Samsung Galaxy S5 Unveiled

Samsung sought Monday to frame its new Galaxy S5 smartphone as a lifestyle product, as it emphasized a built-in heart-rate sensor and improved camera features over its slightly larger size.
One of the main appeals of Samsung phones has been their size. The screen has steadily increased since the 4 inches (10.2 centimetres) on the original S from 2010, while the iPhone made that jump to 4 inches only in 2012 and has stayed that way since.

But the S5 pushes the screen to only 5.1 inches (13 cms), measured diagonally, from 5 inches (12.7 cms) in last year's model. Instead of size, Samsung touted the new phone's ability to adapt its screen to changing external conditions and to dim it to avoid disturbing others nearby. The Galaxy S5 offers the world’s fastest autofocus speed up to 0.3 seconds and the advanced High Dynamic Range (HDR), reproduce natural light and color with striking intensity at any circumstances. Also new Selective Focus feature allows users to focus on a specific area of an object while simultaneously blurring out the background. With this capability, consumers no longer need a special lens kit to create a shallow depth of field (DOF) effect.

Here are the specs of Samsung’s new flagship handset:
  • Size: 142 x 72.5 x 8.1
  • Weight: 145g
  • 5.1-inch FHD Super AMOLED display (1920 x 1080 resolution)
  • 2.5GHz quad-core processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16/32GB of memory
  • microSD support up to 64GB
  • 16-megapixel camera with UHD 4K video recording at 30fps and various software features
  • 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera
  • LTE Cat 4 (150/50Mbps) support
  • 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac HT80 MIMO (2×2) Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth 4.0 BLE/ANT_
  • USB 3.0
  • NFC
  • IR Remote
  • 2800mAh battery
  • IP67 Dust and Water Resistant
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Heart rate sensor
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat with various software features on top including Ultra Power Saving Mode, Download Booster, S Health 3.0, Quick Connect, Private Mode, Kids Mode
Samsung has just announced that the Galaxy S5 will be available starting April 11th in 150 countries. Over here in the US, it'll be available on Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, MetroPCS and U.S. Cellular. Ma Bell is going one step further, offering up the Gear 2 and the Gear Fit smartwatches as well. If you'd rather go elsewhere for your mobile needs, retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, RadioShack, Sam's Club, Target and Walmart will have the GS5 plus all three of Samsung's newly announced wearables.

As for our friends across the Atlantic, UK providers EE, Three and Vodafone UK have jumped aboard the GS5 bandwagon, as have retailers Phones4u and Carphone Warehouse. Though it hasn't been announced, we expect other carriers such as O2 will support the phone too. No word on pricing just yet, but we expect we'll find that out closer to the phone's April launch date.

Nokia Announces the X and X+, its First Android Phones

Nokia is officially launching its very first Android devices, known as the X and the X+, on stage at its annual Mobile World Congress press conference. We were all taken aback by the second (and third) device (since only one leaked), so it's incredible to see Nokia make such a huge foray into enemy territory. The X will have a 4-inch, 840 x 480 IPS screen, 512MB RAM, 4GB of storage expandable storage via microSD slot and 3-megapixel camera, while the X+ sports the same specs but more RAM (768 MB) and an included 4GB microSD card.

You won't be getting Google's apps or Play store, however as both handsets will be based on the forked AOSP Android OS. Nokia says that'll have the advantages of the Android ecosystem, but with a "differentiated experience." So far, Here Maps, MixRadio, Skype and Outlook are being featured on the Nokia Store. You can access the Nokia and third party stores using the devices, but not Google Play, obviously. We've heard SwiftKey will be available on the Nokia X range (and for free, too), as will BBM, which is also coming to Windows Phone sometime "this summer."

The new devices are featuring a ported version of FastLane for Asha devices as a sort of skin, to give a similar experience as its other budget handsets. When you swipe across it, it'll bring up a sort of notification bar showing recently used apps, missed calls and texts and other activities. During the demo, Elop showed both the Nokia Store also Yandex, where he pulled down Aero Express, a Russian-flavored app. The X will be available immediately in growth markets (ie, not the US) and run 89 euros. The X+, meanwhile, will run 99 euros but won't arrive until sometime in Q2 this year.

Samsung's Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo Smartwatches to Run on Tizen OS

Samsung has introduced two new smartwatches, the Galaxy Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo. The distinguishing feature between the two is that the Gear 2 has a 2-megapixel camera, while the Neo is sans camera, and half an ounce lighter for it. Both Galaxy Gear 2 watches offer two to three days' worth of battery life, versus the single day on Gear. The Gear 2 also incorporates its camera into the watch face—a much cleaner look than the bump that resulted from its residence in the watchband of the Gear.

Both watches feature fitness applications, including a heart-rate monitor, a pedometer, and a (downloadable) sleep and stress monitor. Bluetooth and Bluetooth Calling are included, and so are the abilities to accept or reject incoming calls and messages. Crucially, the new watches also feature stand-alone music players that can attach to Bluetooth headsets, eliminating the need for a phone to listen to music.

"We see a unique role for Tizen in the industry to create and to grow a new, open and flexible, mobile operating system that allows developers to [write once and run] on many devices," Christopher Croteau, managing director Intel's Software and Services Group and a board member of the Tizen Association, said at the time.

The Gear 2 smartwatches will be able to access a "robust application ecosystem" at launch, Samsung CEO JK Shin said in a statement. Thanks to a workaround, the watches will also be able to run Android apps. "With the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo," Shin added, "we have enhanced everything consumers love about the Gear to offer unparalleled smart freedom in their everyday life."

WhatsApp to Add Free Voice Calls After Facebook Acquisition

Messaging giant Whatsapp will soon be adding free voice calls for its 465 million users. The update comes shortly after the app was acquired by Facebook in a $19 billion deal. The new service is likely to be available in the second quarter of this year. WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum said at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that they want to hit 1 billion users with the new feature.

“We are driven by the mission that people should be able to stay in touch anywhere and affordably,” Koum said at the Mobile World Congress industry fair in Barcelona on Monday.

The company's move will not sit well with telecom operators. Adding free calls threatens telecom revenue source which has been declining anyway as carriers' tweak tariffs to focus on mobile data instead of calls. Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Viber and WeChat have won over telecom operators' customers in recent years by offering a free option to text messaging.

The messaging app has tied with Telecom operator e-plus to offer special tariffs to access the app. He added that Whatsapp will continue to function the same way as it was before the Facebook acquisition.

"We saw Windows Phone become the fastest growing operating system in the world - led by the Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 1020. Facebook Shuts Down its Email Service

Facebook has stopped its @facebook.com mailing service, citing low usage. Those using the email service will soon receive an email telling them that their emails from @facebook.com account will be forwarded to the primary address listed on their email accounts.
Email forwarding is turned on by default, but users can choose to opt-out of the service by simply removing their primary email address from their account or turning it off from the account settings.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the news in a statement to the Verge, “Most people have not been using their @facebook.com email address.”

The service didn't catch up, due to the lack of a friendly interface. The Messages screen always highlighted Facebook messages, and didn't support cc's, bcc's, or subject lines. Facebook received a lot of criticism in June 2012, when it highlighted @facebook.com email addresses on profiles while hiding other email addresses. The move was intended to make user email id's private, but users thought Facebook was favoring its own email services over others. The email id's also caused many privacy issues as users could easily guess others' email id's with just their profile names.

Google Working on a WiFi App for Android and iOS

Google is reportedly working on a WiFi app for Android and iOS devices that automatically authenticates and connects to free hotspots inside Starbucks stores as well as private hotspots.

According to sources, Google has internally discussed linking the app to its rollout of faster WiFi connections to all 7,000 Starbucks stores in the US. Currently, Starbucks customers need to find the access point open their browser and agree to the terms and conditions.

The new WiFi 'Google Starbucks' hotspots will allow users to connect automatically. Google has said it will provide Starbucks stores with a 100x speed boost in Fiber cities like Austin, KC and Provo and is now exploring the feasibility of deploying fiber connections in 34 more US cities.

Google, Microsoft, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and a number of other companies have joined together to form WifiForward, a collaboration aimed at improving and expanding Wi-Fi networks. Google is one of the first companies to offer free city wide WiFi network. The internet giant rolled out over 500 streetlight hotspots across Mountain View, California and is now planning to roll out Google WiFi to more locations across the US and Canada. Google has donated nearly $600,000 to equip 31 of San Francisco's public parks with free WiFi for at least two years.

OS X Update Closes Networking Security Hole, Brings More FaceTime Features

Just days ago, Apple released an update for iOS that closed up a web networking security hole, and today Macs running OS X Mavericks have gotten similar treatment.

The update to 10.9.2 doesn't explicitly list the SSL vulnerability patch among its updates in the download notification, but we've confirmed its presence with Apple. The update also brings along a slew of other security fixes as well. And, if you aren't running Mavericks just yet, Apple tells us not to fret, for separate security updates tailored to other affected versions of OS X will be coming along shortly.

Along with the peace of mind knowing your laptop is more secure than it was yesterday, the update also delivers FaceTime audio calling and call waiting to desktop voice chats, plus iMessage is getting the power to block folks from sending you messages. Naturally, 10.9.2 also brings various audio, Safari and email bug fixes, too. The update's available now, so don't let us keep you from it. Stay safe, folks.

Google Starts Rolling Out a New YouTube Interface

YouTube has launched a new center aligned user interface similar to its mobile app. The update also brings better playlist management options and makes the service more accessible.

The new interface has a center-aligned look which focuses more on videos. Two links at the top of the screen allow users to navigate between recommended videos and their subscriptions. The 'guide' which has your subscriptions and playlists is displayed more prominently next to the YouTube logo in the center of the screen.

The new interface also brings easier Playlist management options. Now, when you create a playlist, YouTube will pop up a new page that lets you organize your videos. The new design will be rolled out over the next few days for users worldwide.

Facebook Acquires WhatsApp for $19 Billion

Facebook said Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire WhatsApp in a $16 billion cash and stock arrangement with the popular messaging application's parent company. The announcement was made in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The deal for WhatsApp includes 183,865,778 shares of Facebook stock, valued at $12 billion, along with $4 billion in cash. Once the acquisition closes, Facebook has promised to grant 45,966,444 restricted stock units (RSUs) to WhatsApp founders and employees, tacking on an additional $3 billion in value to the deal. The additional RSUs will vest over four years following closing.

WhatsApp has 450 million monthly active users, more than 70 percent of whom are active on a daily basis, Facebook said in a press release. The service is also adding 1 million new registered users per day. The application will, much like Instagram, remain independent from its new parent company.

"You can continue to use WhatsApp no matter where in the world you are, or what smartphone you're using," Koum said. "And you can still count on absolutely no ads interrupting your communication. There would have been no partnership between our two companies if we had to compromise on the core principles that will always define our company, our vision and our product."

'E-mail Miles' Tracks How Far Your Email Has Travelled

Inventor Jonah Brucker-Cohen has developed a new technology which uses GPS and internet tracking to calculate the number of miles an email has travelled before reaching an inbox. The system tracks where a message was sent from and where it was received.

The system developer, Jonah Brucker-Cohen states that the system calculates the total distance between the two and displays it on the screen alongside a map. He stated, that he hoped it would remind people how quickly they can communicate today in a digital world, according to 'The Times.'
The system shows how indirect the route of emails can be. For eg, an email sent from New York to Dakar, Senegal, travel's 790 miles (1,271km) to a server in Chicago Illinois, and that went 2,163 miles (3,481km) to Mountain View, California; 1,699 miles (2,734km) to Dallas; 4,745 miles (7,636km) to London; and 2,718 miles (4,374km) to its destination - 12,115 miles (19,497 km) in total.

“Email Miles is both a free and open source plug-in for standard email software such as Apple’s Mail and Gmail that scans outgoing emails and their destination servers for their Geolocation, calculates the distance in miles and countries and continents the mail has traveled and tags each incoming email with this info,” reads the FundAnything page of the Email Miles project.

Google Wants to Bring Google Fiber Gigabit Internet to 34 New Cities in the US

Google is planning a huge expansion for Google Fiber, its ultra-fast Internet and television service in the United States. The company has reached out to 34 cities, spanning nine metro areas across the country, to see what, if any, roadblocks there are to rolling out Google Fiber in their area.
At the moment, Google Fiber is only available in Kansas City, Kansas and Provo, Utah – with plans to support Austin, Texas by mid-2014. support Austin, Texas by mid-2014. While the initiative has certainly attracted attention, it’s only affected a tiny proportion of the United States population up until now.
The new municipalities that Google is considering are:
Avondales Estates, Brookhaven, College Park, Decatur, East Point, Hapeville, Sandy Springs and Smyrna (Atlanta); Scottsdale and Tempe (Pheonix); Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham, Lake Oswego and Tigard (Portland); Carrborro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Garner, Morrisville and Raleigh (Raleigh-Durham); Santa Clara, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Palo Alto (San Jose); Charlotte, Nashville, Salt Lake City and San Antonio.

Google says that it’ll announce which of the new cities will receive Google Fiber by the end of the year. For each location, the company will consider a number of factors that could affect the roll-out, such as the nature of the landscape, the density of housing and local infrastructure. City leaders, meanwhile, will be asked to provide information about the current conduit, water, gas and electricity lines in their area.

“They’ll also help us find ways to access existing infrastructure—like utility poles—so we don’t unnecessarily dig up streets or have to put up a new pole next to an existing one,” Milo Medin, VP for Google Access Services said.

Guwahati Teen Develops Computer System that Uses Microchip Instead of Hard Disk

City schoolboy Afreed Islam on Monday launched his prototype of a computer system that uses a microchip instead of a hard disk and is embedded with an operative system that allows dependencies on both Windows and Linux-based software simultaneously.

A student of Little Flower School, Hatigaon, Afreed, who will be appearing for his Class X CBSE examinations beginning March 3, claimed that his invention (named Revo Book) replaced both mechanical and electronic hard disk drives with a microchip that also doubles as a storage unit and therefore does not run the risk of data loss or system crash.

He has also developed an operating system and has named it ReVo IX which he has installed on the microchip. He claimed that it features faster execution speed, an inbuilt firewall and stands as a complete independent operating system. Afreed said he has applied for a patent.

“A hard disk drive always runs the risk of data loss as it has moving parts which may crash due to shock and also when brought in a strong magnetic field. However, the microchip has no moving parts and is also not influenced by magnetic field, therefore there is little risk of data loss of the microchip-run computing system invented by Afreed,” explained Anupam Barman, Senior Systems Consultant at the Assam Electronics Development Corporation Limited, who was also present at the launch of Afreed’s invention.

“The idea to develop the system came to my mind first when I was studying in Class VII and encountered some problems while operating the computers which my parents had bought for me,” said Afreed. He said he had collaborated with a German company for manufacturing the computer system.

Siddhartha Debnath, a scientist at the Patent Information Centre of the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), said that Afreed’s invention fulfilled all basic eligibility criteria for submission of a patent application.

Apple and Google Reportedly Rejecting 'Flappy Bird' Clones

New game submissions containing the word ‘Flappy’ are reportedly being rejected by both Apple and Google.

A seemingly endless stream of clones have hit both the App Store and Google Play since the removal of Dong Nguyen’s original Flappy Bird but TechCrunch reports that a number of developers have now had submissions for clones blocked by both companies.

Apple’s reasons for the rejections are as follows:
22.2: Apps that contain false, fraudulent or misleading representations will be rejected
22.2 We found that your app, and/or its metadata, contains content that could be misleading to users, which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines. We found your app name attempts to leverage a popular app.

None of which addresses the multiple clones already available – and charting highly – on both stores, of course.

Firefox and Chrome Vulnerable to Cyber Attacks: CERT-In

Cyber security experts have detected a series of several vulnerabilities in popular web browsers Chrome and Firefox, according to PTI. Internet users in the Indian cyber space have been asked to keep a check on their systems. In view of these browsers prone to such virus-based activities, users have been advised to upgrade their versions on their workstations.

CERT-In is the agency to combat hacking, phishing and to protect security-related defenses of the Indian cyber space arena. Dhingana, The Indian Music Streaming Startup Finally Shutdown

Dhingana, the Indian music streaming startup battling to stay alive for past few months, has finally shutdown.

We have been trying to speak with Dhingana CEO Rohit Bhatia for past few weeks, but he’s been requesting more time for bringing clarity on the startup’s future. Dhingana is among the top-funded music startups in India. It raised $7 million in Series B funding in October last year from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Inventus Capital Partners and Helion Venture Partners.
Dhingana’s website is now showing this goodbye message:
    Goodbye!
We hope that you enjoyed listening to Dhingana as much as we enjoyed building it.
But alas, all good things must come to an end.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for letting us be a part of your musical moments!
    - The Dhingana Team
Dhingana started facing a crisis when its biggest partner — T Series — said it will not renew the agreement. T-Series president Neeraj Kalyan had confirmed to TechCrunch, that the company will not renew the license set to expire for nearly 8,000 songs from Dhingana’s catalogue. Until then, Dhingana’s CEO had said discussions were on for exploring the road ahead, and it all looked like a near-death experience. But it’s all over now for Dhingana.Meanwhile, Dhingana’s shutdown underscores some of the existential questions faced by startups in India’s online music, entertainment space. Curbing piracy and ensuring a healthier ecosystem where music labels and streaming services working more closely can help, but it might take longer, and Dhingana could not wait that long.

Bharti Airtel to Launch 4G Services on mobile in Bangalore

Bharti Airtel will launch its 4G services for mobile devices in Bangalore later this month. Moreover, the company will be offering users 4G plans at the 3G data rates. If rolled out, it will be the first time 4G experience will be available on mobile platforms.

However, Airtel users with 4G-supported smartphones, migrating to 4G, will have to get a new SIM card. "Existing 3G plans will apply to users who will be migrated to 4G for no extra cost. However, they will have to get a SIM card replacement. Voice networks will continue to run on 2G and 3G networks," Srini Gopalan, Bharti Airtel's director for consumer business is quoted as saying.

Currently, only few phones such as the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C support the 2300 MHz frequency band on which 4G is being offered.

"We expect more devices will soon come enabled for this band. China has just allocated 4G spectrum in the 2300 MHz band to its operators, so there should be a lot more manufacturing of such devices," Srini Gopalan, director of consumer business in Bharti Airtel India, added.
According to the Airtel official, users on 4G network will be able to download 10 standard movies within 30 minutes.

Facebook Goes Beyond 'Male' and 'Female' with New Gender Options

Facebook on Thursday added new gender options for people's profiles. In a nod to the "it's complicated" sexual identities of many of its users, the social network on Thursday added a third "custom" gender option for people's profiles. In addition to Male or Female, Facebook now lets U.S. users choose among some 50 additional options such as "transgender," "cisgender," "gender fluid," "intersex" and "neither."

Users also now have the ability to choose the pronoun they'd like to be referred to publicly: he/his, she/her, or the gender-neutral they/their. Facebook said it worked with a group of leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organizations to come up with the new gender categories.

    • Go to your Timeline (which we sometimes refer to as your profile).
    • Click Update Info at the bottom of your cover photo.
    • Click Edit in the top right of the section you'd like to change. (The new gender options are only accessible within an autocomplete drop-down menu, so you have to begin typing to see them appear.)
    • Enter your new info and click Save.
Among other new gender options identified on Facebook so far: Trans Female, Trans Male, Trans Person, Gender Variant, Gender Questioning, Bigender, Androgynous, Pangender and Transsexual.

eBay India Starts '9 Hour Delivery' Service in Mumbai

After Amazon and Flipkart, its eBay’s turn to woo Indian shoppers with quick delivery service. eBay India has launched its new ‘9 Hour Delivery’ service. Pretty much as the name suggests, the online retailer promises to deliver select goods within 9 hours. Currently, the service is available only for users in Mumbai. Unlike Flipkart and Amazon’s one-day delivery services that charge Rs 90 and Rs 99 respectively, the eBay service comes without any additional shipping charges and fees.

According to the terms of the service, customers who place their orders before 12 noon will get their products before 9 pm on the same day. On the other hand, orders placed after 12 noon will be shipped the next day.

This service is applicable only on popular “hot selling” products across categories. eBay will also be promoting the campaign effectively on-ground and create awareness about the service through the Mumbai Dabbawala Association, Meru Cab fleet and on radio.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Retail Box Image Leaks, Reveals Full Specifications

An alleged leaked image of the Samsung Galaxy S5 retail box packing has been spotted on the Internet, days before the expected launch of the smartphone.

The Samsung Galxy S5 will be launched at MWC on February 24, an image of a Samsung Galaxy S5 retail box packaging has already been spotted on the web. The image shows that the phone features a 5.25 inch QHD (Quad HD) Super AMOLED display, a 20 megapixel rear camera along with a 2.0 megapixel front camera. Under the hood, it has a 2.5GHz quad-core processor bundled with 3GB of RAM. It also reveals that the device packs a 3000mAh battery and runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

Although the specs align with few rumoured specifications tipped earlier, but it is of course possible that the box image could be doctored. The styling and the icons shown in the image look exactly like the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 box packaging, and it is highly unlikely that Samsung would keep the same branding for another generation.

    Flickr Celebrates 10 Years

The Yahoo-owned photo-sharing site launched on Feb. 10, 2004. A decade after hitting the scene, Flickr now boasts nearly 2 million groups, and its users share around a million photos every day, the company wrote in a blog post.

"It's exciting for me to celebrate Flickr's birthday!" co-founder Stewart Butterfield said in a statement. "When we dreamed this photo site 10 years ago, we couldn't have imagined the impact it would have on digital photo sharing and the way it would connect people worldwide. I am proud of Flickr and excited for what's ahead."

These days, Flickr is facing stiff competition, with new photo-sharing services hitting the Web and app stores all the time. Under the purview of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, however, Flickr last May rolled out a major site redesign, ditching its old interface for photos that fill the screen, and upped the free storage limit to 1TB per user. The company has also been paying more attention to its apps, with a new version for Android and updates for iOS.

Candy Crush and Outlook Among Top Battery Sucking Apps: Battery Doctor

A recent study performed by KS Mobile, makers of the Battery Doctor app, found camera app Camera360 Ultimate as the top battery sucking Android app. Other popular battery sucking apps in the list are Microsoft's Outlook and the addictive game Candy Crush Saga.

KS Mobile tested which Android apps trigger a warning to smartphone users about their own battery consumption levels with the highest frequency. Camera360 Ultimate app which has nearly 180 million users world wide was the top app in the list. In second place was Microsoft's Outlook.com app. The app which has "8 different color themes to personalize your experience," is the reason for your phone's low battery.

KS Mobile says that users should practice "smart battery preservation." The reports suggest users should disable automatic time zones and clock updates; reducing the frequency of push notifications and turn the GPS off when not required. The report also says that users should charge their smartphone through a power outlet instead of a USB port.
