The international architectural firm GDS Architects has received a construction permit for the world’s first invisible tower. Named Tower Infinity, the building will stand 450 meters tall and located in Cheongna, just outside Seoul. To achieve invisibility, the architects are using optical illusion. Tower Infinity, or City Tower as is it also known, will be fitted with a high-tech LED facade that integrates projectors and 18 strategically placed weatherproof optical cameras.

These cameras will take real-time images of the area directly behind the building. The images will be digitally stitched into a panorama and then projected onto the building’s reflective surface. It will appear that anyone looking at the building are seeing straight through it to the other side, so the structure seems to blend into the skyline at certain times of the day.

The GDS website says that, “The tower subtly demonstrates Korea’s rising position in the world by establishing its powerful presence through diminishing its presence. What is slighty concerning though, is that fact that this invisible building will be situated near the Incheon Airport. So far no comments have been made as to the reason why this location was selected or how they plan to manage it.
