BlackBerry Z10 Launched in India at Rs 43,490
BlackBerry on Monday launched its much-awaited smartphone Z10, powered by its latest operating system 'BlackBerry 10', in India at a price of Rs 43,490, taking rivals Apple and Samsung head on in the world's second largest telecom market.
The Canadian smartphone maker has launched its latest model in India nearly a month after the global launch of new operating system 'BlackBerry 10' and two devices Z10 and Q10 on this platform on January 30. With BlackBerry 10, the company has "re-designed, re-engineered and re-invented" BlackBerry to create a new and unique mobile computing experience, he added.
Blackberry Z10 Specifications :
- The new device is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and has 2GB RAM. It comes with 16GB onboard memory, which can be expanded up to 64GB using a microSD card.
- It has 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, a 2MP HD camera in front and its connectivity options include Wi-Fi, 2G, 3G, 4G, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0 and NFC.
- The device supports content in eight Indian languages — Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Devanagiri (Hindi), Gurmukhi (Punjabi), Gujarati, and Bengali — as well as support for third-party solutions for Indian language input.
- The BlackBerry 10-powered phones also boast of faster browser, larger app library and new features like BlackBerry Hub, BlackBerry Flow, BlackBerry Balance and Time Shift.
- The struggling smartphone maker, which re-christened itself as 'BlackBerry' from Research in Motion in January, is betting on the new platform to turn around its fortunes.
The Z10 competes with Apple's iPhone and those based on Google's Android operating system, which have gained popularity across the world. BlackBerry, which faced strong criticism for lack of content on its application store, has also revamped it to take on Android's Play Store and Apple's App Store. The BlackBerry World storefront now includes over 70,000 BlackBerry 10 apps.
- On the features of the new Z10, out of the over 70,000 applications it sports, ranging from Facebook to Twitter to What'sUp to PVR Cinemas (PVR Wallet) to HDFC Mobile Banking, 8,000 have been developed in the country, BlackBerry's software portfolio head Vivek Bharadwaj said.
Recently it was reported that Apple became the second largest smartphone player in the domestic market in value terms after Samsung which controls nearly half the market, while the share of BlackBerry is below top six brands, trailing even Mircomax. However, the domestic market is huge as smartphone penetration is only about 4 percent.
The Z10 will be available in over 2,000 retail outlets across 50 cities in India and has partnered telecom operators like Aircel, Idea Cellular and BSNL for various offers. Samsung Galaxy S IV Confirmed For March 14 Unveiling
At MWC 2013, Samsung has confirmed that
its next generation flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S IV, will be
unveiled at an event on March 14, as recently rumoured. We think that Samsung will also showcase the Note III at the event, though there has been no confirmation on this.
In terms of specifications, the Samsung
Galaxy S IV is expected to have a 5-inch display with a 1920x1080 pixel
resolution. At CES 2013, Samsung unveiled an octa-core Exynos processor.
The new processor may not be on the Samsung Galaxy S IV but it is
expected to power the Note III.
Other expected specs of the Samsung Galaxy S IV include 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear-facing camera and a front
facing camera for video calling. Rumours on the Internet also suggest
that the device will also support the S Pen,
a feature only supported by the Note series of devices. Other rumours
on the Internet suggest that the S IV will also support wireless
charging. A compatible charging dock will be sold separately. This
doesn’t seem like a farfetched feature as it is already implemented in
devices such as the LG Nexus 4 and the Nokia Lumia 920.
Some leaked images suggest that the S IV
will forgo the traditional home button below the display where as
others suggest that it will have the same button placement as the S III.
This however will be settled once the device is unveiled. We have also
seen some sample images that have been clicked from the device leak
online.
Idea Cellular, Aircel and Tata Docomo Announce Bundle Plans for BlackBerry Z10
Telecom operators Idea Cellular, Aircel
and Tata Docomo have announced special bundle plans for the newly
launched BlackBerry Z10. First up is Tata Docomo, the operator is
offering an 'unlimited' 899 plan, which includes unlimited mobile
Internet and unlimited local calls on any network or landline numbers
across the country at a fixed monthly rental of Rs. 899.
At Tata DoCoMo, we have always been pioneers in
bringing innovation to the telecom realm and our customers. We are
delighted that we are partnering with BlackBerry to bring world’s latest
smartphones like the BlackBerry Z10 to India,” Gurinder Singh Sandhu,
Head-Marketing, Tata DoCoMo is quoted as saying.
Aircel hasn't announced
any unlimited plan for the Z10 customers. Aircel is instead offering an
'integrated' plan, which includes 1GB data, 250 Aircel-to-Aircel and 250
minutes voice for three months at a charge of Rs. 153.
Idea Cellular says it will "a smarter
experience along with compelling 3G plans for customers backed by its
gold standard 3G network". However, it didn't reveal further details
about the plans.
Other top telecom operators such as Airtel and Vodafone haven't yet announced their bundle plans for the Z10.
Bharti Airtel to Launch 4G Voice Services Soon
Bharti Airtel has confirmed it will soon
launch voice services on the fourth generation TD-LTE network. Pune
will be the first city to get Airtel's 4G voice services and has already
hired Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy its Circuit Switched FallBack
(CSFB) voice solution in the operator’s live TD-LTE network in the city.
With the move, Airtel will be first telecom operator in the country to
offer combined voice and data plans on 4G network.
“We have the advantage of a pan-India
GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and 3G networks. With the
deployment of cutting edge CSFB (Circuit Switched FallBack)
functionality, we will have the flexibility of using either or both the
networks to support voice services on our TD-LTE (time division
long-term evolution) standard platform,".
The CSFB technology allows the operators
to transfer customers to the GSM platform to make and receive voice
calls and access voicemails using 4G data services.
In the meanwhile, Reliance Industries
(RIL) has also revealed its plans to launch 4G services later this year,
though it didn't give any particular timeframe. Reliance has pan-India
licence and is likely to be a key player in the segment. Analysts believe Airtel's entry in
voice-based 4G services is likely to provide huge boost to the operator,
which is right now the only player in the segment.

BlackBerry 10 will Get Native WhatsApp App in March
WhatsApp has confirmed that the native application of its very popular instant messaging app will arrive on the BB10 platform in March 2013. The news comes via the Twitter account of WhatsApp’s Neeraj Arora, who responded to a couple of user queries by saying “WhatsApp is coming to BB10 sometime in March.” Though no particular date has been confirmed, March is just a week away.
It is very clear that BlackBerry aims at no less than an attempt to fairly command a premium price for its flagship device, the BlackBerry Z10.
But for that to succeed, the application platform still needs to be
worked on. BlackBerry had proudly played up the fact that it had 70,000
apps ready at the time of the BB10 launch, but quite a few popular apps
are still missing in action.
However, the confirmation from WhatsApp
must be a boost for BlackBerry, which was still struggling to explain as
to why Instagram would not be offering a native app for BlackBerry 10.
The popular photo sharing network had specified that there is no native
app in the works, and the ported version is facing some serious
technical hurdles.
WhatsApp, is a cross platform instant messaging app, and is very popular
with a wide demographic of users. The network reported that 10 billion
messages were sent on its network in one day, back in August 2012. The
application is currently available on Android, iOS, Windows Phone,
BlackBerry OS7 and prior, Symbian and even on Nokia S40 Asha phones.
First Mozilla Firefox OS Phones Announced, Along with Partnerships
Mozilla revealed two handsets running
Firefox OS and also announced partnerships with 18 telecom operators
around the world at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The
handsets- the Open and the One Touch Fire will be manufactured by ZTE
and Alcatel respectively and will be launched for European, Latin
American and Asian markets. Both handsets are primarily aimed at the
budget smartphone market and their specs confirm that.
SPECIFICATIONS :
- Powered by a 1GHz Cortex A5 processor
- 256MB RAM.
- 512MB of internal storage and a 2GB microSD card
- Supports Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth
- Alcatel One Touch Fire also has the same specs except that it offers 256MB of RAM.
Huawei and LG are also expected to soon announce their handsets running Firefox OS. Mozilla will partnering with the likes of Deutsche Telekom in Germany, China Unicom in China, Etisalat in the Middle East and Telefónica in South America. Mozilla have also announced that the Firefox OS phones will be first launched in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela followed by other markets.
Samsung Unveils Galaxy Note 8.0
The Korean company Samsung announced on Sunday in Barcelona that the Galaxy Note 8.0 will have an 8-inch screen, putting it very close in size to the Apple's tablet, which launched in November with a 7.9-inch screen. It's not the first time Samsung has made a tablet that's in the Mini's size range: it's very first iPad competitor had a 7-inch screen, and it still makes a tablet of that size, but without a pen.
Samsung will start selling the new tablet in the April to June period, at an as yet undetermined price. It made the announcement ahead of Mobile World Congress, the wireless industry's annual trade show, which starts Monday in Barcelona, Spain.
The Note 8.0 fills a gap in Samsung's line-up of pen-equipped devices between the Galaxy Note II smartphone, with its 5.5-inch screen, and the Galaxy Note 10.1, a full-size tablet. Samsung has made the pen, or more properly the stylus, one of the tools it uses to chip away at Apple's dominance in both tablets and high-end smartphones. Apple doesn't make any devices that work with styluses, preferring to optimize its interfaces for fingers, mice and touchpads.
On Samsung's Note line, the pens can be used to write, highlight and draw. The screens also sense when the mouse hovers over the screen, providing an equivalent to the hovering mouse cursor on the PC. However, few third-party applications have been modified to take full advantage of the pens.

Online Educational Tools to Help Students
It's a competitive world and academia is not without its own challenges. With annual exams around the corner, here are a few online educational tools to help students augment and revise their curriculum, help them find the right career path; and even pick the perfect college.
Merit Nation : www.meritnation.com
Of all the websites mentioned here, Merit Nation has the most exhaustive collection of online academic content. It caters to all the grades across CBSE/ISC, ICSE and state boards of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Additionally, it also covers junior college for Science, Commerce and Humanities, and even has material for the IIT-JEE and NEET examinations.
Sign up at the site, and you are provided with a fairly large amount of free content. Subjects are listed on the left as icons, each with four sections: Study, Test, Revise and Ask & Answer.
The 'Study' section is formatted like a text book, with lots of text and diagrams; but it should be noted that several lessons also come with an additional video made by a teacher. The Test and Revise sections will let you assess how much you have learnt. The free material here is limited though.
Whatever course you are in, you can pay to upgrade to a basic or all-inclusive online course, which gives you everything you'd need. For school and junior college, the discounted price as of writing is 3,800 per grade. IIT-JEE courses range from 5,999 to 15,999, while NEET rates are between 4,999 and 11,999.
iPerform : iperform.classteacher.com
For those enrolled in a CBSE school, iPerform is a great way to augment classroom learning. Unfortunately, the site doesn't cater to other boards of education. Sign up for a free account for a few lessons that serve as a preview of the paid site; to unlock the full curriculum for any one grade, it costs 4,000 annually.
The site itself is divided into three parts: Learning Zone, e-Testing Zone and Interactive Zone. The Learning Zone is where all the lessons are imparted. Choose a subject (English, History, Physics, Maths, etc) and the lesson in it that you want to learn. Instead of a standard textbook format, iPerform has turned the chapters into slideshows, annotating each lesson with images. The e-Testing Zone offers three modes: revise, exercise or smart assessment. iPerform will analyze the student's performance and track progress, along with other parameters such as the student's focus, learning and present it all in the Performance Report tab.
India College Search : www.indiacollegesearch.com
India College Search is the only resource you will need to make up your mind. Fantastically designed, it streamlines the whole process. First, choose the field - engineering, management, medical, law, architecture, computers, hotel management and pharmacy.
Next, pick the course (for example, B Tech/BE or M Tech/ME) and the geographic location, where you can choose from multiple choices between states and cities. Hit 'Search' and you're ready to go. The results are a list of colleges with basic information such as whether it's a public or private institution, course duration, annual fees, and small icons to denote facilities such as hostel, gym, library, laboratory, auditorium, etc.
Once you know what you want, click that college and you will be taken to its landing page, which has photos, location map, overview and description, faculty, events, admission procedure, eligibility, and recent cut-offs. If you like what you see, hit the 'Add to Shortlist' button - a list you can access through your profile. India College Search claims to have over 7,000 colleges listed, of which 1,187 accept applications via the website.
Mera Career Guide : www.meracareerguide.com
If you already know what career path you are interested in, try searching for it; otherwise, go through the list of 1,374 topics to see something that catches your fancy. You'll be taken to a Q&A forum with questions from other students, and which have been answered by career counsellors, letting you learn a bit more about the subject.
The 'psychometric assessments' will let you measure your aptitude and fine-tune your interests. Choose your current academic level or go in for the all-age 'ideal career test'. Once you are done, Mera Career Guide will show you a preview of the full report that displays the education stream that's least recommended for you. For the complete report, you will have to pay 500 to access information on the best course for you, supplemented with a graph of your interests and aptitudes, your strengths and weaknesses, etc.
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATORS:
Coursera: Regarded as the best website for online education, four of Coursera's courses have been deemed worthy of college credit. The material, spanning across subjects such as humanities, medicine, mathematics, social sciences, business, etc, are all designed by world-class professors. Learn at your own pace, test your knowledge and reinforce concepts with exercises.
www.coursera.org
Khan Academy: With almost 4,000 videos that will teach you about any subject you want to learn, the sheer number of topics covered here is Khan Academy's biggest selling point - and hey, it's all free. It has gotten plaudits from education experts across the world. Students are advised to make good use of the dashboard feature that lets them track their academic progress. www.khanacademy.org
TED-Ed I TED: The idea sharing platform, has an offshoot dedicated to education that is choc-a-block full of videos to help in learning. TED-Ed is not really academic or adhering to curriculum. The videos are meant to augment what you learn in a classroom. The best part is that each video comes with links to dig deeper into the topic, as well as multiple choice and short answer questions. ed.ted.com
MIT Open CourseWare: The world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has put a large amount of its under-graduate and graduate courseware online for anyone in the world to use, from lecture notes to full videos of classes. ocw.mit.edu
YouTube Edu: From Khan Academy to Stanford University, most online academic providers use YouTube as a partner; and the video-sharing service has put them all together under one roof, hosting over 7,00,000 highquality educational videos. YouTube Edu has short lessons from top teachers across the world, full courses, and videos from global thought-leaders. And yup, it's all free. www.youtube.com/education
Teachers go through these websites to support what they teach, but in no way can these replace the teaching that takes place in classrooms. None of these keep up with new teaching methods, especially since the CBSE board introduces many innovative methods regularly.

Yahoo India MD Arun Tadanki to Quit
Arun Tadanki, managing director of Yahoo India & Southeast Asia, will leave Yahoo in July. He had joined Yahoo India as MD in 2009.
Tadanki's exit comes at a time when Yahoo is doing a major makeover under its latest CEO, Marissa Mayer, a Google veteran who took over in July last year. A statement from Yahoo quoted Tadanki as saying that he had worked for 11 years in CEO roles for Apac/ emerging markets regions at multinational internet companies, and he was looking forward to playing a very different role within the internet ecosystem, beyond this region. No further details were provided about his plans, or who would replace him at Yahoo. The gain was marginal though, and Yahoo still is not keeping pace with the overall growth of the internet ad market. Mayer is Yahoo's fifth permanent or interim CEO since 2008.
A Yahoo spokesperson said about Takanki: "Under Arun's leadership, Yahoo India has seen impressive growth both in terms of users and advertising, outpacing the market. During the last 3 years, Arun also secured strong partnerships that drove 6-fold growth in Yahoo's mobile users in India. He led the formation of the editorial operation, delivering 15-fold traffic growth in Yahoo India's content properties. He played a key role in localizing the Yahoo experience with extensive local content partnerships across categories such as cricket, Bollywood, entertainment & news, in English and six local languages."
Prior to Yahoo, Tadanki was president of Monster.com's Apac & Middle East operations for seven years. He became part of Monster in April 2002 when it acquired JobsAhead.com, where he was head of sales and marketing. Prior to this, he worked as head of the culinary business at Nestle India, where he spent eight years. He holds an MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad and an engineering degree from IIT-Madras.
Yahoo Collaborates with Facebook for Website Revamp
Yahoo has introduced a new newsfeed feature with infinite scroll similar to that on Facebook and Twitter
which will allow users to log in through their Facebook IDs and be able
to access information about their friends varying from articles to
birthdays, videos, etc.
This the biggest product revamp taken by CEO Marissa Mayer since she took over the ailing company last year. Yahoo
has been the most visited site but its revenues have declined in recent
years. It has lost its internet space to competitors like Google as well as Facebook.
The major changes that will be coming
out in the next few weeks will include mobile applications for
smartphones as well as tablets. This makeover follows the new updated
version of Yahoo mail that was introduced in December 2012. It is said
that with this move Yahoo will strength its ties with Facebook to
compete against Google for Web users' attention. However it still
remains to be seen whether the revamp will actually bring back Yahoo's
Internet audience.
Yahoo has given a forecast for a modest
increase in revenues for the year but it is still not much compared to
the growth of its competitors like Google and Facebook which have the
majority of the market share. Yahoo will be rolling out the new look for
US users over the next few days though nothing has been said about its
global rollout plans yet.
MTS to Shutdown Operations in 10 Circles, Impacting 22 lakh Customers
Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL), which operates under the brand name MTS, has announced that it will be participating
in the spectrum auction scheduled next month. In the meantime MTS will
be closing its operations in 10 service areas after a 30 day period.
MTS will be shutting down its operations
in the following circles - Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra
Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, North East
and Punjab. It has started the process of informing its users to avoid
any inconvenience. The customers have been gives a 30 day window in
which they can either switch to a different telecom operator as well as
exhaust their balance with MTS.
The MTS operation shut down in 10
circles will impact more than 22 lakh customers. The supreme court in an
order on February 15, 2013 has asked telecom companies to close their
operations if their licenses were cancelled or they were not able to win
or participate in November 2012 spectrum auction. MTS has stated that
the order has not impacted its business, and it is still waiting for an
order from the apex court on the matter.
Google Releases a Faster Drive Version 1.1.592.10 For Android 3.0+
Google has not elaborated on the Drive
update but has stated that users will have a more efficient and faster
experience while using the application. Google Drive
helps you store data, documents, pictures, etc. with ease and with the
updated version 1.1.592.10 now you can share these files, etc much more
efficiently.
Google has added two new features that
can be downloaded directly from the Google Play store (7.2 MB)
absolutely free. The app ensures performance improvements as well as
fixes bugs in Google Drive.
- The first feature allows you to stream
video files with ease on Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) or higher. This is very
useful for users who like to share files in their work place or with
friends. Now you can stream all your documents, videos, etc directly
from your Google Drive and view it on your Android Device.
- The second new feature that has been
added is the pinch-to-zoom support in the presentation viewer. This tool
is helpful for users who have Android devices with small screens. Now
you can see tiny details on charts with just a touch of your finger
without having to go through complicated menus, tools, etc.
Installing Ubuntu Mobile OS on Nexus Devices: Guide
Canonical has just released
their long awaited Ubuntu Mobile OS for phones and tablets, but it is
currently not in its finished state. If you’re itching to flash your
shiny Nexus phone or tablet with this early developer build, there are a
number of things that you must keep in mind before you begin the
process of giving your device a new soul.
Compatibility >>
Currently, the “Touch Developer Preview for Ubuntu” is only compatible with Google Nexus devices, but each device must be running a specific version of the firmware. Here is a neat little tablet that shows the various devices and the required firmware.
Currently, the “Touch Developer Preview for Ubuntu” is only compatible with Google Nexus devices, but each device must be running a specific version of the firmware. Here is a neat little tablet that shows the various devices and the required firmware.

If you’re wondering how you can find out
which version of the firmware your phone/tablet is running, just go to
the Settings tab and click on “System”. The “Device” section should read
one of the titles under the “Codename” section of the above table.
Along with that, the “Product” should read one of those listed under the
“Factory Firmware from Google.” If your phone is running a version not
listed above, and you feel pretty confident about tinkering with its
innards, you can download the compatible firmware for your device from Google’s Developer’s page.
To start with, the Touch Developer Preview for Ubuntu supports voice
calls and SMS exchange only over GSM networks. So if you have a Nexus
phone from a CDMA provider like Verizon or Sprint, the build will not
work on your device. This is because currently, radios like CDMA, LTE
and 2G (only) radios are not supported. In fact, data over cellular
network isn’t supported at all and you must be connected to a Wi-Fi
network to get your daily fix of internet goodness. The OS currently
does not support the MMS service either. Besides the basic functionality
that is missing in the build, importing contacts is not as simple as
syncing with Google Contacts. You will either have to re-enter all your
contacts manually, or employ a CSV file. Therefore, we recommend getting
all your contacts in one place in a CSV file for importing later.
Device Specific Issues >>
Universal issues aside, the Developer build also comes with its fair share of device specific issues which are listed below:
Nexus Galaxy >> 802.11a (i.e. 5GHz) is currently not working.
Nexus 4 >> In rare circumstances, the Nexus 4 may
get into a state where it may not boot at all after the battery is
drained (even into recovery). If this happens, the only way to restore
it is to disassemble the back of the phone and unplug/plug the battery
connector.
Nexus 10 >> Taking pictures with the camera
application causes an issue with audio. The volume indicator and volume
keys will not work to control the sound until reboot. People lens sometimes comes up empty after first flashing the device and booting. Rebooting fixes the issue.
Nexus 7
· Runs in portrait mode by default. (no side stage)
· Camera, video decoding and audio output do not function.
· Greeter screen is misaligned.
· No multi-user login.
Those are some pretty big bugs if you
ask us. We’d hate for our Google Nexus 4 to get stuck with in a
non-booting state, wouldn’t you?
What to Expect After Flashing >> We’ve talked enough about all that’s missing in this early preview
build of Ubuntu’s Mobile OS, so let’s look at what does work. For
starters, you can make and receive calls, with the same luxury being
afforded to SMS. At least your phone will be able to serve its primary
function of a communication device. It will support networking via
Wi-Fi, which shouldn’t be an issue seeing as how there are Wi-Fi
hotspots almost everywhere.
Facebook Hackers Also Attacked Apple
Apple has revealed that it was also the victim of the same hackers that recently attacked Facebook.
In a statement to The Loop, Apple has said that hackers infected
systems being used by Apple employees with malware using an exploit in
the Java plug-in for browsers. Ars Technica reports that the infection
originated from the same source in both Facebook and Apple's case- an
iPhone developer forum called iphonedevsdk.com.
Sources close to Reuters have revealed
that the recent Twitter hack was also a part of the same cybercrime
campaign. Apple has said that it has shipped a Java malware detection
tool for Mac OS X users. Like Facebook, Apple has also claimed that even
though the hackers did manage to successfully infect computers within
the company, no user data or critical data had been found to be at risk.
It remains to be seen how Oracle will deal with these numerous security
exploits that have popped up in its Java platform. Apple has already
been shipping computers without Java for a while and also recently
blocked Java entirely from running on its Safari browser until Oracle
was forced to release a hasty update. The social networking giant said that after being informed, Oracle (the
company behind Java) rushed out a patch that fixed the vulnerability.
Earlier this month, Twitter also revealed that hackers had made off with data of 2,50,000 users leading the micro-blogging service to introduce more stringent security measures including a two-step authentication system.
Sony Launches Next-Generation PlayStation 4 Game Console
The PS4 has been announced by Sony! At long last we've had our first look at the new PlayStation and so far it looks very... next-geny. With TechRadar in attendance at the event on the 20th Feb, Sony revealed some tantalising details about the hardware specs, along with some amazing software features that the new console will have.
PS4: Hardware Specifications
AMD, as we guessed all along, is coursing through this new system's veins.Post-event, Sony revealed the system runs on a single-chip custom processor and utilizes eight x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU cores, with a next-gen AMD Radeon based graphics engine powering the way.
The "highly enhanced PC GPU" packs 18 GCN units - that may sound a like a lot of techy mumbo jumbo but what it essentially means is that the GPU packs 18 processing clusters, each packing up to 64 cores. That provides a lot of parallel processing power, and will thus handle the majority of the PS4's grunt work. It hits 1.84 TFLOPS of processing mojo. Sony announced at the NYC event that the console will use GPU compute features to take advantage of this components raw power - it'll be used for general computation tasks as well as building graphics.
Memory
The PS4 will ship packing 8GB of GDDR5 memory. That's some super-fast stuff right there and should enable lightning fast performance. Indeed, Sony has revealed that you will be able to power down the PS4 mid-game and then switch it on again in seconds and pick up right where you left off. That's the sort of loading power that this memory enables.
Other Specifications
We're also looking at Blu-ray disk support plus good ol' DVD, plus HDMI output support as well as Analog-AV out and an optical digital output.
Despite the PS4's unveiling, and stiff competition from mobile devices, Sony is still actively marketing the Playstation 3. The company last week released the console in two different colours.
The new limited edition Garnet Red and Azurite Blue 500GB 'super-slim' units seem to represent one last push of their current generation hardware.

Apple TV Now Officially Available in India for Rs. 7,900
Apple has officially launched the Apple
TV in India for Rs. 7,900, almost a year after it was originally
launched in the U.S. Apple has updated its India website accordingly and you can find the Apple TV listed under the iPod section of the site.
The Apple TV, for the uninitiated, is a
media streamer that lets you stream and share content from your Apple
devices and from iTunes to your HDTV. The device needs to be connected
to your HDTV through HDMI, while it can pull content from other Apple
devices over a wireless or a wired network. Apart from content you
already own, you can also use the Apple TV to purchase content from the
Indian iTunes store and view it on your TV.
Apple TV also provides access to a limited section of streaming content outside of the iTunes store
but since most of the content is around Baseball and international
finance, it's not really something that will become really popular.
Apart from music and videos, you can also use the Apple TV to view
photos from your iPhone or iPad or those hosted on iCloud, mirror
content (like games) from your iPhone/iPod or iPad to your TV using
AirPlay and watch videos from sites like YouTube and Vimeo.
YouTube Playback Broken on BlackBerry OS 7 and OS 7.1 Devices
Many BlackBerry smartphone users running
BlackBerry OS 7 and OS 7.1 have been complaining of issues with the
YouTube app on their device. The service allows them to search for
videos, but can no longer play back any video within the application. It
was earlier feared that this issue affects all BlackBerry smartphones,
but the latest information narrows it down to the phones running on OS 7
and OS 7.1.
Crackberry has reported that the issue isn’t originating from BlackBerry’s end, leading to the belief that YouTube
has some issue at its side. No comment yet, from both Google and
YouTube, on this issue. The first option is to download the Opera mobile browser from BlackBerry
World, and access YouTube from there. The second option is slightly
lengthy - Go to a Youtube video and click on the arrow icon on the top
right side of the video that allows you to share the video. From within
the options list, select ‘e-mail the link’ and send it to your mail. You
can access the videos from within your email.
The phones running OS older than OS 7 and the newer BB10 phones do not
face this issue. We expect a clarification from BlackBerry or YouTube
fairly soon, because this silence will only alienate more users,
something that BlackBerry cannot afford, as it intends to convince
existing users to upgrade to BB10.
Hackers Attack Facebook Using Java Flaw
Facebook has revealed that it was the
victim of a “sophisticated attack” that led to malware being installed
on employees' computers. A Facebook security post reveals that the
hackers exploited a previously undetected flaw in Java's built-in
security mechanism to infect the developer site, which in turn infected
the computers of the Facebook employees.
The Facebook post states that it has
reported the matter to Oracle (the company behind Java) and that a
security patch has already been issued to resolve the vulnerability.
Facebook claims that it has found no evidence to suggest that any data
pertaining to Facebook users has been compromised and reveals that it
wasn't the only company to suffer from the attack.
Java has suffered the brunt of hacker
attacks in recent weeks resulting in many companies either recommending
users to turn off Java plug-ins in their browsers or outright banning Java plug-ins from working on browsers. Oracle was only able to get Apple to unblock Java from working on Safari after releasing multiple security updates
within the span of a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, Java still remains
an important component in many web applications and will undoubtedly
remain the target of hackers in the future.

Android 4.2.2 Rolls Out with New Toggles, Download Notifications and Sounds
The next update of the Android OS is out, going up to version number 4.2.2, while retaining the “Jelly Bean” moniker. Google has been slowly pushing out updates for their Jelly Bean OS, but their own Nexus phones are the only ones to get these updates instantly and we happen to have one in our labs.
For starters, once you’ve updated to Android 4.2.2, you will find that your downloads from the Play store will display an ETA. Computer users have had this functionality for a while now, so seeing it make it into a mobile OS is nice. We didn’t appreciate the mystery surrounding the time to complete a particular download.
Second change in the new OS is a tweak to the Quick Settings option. Long pressing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth now toggles them in the Quick Settings bar in the notifications instead of taking you to a settings page. This could of course be a little confusing, given that the Airplane Mode is still a single press toggle. So in total, some settings end up being single press toggles (airplane mode only), some are long press toggles and some options will still take you to the settings page.
Lastly, Google’s introduced a pair of new sounds, one for wireless charging and another for when the battery is low. Earlier, if the phone was being charged wirelessly, it did not make any audible notification, but 4.2.2 rectifies that. The sound for “low battery” has also been changed, which might come as a relief to some who found the older sound somewhat questionable.
Hackers Bring Down IIPM Website
Anonymous, a hacker collective, attacked the website of Indian Institute of Planning and Management -- www.iipm.in -- on Saturday morning, forcing it offline.
"#TangoDown iipm.in #IIPMScam. Reason: Got court order to block URLs criticizing them including the UGC (Govt Body) notice," noted a tweet made from @opindia_revenge, a Twitter account used by Indian hackers who claimed to be part of Anonymous. The hackers claimed they brought down 16 websites belonging to IIPM.
The attack on www.iipm.in left www.iipm.edu crippled as this website internally links to the content hosted on www.iipm.in. After the attack, the website was offline for nearly nine hours.
On Thursday the department of telecommunications had asked internet service providers (ISPs) to block 78 URLs (web addresses), of which 73 were linked to articles and blogs about the IIPM and its director, Arindam Chaudhuri. The directive was issued after an order by a Gwalior district court. The list of blocked URLs included a public notice of July 2012 issued by the University Grants Commission saying that "IIPM is not a university within the meaning of section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956".
The web users also shared the text of blocked articles and created new URLs to host them. They talked about 'The Streisand Effect', a web phenomenon which notes that harder someone tries to suppress information on the web, the faster it spreads. On Twitter, UGC and IIMP were among the topics that trended in India on Saturday.
Apple iOS 6.1 Security Loophole Allows Lockscreen Bypass, Apple Promises Fix
A recent development has revealed that the lockscreen on iOS 6.1 can be easily bypassed with a few simple presses. This new exploit, discovered by a user and widely described in a YouTube video,
does not require any form of software or access to a computer: indeed,
all it needs is the crucial vulnerability allegedly already present on iOS 6.1,
affecting the Phone app on the iPhone.
The process itself is quite
cumbersome, yet it boils down to a few simple steps. As an iPhone owner,
we’re not going to get into the specifics of how you can violate
someone’s privacy, but in case you are locked out of your iPhone, a
quick Google search should turn up the video fairly easily. The bypassing of the lockscreen can be seen as a major debacle for Apple, and even more so for iOS 6.1 given that it also broke 3G connectivity for some iPhone 4S users in Europe.
The company last night responded to the
lockscreen loophole reports, saying: “We are aware of this issue, and
will deliver a fix in a future software update.”
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time
such a loophole has been found on an iOS device. iOS 4.1 was plagued
with the same issue and last year, a similar exploit surfaced which
utilized the camera access feature on the lockscreen.
Adobe Releases Source Code For Original Version of Photoshop
After 23 years of its launch, Adobe has finally released the source code for the original version of Photoshop. As unbelievable as it may sound, it’s true. The only catch is that this version of Photoshop was released in 1990 and was the first ever Photoshop to see the light of the day.
The Computer History Museum further announced that all the 128,000 lines of code, except the MacApp applications library for the Photoshop Version 1.0.1 are available for download. The release contains 179 files in a zipped folder, comprising of mostly uncommented but well-structured lines of code. Out of the entire collection, about 75% of the code is in Pascal and 15% is in 68000 assembler language.
The major part of the original source code was written by Thomas Knoll (Photoshop co-founder). The aim of the first version of Photoshop was personal use but later on the product went on to be a commercial success and is now one of the most widely used graphics editing software in the world. You can download the Photoshop version 1.0.1 source code and user guides from here and read its license agreement here.
Google Updates Search App for Android, Introduces Google Now Widget
Google has rolled out an update to its
Search app for Android (for versions 4.1 and higher) that brings in
various new features such as support for movie passes from Fandango,
rating from Rotten Tomatoes. It also introduced the Google Now widget,
which can be used on the homescreen or lockscreen.
Interestingly, a recent leak on the
Google support page, taken down shortly, had hinted at a widget which
looked very minimalist in its appearance and clubbed together relevant
cards. It had references to the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Galaxy Nexus.
The Search app update brings real estate listings from Zillow when in
the market for a home, a music button when a song is playing in voice
mode (US only) and support for US college sports. Users can download the
updated Search app from the Google Play store.
50% of Smartphone Users in India are Under the Age of 25 : Nielsen Survey
Nielsen has released the findings of the Indian Smartphone User study conducted late last year, and the numbers thrown up are very interesting. The country currently has 900 million mobile phones in use, out of which 40 million are smartphones. Deeper into those numbers, the survey reveals that 50% of those 40 million smartphones are with people under the age of 25.
“Nielsen Informate Mobile Insights, an alliance between Nielsen and Informate Mobile Intelligence, polled more than 10,000 consumers in September and October 2012 across 46 cities in India to assess overall usage and device preferences”
In fact, 93% smartphone owners own only one smartphone. The study also found that smartphone users in India overwhelmingly prefer smartphones on the Android operating system. One of the reasons for this is the availability of Android handsets across various price points, starting Rs. 5,000 onwards Only half of the smartphone users polled did have an active data connection. Interestingly, the youth are leading the growth here as well, with more than half of all data users being younger than 25 years. Tablets is one device category that still has a long way to go before it catches the fancy of the consumers. Also, this highlights a huge opportunity for tablet makers, ready to be tapped. Of all the users polled and numbers captured by the survey, only 3% said they owned a tablet.
70 Percent of Indian YouTube Users Below Age of 35: Google
According to an online survey conducted
by Google, about two-thirds of the YouTube viewers in India are below
the age of 35 years, while 72 percent have a college degree or higher.
Moreover, one-third of viewers in the country access videos on their
mobile phones and spend more than 48 hours a month on YouTube, matching
the global trajectory, says the survey.
Google's
survey was conducted on more than 2,000 Indian YouTube viewers. With
the survey, Google has also coined a new section of viewers called
'Generation C', which is a young and tech-savvy group of people, who
are connected with the latest in content and culture.
The Generation C is deeply engaged with the online videos, spends hours
of watching, creating and uploading. “Generation C switches between
devices 27 times a day, and Indian users watch nearly 30 per cent of
their YouTube videos on mobile. Smartphone owners spend one quarter of
their YouTube time on mobile, while tablet owners spend about 20
percent,” says Google in its study.
Google's insights into India's users on YouTube clearly shows the
growing popularity of the social video networking site in the country.
The credit for YouTube's growth should be also given to the localised
offerings by the search engine giant. Last year, Google updated its TV Shows page for the Indian viewers,
adding more than 19,000 full episodes of as many as 300 programmes in
six different languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali,
Gujarati and Punjabi.
Intel Set to Launch Internet TV Service This Year
Intel has confirmed that the company
will be launching an Internet TV service sometime this year. The
announcement was made at the All Things Digital’s “Dive Into Media”
conference.
The company is said to be in negotiations with content partners at the moment. What is confirmed though is that Intel
will ask users to buy a set-top box, which will stream live TV and
movies. "We have been working for (the past) year to set up Intel media,
a new group focused on developing an Internet platform," Huggers said.
"My kids may watch programming geared towards them, and I'll watch
programming geared towards me," Huggers said, according to AllThingsD.
"If there's a way to distinguish who is watching what, advertisers can
then target ads at the proper parties."
Reports of Intel working on a streaming
service were first covered by the Wall Street Journal in March 2012.
But, it will be interesting to see how Intel works around certain
issues. The first being to convince users to but a separate set top box
for this service. The second is licensing issues, and the geographical
restrictions in the way of global play. The third is how Intel gets
around the bandwidth caps that ISPs tend to put on connections,
globally.
