo search for the first time, praising its intelligence. We’ll let her find out on her own that she’s really singing the praises of Microsoft Bing search engine.

STUDY SAYS : 75% of World Has Access to Mobile Phones

The number of mobile phone subscriptions has skyrocketed over the past 12 years. Fewer than 1 billion mobile subscriptions were active in 2000, while there are six billion subscriptions active today. Last year alone, mobile users downloaded more than 30 billion apps.

Additionally, the vast majority of today’s mobile subscriptions (5 billion) are in developing countries, a sign of mobile technology’s importance in countries which haven’t gone through the expensive and difficult process of building land-based communications infrastructure.

“The challenge now is to enable people, businesses, and governments in developing countries to develop their own locally-relevant mobile applications so they can take full advantage of these opportunities.”

“Mobile communications offer major opportunities to advance human and economic development –- from providing basic access to health information to making cash payments, spurring job creation, and stimulating citizen involvement in democratic processes,” said World Bank Vice President for Sustainable Development Rachel Kyte in a statement

YouTube Releases Face-Blurring Tool

YouTube released a new tool Wednesday that blurs faces, to be used in footage requiring anonymity. This new editing feature comes two months after the launch of YouTube’s Human Rights channel
.
To blur faces in a video, you simply go to the Video Enhancements tool and press the “Blur Faces” option. You can preview your video with blurred faces before you press publish and delete the original footage. In the case the editing tool doesn’t catch faces due to poor lighting, angles or obstructions, you can keep your video private and never publish the compromising footage.

Human rights advocacy group Witness, a YouTube human rights channel partner, says there is not yet a video sharing platform that lets you blur faces to protect identities.

Steve Jobs Really Liked Mark Zuckerberg

Steve Jobs was never really described as warm and cuddly, especially when it came to dealing with other business leaders. (Just check out Jobs’s comments about former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt.)
However, the late Apple founder did seem to have an appreciation for Mark Zuckerberg, the 28-year-old founder of Facebook, according to Business Insider.

In a new, long-ranging interview Jobs’s official biographer, Walter Isaacson, states that the reason Apple didn’t “crack the code on social” was largely because of Facebook’s success.

According to the late Apple CEO, as relayed by Isaacson:
"Maybe because Mark (Zuckerberg) did it so well. There’s not a need for a whole lot of social networks and Facebook has got it licked".
Jobs, it seems, admired Zuckerberg’s “intuitive feel.” As such, Jobs felt that Zuckerberg was willing to “do stuff that allows him to be on shifting sands — his willing to cannibalize old things. He felt an odd kinship to Mark,” Isaacson said.

Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 Tablet Now Available

The company has launched IdeaTab S2109, a 9.7-inch slate running Ice Cream Sandwich.

The IdeaTab S2109 looks and feels smaller than a 9.7-inch slate due to its curved edges and 8.9mm-thick. It weighs 1.28 pounds in comparison to the 1.4-pound 2012 iPad. Its a decent tablet that will suffice for most apps and tasks, but with more feature-rich tablet options available in the market like the Asus Transformer Pad TF300 available for less, the IdeaTab S2109 just doesn't click instantly.

The four speaker grilles on the back corners are one of the S2109's few unique features, as that's not a common feature with most of the tablets available. The grilles carry SRS logos and Lenovo touts the IdeaTab S2109's SRS Trumedia audio enhancements.

In comparison to the new iPad's 2,048-by-1,536-pixel retina display and the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700's 1,920-by-1,200-pixel display, the IdeaTab S2109's screen looks pretty bad.

Viacom Channels are Off DirecTV Systems

DirecTV subscribers are losing access to "The Daily Show" and "SpongeBob SquarePants."
DirecTV Group Inc. stopped carrying channels owned by Viacom Inc. because of a contract dispute. They include MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central.

The dispute is over how much DirecTV should pay to carry the Viacom programming. The two companies blamed each other for the shutdown.

Viacom and DirecTV have had an agreement for seven years, which Viacom says meant that it has been paid below-market rates for the programming. DirecTV, meanwhile, says Viacom is asking for too much money.
DirecTV has 20 million U.S. subscribers.

Slow Computer? It May be Your Web Browser

Web browsers like Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox and Chrome are to blame. Determining what resources your browser is using can help you eliminate the resource hogs and return your computer to the performance you once had.

Why Do Certain Browsers Run Slow?

Web browsers can display many pages in separate tabs. And web pages have increased in complexity to run powerful sites such as Gmail or YouTube. Most browsers also support “extensions” or “plugins” that add features like password management, ad blocking and social network notifications.

Increasing the load even more, each tab and every extension uses its own portion of computer memory, often called a “sandbox.” This prevents malware on a web page from accessing other resources in your browser. And if one process crashes, it’s less likely to affect the others.

Finding the Culprits

If your computer is running slowly, first check if the web browser is using more memory or CPU than it should.

In Windows, access the Task Manager by holding down the CTRL and SHIFT keys, and then press the ESC key. In the popup window that appears, click the “Processes” tab. On a Mac, open the Applications folder and then the Utilities folder and click on the Activity Monitor program.

Task Manager and Activity Monitor show running processes, called “Image Name” in Windows and “Process Name” on a Mac. Next to each is the percentage of the total CPU and memory resources it is consuming. Click the header of a column, say, “Memory,” to sort by that info and find the biggest users. You’ll probably see multiple entries — one for each open tab or running extension.

A single web page with video may use 20-30% of your CPU. A few of those, or any one more than 50%, will clearly affect performance. If the memory used by all of your browser processes combined exceeds one-half of your computer’s memory, your browser is likely affecting performance, too.

Often the easiest fix is to simply close the browser window or tab and reopen it again. If the problem continues to occur, you’ll need to determine if a particular page or extension is causing the problem.

Digging Deeper Into Your Browser

The list of processes shows if your browser is consuming too many resources, but it won’t show which web page or extension is guilty. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer and Safari don’t show this information, but Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox do.

Chrome

Chrome provides the most detail. On a Mac or PC, click the wrench icon in the upper right of your toolbar, select “Tools” and choose “Task Manager” to get a list of processes. For example, a tab containing the TechNewsDaily home page would appear as “Tab: Home|TechNewsDaily.com,” or the AdBlock extension would show up as “Extension: AdBlock.” This can make it far easier to pinpoint the problem.

Firefox

In Firefox on a Mac or PC, type “about:memory” in the address bar and press Enter. You’ll see the amount of memory processes are using, though not the CPU usage. The information is more detailed than you’ll need but can still be useful in tracking down a memory-hogging extension or web page.

What to Do

As recommended above, closing your browser and reopening it is often the easiest fix. If the browser is frozen, the Windows Task Manager and Mac Activity Monitor allow you to “end” or “quit” a process. This could cause instability, so it’s good to follow up by closing and reopening the whole browser app.

Where Are Your Mobile Manners?
