Happy 15th Birthday, Google Search ! ! !

Everyone’s favorite search engine and benevolent overlord turned 15 years old today. Sort of.
Then-Standford-Ph.D-students Larry Page and Sergey Brin had been working on what would become Google as early as January 1996. They registered the domain name on Sept. 15, 1997, and incorporated the company on Sept. 4, 1998. It “was established” on Sept. 7, 1998 according to Search Engine Watch. And almost all of those dates have been celebrated as the company’s birthday at one point or another.

Fifteen years ago, the internet took perhaps it’s biggest leap forward since the hyperlink. That first advancement created the web, and Google helped make sense of it all, making searches a far more precise and intuitive process.

In their further pursuits to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” the company has revolutionized e-mail, bought YouTube- and yes, maybe sold out its users privacy while generating massive profits for itself with AdWords.
The search engine giant has featured a playful doodle by depicting the popular Mexican birthday game pinata(a container made of papier-mache or cloth filled with candies or small toys).

The letters of Google logo are depicted as guests of the birthday party except the 4th letter 'g'.  The 4th letter 'g' of the logo is blindfolded and it hits the swinging pinata with a stick. Users are given 10 chances to hit the swinging pinata with the stick by pressing the spacebar on their computer keyboards to win candies and earn points. A cake is also displayed in the doodle with two candles '1' and '5' on it.

Google has also announced that it had updated its search engine algorithm with the aim to deliver better search results to its users.

Facebook Finally Lets You Edit Posts

Facebook introduced the ability to edit status updates starting Thursday. The latest update for the Android Facebook app adds the ability to "edit your posts and comments and tap to see all your changes." However, the editing has not been enabled on any of the Android devices we experimented with.

The editing feature will roll out to Facebook users on the web and Android devices over the next day, Facebook confirmed to Mashable. The editing feature is not included in the latest iOS app, but will likely get pushed out in the next update. Users will see the option to "Edit Post" when they click on the drop-down arrow in the top-right corner of a post.

Editing posts was potentially dicey territory for Facebook, since the it brings the danger of a bait-and-switch with followers. A user could conceivably write, "Who likes ice cream?" and get hundreds of Likes and affirming comments, then edit the post to read, "Who wants to beat up some cats?"
Facebook addresses this issue by marking the post as edited and letting users access the history of any edited post with a click. Google+, which has let users edit posts for some time, works in a similar fashion.

Facebook has been slowly granting users more editing capabilities over their content. Users can edit photo captions (that is, status updates with a photo attached) and the ability to edit comments arrived a few months ago.

YouTube Moves Away From Anonymous Comments, Towards Google+

Google has announced that YouTube comments will start being powered by Google+ from this week onwards. This means that in order to comment on a YouTube video, you will have to own a Google+ account. One of the main reasons for moving to Google+ is YouTube’s long desire to put faces to names when it comes to commenters, in order to reduce the amount of spam and vicious comments that plague YouTube comments and also to provide video creators a recognizable audience to reach out to.

The shift to Google+ comments isn’t just to cull offensive comments but also, to organize the thousands of comments that can be found on popular videos. This is not really helpful to anyone except for perhaps the commenter himself and may be to the person he is addressing. Under the new Google+ system, comments will be arranged as per the people who are in your circles, the video’s creators and what Google calls “popular personalities”. Also, comments will be threaded so that all replies can be collapsed into the main comment itself, which will vastly reduce the clutter in the comments section and will also make it easier to follow conversations. Video creators and commenters can also allow their comments on a YouTube video shared on Google+, to show up in the comments on the main YouTube site.

Microsoft Announced Surface Pro 2

Microsoft Corp. on Monday announced that the Microsoft Surface family of tablets is growing. Two new Surface models — Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 — along with an expanded portfolio of new Surface accessories, will be available at Microsoft retail stores, http://www.MicrosoftStore.com and select third-party retailers and commercial resellers in 22 initial markets, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States on Oct. 22 and China in early November. Additional markets will be announced in the coming months.

Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 each benefit from significant updates, including improvements to processing power and battery life, to display and camera resolution, and to the Kickstand, now with dual angles, so it’s more comfortable for you to use your Surface on your lap or at your desk. Enhancements in Windows RT 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro make Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 even more powerful and customizable.

The Surface Pro 2 will be powered by the next generation Intel Haswell CPU which promises more power with less power consumption. In fact, Microsoft claims that the Surface Pro 2 has a 75 percent longer battery life than its predecessor.  Microsoft showed off a new display that it claims has 50 percent more color accuracy than its predecessor. It’s still a 1920×1080 display, though, so you won’t be seeing any ridiculous retina display-like resolutions from the Surface Pro 2. Interestingly enough, however, Microsoft showed off a new PC dock accessory for the Surface Pro 2 that allows the tablet to output to a monitor for those wanting to work in a more professional environment. In this mode, the Surface Pro 2 can output at resolutions up to 4K, or 3840×2160. To showcase this, Microsoft showed off the Surface Pro 2 editing 4K video footage.

Microsoft also announced some new type covers for its latest tablet. The original touch and type covers are now thinner, and even backlit to help out in darkened environments. Microsoft also announced the Power Type Cover – a type cover with a built-in battery that promises to double the Surface Pro 2′s battery life. A starting price of $899 is not bad for a PC, and Microsoft has made it clear that the Surface Pro 2 is a PC. Unfortunately for Microsoft, consumers still see it as a tablet and expect tablet pricing.

Blackberry in $4.7 Billion Takeover Deal With Fairfax

Smartphone maker BlackBerry(BB.TO) has agreed to go private in a $4.7 billion deal led by its biggest shareholder, allowing the on-the-go email pioneer to regroup away from public scrutiny after years of falling fortunes and slumping market share. The $9 a share tentative offer, from a consortium led by property and casualty insurer Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd(FFH.TO), will set a floor for any counteroffers that might emerge for Blackberry, which has been on the block since August.
As an investor, Fairfax Chief Executive Prem Watsa is often described as the Canadian Warren Buffett because he also takes the long view.

Blackberry shares peaked above $148 in June 2008 when the company's devices were still the top choice for bankers, politicians and lawyers. The stock, halted pending the announcement on Monday, closed below the offer price on Nasdaq, at $8.82, indicating the market's lack of faith that other bids would emerge.

BlackBerry, based in Waterloo, Ontario, once dominated the market for secure on-your-hip email. But it introduced consumer-friendly touchscreen smartphones only after it lost the lead to Apple Inc's(AAPL.O) iPhone and devices using Google Inc's(GOOG.O) Android operating system.
BlackBerry has until November 4 to seek superior offers, which the Fairfax group has the right to match. The group is seeking financing from Bank of America Merrill Lynch and BMO Capital Markets to complete the deal and has until that November 4 deadline to conduct its due diligence.

German Hacking Group Claims to Hack iPhone's TouchID

A group of German hackers, the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) have claimed that just within two days of the iPhone 5S hitting the hands of the lucky few who pre-ordered it, they have managed to hack the fingerprint scanner on the device. The group, one of the oldest of its kind in existence and the most prominent, said they lifted the fingerprint off the phone’s surface by taking a photo of it. They have detailed the entire process in a post on their site and also showed off a video with the hack being conducted.

The reason the fingerprint scanner on the iPhone 5S is tricky to hack is because it scans the living layer of tissue underneath the skin, as a two-factor way of ensuring that the person unlocking the phone is the owner. While the ridges and valleys of the fingerprint provide the authentication, the living layer of tissue is a way of ensuring that people don't run around cutting off the thumbs of iPhone owners to gain access to the phone.

Apple's sensor has just a higher resolution compared to the sensors so far. So we only needed to ramp up the resolution of our fake", said the hacker with the nickname Starbug, who performed the critical experiments that led to the successful circumvention of the fingerprint locking.

The descender on the ‘g’ has been slightly modified to curve upward in a friendlier manner and the cut on the top of the ‘b’ mirrors the angle on the cut of the ‘t’ in our Microsoft logo. The kerning pairs of the ‘i’ and the ‘n’ are exactly the same as the ‘i’ and the ‘n’ in the Windows wordmark. Apple’s iOS 7 Update Now Available

Apple iOS 6.1 and 6.12 both saw very fast adoption rates from users in U.S. and Canada, according to Chitika, and generally speaking, Apple iOS device owners switch over to the newest OS version pretty quickly, thanks in part to Apple’s update mechanism which pushes new software over-the-air to all devices at the same time, regardless of carrier.

iOS 7 is different because of how much it changes everything. The look of the OS is entirely new, from the ground up, and there are also many differences when it comes to how features work and what’s involved in navigating around your device.

As I noted in my review, iOS 7 is definitely going to take some getting used to, even if the changes it implements are mostly very much for the better. To get started with your own update, check the “General > Software Update” section in your iOS Settings for over-the-air, or plug into a computer with iTunes installed to get it wired. Apple could be facing lots of demand, so don’t be surprised if it takes a little while to find and download the update. The best advice is to just keep trying if you encounter errors.

Design

Circles enter the design language, along with visuals that look nearly transparent, like a pane of glass. There's not much in the way of customization or themes, but your passcode and phone dialing screens take on the color of your background, which successfully ties the look together. The most important part of any deep design work is that it feel smooth and connected from screen to screen, and after some time spent with iOS 7, I do think it delivers an elegant overall experience.

Control Center and Notifications

In iOS 7, you can swipe up from the bottom of the display to bring up quick-access tools, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth access, brightness, Airplane mode, and music controls. Control Center also integrates a small flashlight tool, signaling the death of so many third-party flashlight apps, but you also have quick access to setting an alarm or opening the calculator or camera.
In the Notifications pull-down menu, three tabs show you all your alerts, the calls and messages you've missed, and a new "today" pane that tracks what you have scheduled for the day. It's a small but useful expansion of the current notifications pull-down.
Safari browser & App World

In addition to iOS 7's Safari overhaul, the biggest change to the browser is a unified search and URL field. The fact that past versions kept the two separate for some time was a usability thorn in our side. The long overdue update that combines them into one is therefore both gratifying and enraging, since it was such a small tweak that every other mobile OS (and desktop Web browser) has been taking advantage of for years.

AirDrop
AirDrop works by creating local ad hoc networks among nearby users. So if you want to share a photo, you'll hit the share button, and automatically see others around you who are also on iOS 7 (and who have the feature turned on). From there you just tap a friend's picture and iOS 7 uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to send your photo (and the recipient can accept or decline). It also offers the option to make yourself invisible to nearby iOS 7 users from the Control Center.

Camera and Photos apps

Apple did a lot of work reorganizing both the camera app and how images live in the photo app. The camera app surfaces all your shooting modes so you can swipe and then tap them to frame your shot, such as still, panorama, video, and a square, Instagram-like configuration. The app also offers a basic burst mode in which you touch and hold the main button to take continuous shots from which to pick the best one later.
