Feedly, Evernote Struck by DDoS Attacks

In a post on the company's blog, Feedly announces that their servers have suffered a distributed denial-of service (DDoS) attack.

An update was published a short while ago saying that the infrastructure is modified so that the online service is restored. Using Twitter as communication channel, Evernote, the popular note-taking service that integrates with Feedly, informed their followers of a similar problem, but later on, the company managed to restore services, which are up and running at the moment. Evernote did not publish other details about the attack, but Feedly informed that the purpose of the service disruption was money extortion.

“Criminals are attacking feedly with a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS). The attacker is trying to extort us money to make it stop,” the company says.

Security experts advise not to give in to ransom requests in order to discourage criminals from such practice; and this is exactly the action Feedly took, as their technicians worked to restore functionality of the service and cooperated with law enforcement to determine the group behind the attack.

“We refused to give in and are working with our network providers to mitigate the attack as best as we can,” says the initial blog post.

Users should not fear about personal details being compromised because the purpose of distributed denial-of-service is to bring down servers by bombarding them with useless data, which, at one point, can no longer be processed by the server. However, such activities can disguise a different type of attack, as was the case with GameOver ZeuS botnet used by cybercriminals to distract victims from noticing a cyberheist.

[UPDATE, June 12]: Feedly made a new post on the company notifying users that the attack has been neutralized and that services are functional on all supported platforms. Updating all users (40 million) may take a few hours, though.

Google Acquires Satellite Maker Skybox For $500 Million

Google has acquired Skybox Imaging, a company that captures high-resolution imagery with satellites, for $500 million in cash. At least initially, it sounds like Skybox's technology will be used to bring fresh satellite photos to Google Maps and Google Earth. "Their satellites will help keep our maps accurate with up-to-date imagery," Google told Recode in a statement. "Over time, we also hope that Skybox’s team and technology will be able to help improve Internet access and disaster relief — areas Google has long been interested in." Google has spent significant cash to snatch up drone and satellite companies for its future plans. In April, it purchased Titan Aerospace, a drone maker that Facebook had reportedly been eyeing for its own internet delivery ambitions. The Information first reported Google's interest in both companies.

After buying Titan, Google said "atmospheric satellites could help bring internet access to millions of people, and help solve other problems, including disaster relief and environmental damage like deforestation." Eventually it may repurpose Skybox's satellites for a similar purpose. Google has already outlined plans to deliver internet service to the far reaches of Earth with its "moonshot" Project Loon, which uses balloons to beam down web connectivity in remote areas. Presumably it's simultaneously working on an expanded, even grander vision that these acquisitions fit into, but only Larry Page and co. know for sure.

Mozilla Collaborates with Intex and Spice to Launch $25 Phones in India

Mozilla Foundation, which is famous for its Firefox browser, is planning to launch super-low-cost smartphones in India and Indonesia in the second half of 2014. These budget smartphones powered by Mozilla's Firefox OS will start from $25.

Firefox has already launched low-budget smartphones in Europe and Latin America starting from $60. The US-based company has collaborated with four handset makers as well as five wireless carriers to provide five Firefox-powered smartphones in Europe and Latin America. The company is now targeting emerging markets like India and South East Asia with an aggressive pricing. To tap the next billion first-time smartphone users, Mozilla is collaborating with Chinese chip maker Spreadtrum Communications Inc. to unveil a low-cost chipset that enables smartphones priced at $25 this year. The company has already partnered with handset makers Spice and Intex to launch its budget handsets in India.

"With a $25 price tag, there is no price gap between a smartphone and a feature phone," Mr. Gong said. "This attractive price point would help motivate feature-phone users to switch to smartphones."
Low-cost smartphones are becoming increasingly popular in emerging markets like India. Companies like Nokia, Samsung and Micromax are already targeting the budget smartphone segment and the prices of smartphones are expected to go down even further. Chipmaker ARM predicts that a $20 smartphone running Android and single-core Cortex A5 based SoC will go on sale “in the next few months”.

The Firefox OS handsets will not be able to compete with the majority of iOS, Android, and Windows Phone devices, but the low price devices will definitely attract first-time smartphone buyers.

Finally: Grand Theft Auto V PC Announced

Nearly a year's worth of whining and rumor-mongering has finally paid off: Grand Theft Auto V is coming to PC this fall, a full year after its debut on last generation's Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. And, for the console crowd, it's also making its way onto the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
The game moved almost a billion dollars in product in its first day last year, so a next-gen/PC release seemed inevitable—it lets Rockstar both double-dip on those who want the definitive version and rope in the (few) people who missed the game the first time around.

Furthermore, you'll be able to transfer your progress from the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game to your next-gen platform of choice.

The new version of Grand Theft Auto V will, of course, probably feature higher-resolution textures, anti-aliasing, better lighting, better weather, more traffic, and all the other graphical bells and whistles we've come to expect with this sort of repackaging.

The big excitement with a PC version of GTAV is mod support. Grand Theft Auto IV is still one of the most hilarious repositories of mod content six years after release.

Nokia Mobile Giant Unveils its First Foldable Displays

Despite not winning any awards at the Society for Information Display (SID) pedantic conference in San Diego, Nokia stunned everyone with prototypes of its adaptable 5.9-inch OLED panel. The visitant has improved two displays in cooperation with Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) Co Ltd and Front Medium Pattern (AFD).One of the demo has an awing knowledge to sheepcote to a 2mm radius which is different the flexuous displays from the likes of Samsung and LG which are versatile to a predestinate extent exclusive.

At the discussion, Samsung took the gilded for Exhibit of the Year gift for its 5.68-inch FHD semicircular AMOLED pass while LG G Flex won the golden in Pass Usage of the Gathering for its 6-inch falcate representation. The conference was held to focalise solely on display study and both new original communicate features showcased at the event might not be pronto lendable in devices as of now.

It is anticipated that Nokia strength use much application in its hereafter smartphones but soil now, it has been disagreeable to play innocuous. The accompany showed two of its new pliant displays live week at the discussion in San Diego.

The show has been prefab by placing a colourize filter, TFT and OLED layers between two protection layers and a versatile stratum. When its scenery, the communicate measures 5.9 inches with a presentation breakdown of 1280x720. One of the prototypes could be collapsable in half like a assemblage while the opposite could be rolled into triad folds with a length of 4mm. According to its developers, the displays could be collapsed up to 100,000 times.

Facebook Takes Aim at Snapchat With 'Slingshot' App

Facebook has accidently launched a new messaging app named Slingshot – a would-be competitor to current mobile darling Snapchat. The app – which lets users quickly exchange photos and video messages complete with drawings and captions – went live on the iPhone App Store earlier this week in a few countries before being pulled by Facebook.
A representative for the company confirmed that they had “accidently” launched Slingshot and that the software will be given a full release “soon”.

Screenshots of the app show a minimal interface and a mechanic that apparently forces users to respond to a message before seeing its contents. This would certainly encourage usage – although for some it would undoubtedly feel too much like coercion. When it arrives Slingshot will be the latest in Facebook’s growing mobile empire as it unbundles functions from its core site in favour of dedicated apps.

Slingshot won’t be the first time that Facebook has taken aim at Snapchat either. A hastily-assembled clone of the popular app named Poke was launched in December 2012 before being unceremoniously taken off line in May this year.

As well as Slingshot’s misfire, Facebook – deliberately – announced that PayPal president David Marcus would be moving to the company to head up their mobile expansion. The company has applied for regulatory approval in Ireland to become an “e-money” institution as several other tech giants (including Google and China’s Alibaba) race to become mobile payment platforms.

Gigabyte Aorus X3 and X3 Plus Gaming Laptops Unveiled

Earlier today, we had the chance to visit the Gigabyte offices and one of the most exciting products being unveiled at Computex this year is Gigabyte’s Aorus X3 and X3 Plus gaming notebooks.

Unlike most gaming notebooks on the market which are big and bulky, the Aorus X3 and X3 Plus claim to fame is its sub 1″ thick chassis despite harboring hardware that’s generally found in gaming notebooks twice as large and twice as heavy. While the entire Aorus X3 series will contain features such as 4th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, up to 16GB of DDR3L (two slots), Nvidia GeForce GTX 870M 6GB GDDR5 graphics, and up to 1TB of ultrafast storage with two M.2 SATA SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration, the main difference between the Aorus X3 and the X3 Plus is that the the X3 will come with a 13.3″ QHD display (2560×1440) while the X3 Plus will include either a 13.9″ QHD (2560×1440) or 13.9″ QHD+ display (3200×1800).

The Aorus X3 series is expected to be available by Q3 2014 with the QHD models starting at $2,099 and the QHD+ model starting at $2,199.

The only unit I had a chance to get hands on time with is the Aorus X3 Plus and first impressions are quite good. The first thing you’ll really notice about the Aorus X3 Plus (QHD+ model) is its gorgeous IGZO powered QHD+ screen with its 3K resolution. Viewing angles were wide as expected, colors looked accurately reproduced, brightness was good and there were no issues with glare thanks to the screen’s matte finish.

Despite the notebook being on all day, the unit was perfectly comfortable to the touch although Gigabyte did have a laptop cooler underneath the unit since it was resting on a fancy backlit stand that was quite hot. The Aorus X3 Plus does have numerous vents on the bottom of the unit so cooling shouldn’t be a problem irregardless. Construction quality seemed quite good on the entire unit as it is constructed of metal although the metal did feel a bit thin in parts like the screen probably for weight savings. The entire notebook weighs a mere 4.12lbs, which is about the weight of a college textbook or most mainstream 13″ and 14″ notebooks.

Wearable Submarine to Search For World's Oldest Computer

THE world's most advanced robotic diving suit is getting ready to help search for one of the world's oldest computers. Called Exosuit, the suit has a rigid metal humanoid form with Iron Man-like thrusters that enable divers to operate safely down to depths of 300 metres.

Though designed for diving in the bowels of New York City's water treatment plants, earlier this month it underwent its first trials in seawater at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts. Marine archaeologists normally wear scuba gear to explore underwater sites in person, but the time that divers can spend at depth is limited by the dangers of decompression sickness, or the bends. For deep wrecks, researchers rely on remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) carrying cameras and sonar to scan an area, or large and expensive craft like the Alvin submarine that explored the wreck of the Titanic in 1986.

The $1.5 million Exosuit falls somewhere in between. "It's basically a wearable submarine," says Phil Short, a diving specialist on the planned mission to Antikythera. "The pressure inside is no different from being in a submarine or in fresh air. We can go straight to the bottom, spend 5 hours there and come straight back to the surface with no decompression."

The suit is made from an aluminium alloy, with articulated joints that permit divers to move their arms and legs freely. An umbilical cable from a ship supplies it with power for horizontal and vertical thrusters, and a rebreather that scrubs toxic carbon dioxide from exhaled air, giving 50 hours of life support. The cable also carries voice, video and data links. In the event of an emergency, a battery can power everything but the thrusters, including a back-up communication system. Foot pedals inside the Exosuit control the four thrusters to manoeuvre it through the water. And if a diver is busy with a complex task underwater, an operator topside can monitor the Exosuit's video feed and fire the thrusters to keep it in position – or even take over completely and bring the suit back to the ship.
The Exosuit is needed both because of the depth of the Antikythera wreck – it reaches 120 metres – and the delicacy of any artefacts that might lie within. When Greek sponge fishermen found the shipwreck in October 1900, the pressure was such that they had only 5 minutes on the seabed before having to ascend. It was risky: several divers were paralysed and one died from decompression sickness.

By the time underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau led an expedition to the ship in 1976, the amount of time that could be spent at the bottom had been extended to just 10 minutes. To maximise their efficiency, Cousteau's divers used a vacuum system to suck up a small area of the wreck, but this risked damaging or destroying priceless fragile objects. Despite the limitations of earlier expeditions, the treasures that were recovered at Antikythera represent some of the finest ancient Greek and Roman artefacts in existence. They tell the story of a Roman ship that foundered on the rocky shores of the island around 60 BC. The ship was laden with luxury goods, including bronze and marble statues, precious jewellery, a hoard of coins, glassware, ceramic jars – and fragments of a peculiar geared device whose importance was at first overlooked. Only in the 1950s did scholars figure out that the rusty metal pieces could be assembled into a sophisticated analogue computer for predicting astronomical events. They called it the Antikythera mechanism.

Ironically, 2000 years spent in corrosive saltwater may have been the best way to preserve these riches. Most precious objects from antiquity have been broken up or melted down over the millennia. The National Archaeological Museum in Athens has only 10 major bronze statues from Ancient Greece – and nine of them came from shipwrecks.

Foley believes that the Antikythera shipwreck still holds many secrets. A preliminary survey last year showed artefacts scattered over an area 50 metres by 10 metres, and even revealed a previously unknown shipwreck alongside the first one.

A New Android Feature Could Let Your Devices Interact Automatically

A new Android feature, called "Nearby," would allow more interactions between people, places, and things, according to Android Police, citing a source. The feature could be released in an upcoming Google Play service update.

Here's how the Nearby onboarding screen describes it:
Nearby lets you connect, share, and do more with people, places, and things near you.
When Nearby is turned on for your account, Google can periodically turn on the mic, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and similar features on all your current and future devices. Google+ and other Google services need this access to help you connect, share, and more.
When you turn on Nearby, you're also turning on Location History for your account and Location Reporting for this device. Google needs these services to periodically store your location data for use by Nearby, other Google services, and more.

So Nearby would know when two devices are near each other and would react accordingly. And, Android Police notes, users would be able to choose what they share, and, of course, whether they want to share at all.

Google would basically be opening up the mic and recording audio from your device, which raises some privacy concerns. Facebook recently released a new feature that users must turn on, which does something similar, and users are creeped out.

Android Police reports that the information wouldn't be known to the devices, helping to alleviate some privacy concerns. "To protect privacy, the information gathered from these various sources on your device would likely travel to Google, and be matched with others' information there, with only the acknowledgment of proximity being revealed to other devices," according to Android Police.

Google Partners with Twitter to Provide Public Disaster Alerts

Google Public Alerts recently incorporated tweets from locations affected by natural disasters. These notifications will be pushed from places like the National Weather Service and will help keep residents informed during times of duress. The idea behind using tweets is to quickly address public concerns like school closures and community evacuations. Google spreads this type of emergency information through several of its platforms, including Google Maps, Google Now and its Public Alerts website.

For now, this new alert feature is only available to English-speaking regions, however Google says its working on introducing new products to different territories sometime in the future. Although it may be odd seeing Google turning to Twitter for help, it’s good to see rivals put their differences aside for a good cause like public safety.

Researchers Discover New Bugs in Heartbleed

Security researchers have found new bugs in the Web encryption software that caused the malicious “Heartbleed” cyber threat. Experts say that the new vulnerabilities in OpenSSL, would allow hackers to spy on communications, is not as serious a threat as "Heartbleed."

The new bugs were discovered by the group which released an OpenSSL update that contains seven security fixes. Experts say that websites and technology firms that use OpenSSL technology should install the update on their systems as quickly as possible, but first the companies need to test their systems to make sure that they are compatible with the update.

"They are going to have to patch. This will take some time," said Lee Weiner, senior vice president with cyber security software maker Rapid7.

OpenSSL technology is used by major tech giants including Amazon.com Inc, Yahoo Inc, Facebook Inc and Google Inc. Thousands of technology products from companies, including Cisco Systems Inc, HP, IBM, Intel Corp and Oracle Corp also use the OpenSSL technology.

After having launched on the utmost end smartphones, smear engineering is shortly feat to hit the wearable devices. According to CEO Spasm Bergman, daub study may be obtainable on wearable devices by close period.

Synaptics is well-known troupe that provides earthborn program solutions for consumer electronics companies. The accompany currently provides slur study exclusive to Samsung, which has launched the boast on its stylish flagship Coltsfoot S5. Actress's comments feature triggered speculations that Samsung could be among the prototypal brands to compound slur sensors on its wearable devices.

Addressing the media at the Computex 2014 in Taipei, Actress said "Using smear ID sensors for a bantam eellike demo is not a big dispute."

Synaptics' introductory immature area-type smear sensors is slated to be disclosed in the endorsement half of 2014. The area-type sensors is questionable to touch the selfsame way as TouchUI - which agency soul necessity to residence fingerbreadth over them kinda than swiping it. The engineering module be initially implemented in the smartphones and tablets and then remaining devices thereafter.

Google Search Results Now Tell You When a Webpage is Not Optimised For Mobile

Google has released a fix for faulty redirects on its mobile search — which happens when a website displayed in the search results isn’t properly set up to handle requests from smartphones, and leads you to the mobile site homepage instead.

Starting today, first with English search results in the US, Google will have an indication below the result when it detects that smartphone users will be redirected to a homepage instead of the Web page displayed. You can still click ‘Try anyway’ if you want to reach the homepage.

If any of a site’s pages are redirecting smartphone users to the homepage, Google will also now start sending site owners a message on Webmaster Tools in the ‘Smartphone Crawl Errors’ section.

Cyber Crime Costs Global Economy $445 Billion a Year: Report

Cyber crime costs the global economy about $445 billion every year, with the damage to business from the theft of intellectual property exceeding the $160 billion loss to individuals from hacking, according to research published on Monday.

The report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said cyber crime was a growth industry that damaged trade, competitiveness and innovation. A conservative estimate would be $375 billion in losses, while the maximum could be as much as $575 billion, said the study, sponsored by security software company McAfee.

"Cyber crime is a tax on innovation and slows the pace of global innovation by reducing the rate of return to innovators and investors," Jim Lewis of CSIS said in a statement.

"For developed countries, cyber crime has serious implications for employment."

The world's biggest economies bore the brunt of the losses, the research found, with the toll on the United States, China, Japan and Germany reaching $200 billion a year in total.
Losses connected to personal information, such as stolen credit card data, was put at up to $150 billion.

About 40 million people in the United States, roughly 15 percent of the population, has had personal information stolen by hackers, it said, while high-profile breaches affected 54 million people in Turkey, 16 million in Germany and more than 20 million in China. McAfee, owned by Intel Corp, said improved international collaboration was beginning to show results in reducing cyber crime, for example in the takedown last week of a crime ring that infected hundreds of thousands of computers known by the name of its master software, Gameover Zeus.

Apple Unveils OS X Yosemite and iOS 8

Apple on Monday introduced new operating systems for its Mac computers and mobile devices, including a series of changes intended to help Macs work more seamlessly with iPhones and iPads.
The new Mac system, called Yosemite, includes a new design that streamlines the toolbar for using the computer’s calendar, clock and calculator. It also includes new icons. The new mobile system, iOS 8, adds functions like a smarter keyboard and new features for emails and text messages.

The announcements were made at the company’s annual software developer conference here. Apple also introduced a system called Continuity, which makes it easier to juggle content across different devices. For example, a user can connect a Mac and an iPad, making it possible to compose an email on a Mac, and then swipe up on the iPad screen to resume writing the same email. A phone conversation on an iPhone can be transferred to a Mac, too. The company’s iCloud online storage service received some attention, too. The company said it was adding a new feature called iCloud Drive, which allows users to store files online and access them across different devices, similar to the service offered by Dropbox, a start-up based in San Francisco.

In iOS 8, the mobile device keyboard has been expanded to improve what is called predictive-typing suggestions. When a user is typing, the keyboard tries to predict the next word the user will type to help save time. It can also predict responses to incoming messages — for example, if a spouse asked, “Do you want to go to dinner or a movie?” the messaging app will provide potential responses to pick from: Dinner, a movie, or “I don’t know.”

Apple also updated the messaging system to make it quicker to respond to text messages. When a text arrives, the message will pop up on the top of the screen; the user can simply swipe down to type a response rather than open the texting app.

The new Mac system and iOS 8 will release as free updates in the fall. Fans and customers anticipating new iPhones or a smart watch will have to wait — Apple did not introduce any new hardware on Monday. The company has traditionally reserved fall and winter for its biggest product announcements to target the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons. Though, the focus was more on developers, and Mr. Cook and his team outlined a host of new features for them. Mr. Cook said the new tools would help developers “make things they haven’t dreamed of and to push to a whole new level.”

App developers will now be able to take advantage of the fingerprint sensor on the latest iPhones for things like letting people log into their apps. Craig Federighi, the company’s senior vice president of software engineering, who delivered most of the keynote presentation, said that developers would not gain access to the fingerprints themselves — a user’s fingerprints will remain securely stored inside the iPhone’s processor, he said.

Apple also introduced HomeKit, a set of tools for developers to make iPhones more integrated with the so-called smart home, or wirelessly controlled home appliances like light bulbs, thermostats or door locks. One tool will allow Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, to communicate with these devices — saying “Get ready for bed” could dim the lights, close the garage door and lower the thermostat, for example.

Apple also introduced Swift, a new programming language for Macs and mobile devices. The company said Swift would help developers write more reliable code by eliminating common programming errors. Developers at the event on Monday expressed excitement about Swift. Miguel Rodriguez, a developer for Noma Systems, which makes apps for fashion brands like Zara, said he found the Apple event impressive, and was especially interested in the programming language.
Mr. Rodriguez said Swift contained some features that the current programming language used by Apple, Objective-C, had lacked. But, he said, the new language is “still familiar and it still looks the same.”

For Mac operating system, OS X

  • The next Mac operating system will be named Yosemite, after the national park.
  • Yosemite will have a translucent design. The notification centre will use that design, for instance, to give you an advance look at your calendar, weather and other information.
  • You'll be able to search for content on the computer and on the internet at once, similar to a feature that came with Microsoft's Windows 8.1 system.
  • Apple is expanding its iCloud storage service so that you can store and sync files of any type, not just the ones designed specifically for iCloud. It's similar to how services such as Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft's OneDrive let you work with the same files on multiple devices more easily.
  • A Mail Drop feature will make it easier to send large files. Instead of pushing the entire file by email and overloading mail servers, the Mac will create a link that the recipient can click for the full file.
  • The Mac's Safari web browser will have more privacy controls and ways to share links more easily.
  • The free Mac update will be out this fall. A version is available for developers Monday. This summer, Apple will also make a test version available to selected customers who aren't developers.

For iPhones, iPads

  • Like the new Mac OS, the iOS 8 system will have a universal search tool to cover both files on your device and content on the internet. It will also get the iCloud Drive service.
  • A "quick type" feature promises predictive typing suggestions. For example, if you start typing, "Do you want to go to," the phone will suggest "dinner" or "movie" as the next word. Currently, the suggestions are limited to spelling corrections.
  • A "do not disturb" feature will make it easier to stop notifications on a conversation with just a swipe, while a "tap to talk" feature records and sends audio messages to a recipient so you don't have to type.
  • IOS 8 will have a built-in health-management tool to help people track their vital signs, diet and sleeping habits. Apple's chief rival, Samsung Electronics Co., incorporated fitness-related features in its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S5.

  • Apple will also let app developers sell bundles at discounted prices.
  • The fingerprint security system on the iPhone 5s will be accessible to apps written by outside parties. Previously, it was limited to Apple functions, such as unlocking the phone and verifying iTunes purchases.

Amazon "3D" Smartphone Set For June 18 Launch

Amazon has posted a YouTube video to tease a major product launch on June 18 at an event in Seattle, hinting towards the launch of its much rumored smartphone. The event will be hosted by Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos, who will most likely unveil the company’s smartphone at the event.

This video runs for 50-second to show off a hunch of people looking at something mysterious, which is intestinally kept off camera, and getting overly excited by the discreet product. They are also passing comments like “It’s very real-life,” and “I don’t know how you guys do it.”

BGR Classic has earlier exclusively reported that there are two Amazon smartphones currently under development, out of which one is the higher-end device with a 4.7-inch 720p display, Snapdragon processor, and 2GB of RAM. Amazon is actually focusing on offering a unique user experience by offering glass-free 3D effects on its display. BGR Classic had also revealed photos of the phone.
The phone will come with four cameras situated on each of the phone’s corners on the front which will actually be low-power infrared cameras. These cameras will constantly track the user’s eyes and face and head movements to give a 3D effect to the interface. Considering that the people featured in this video too are moving their heads from side to side to possibly gaze at this 3D interface from different angles.

Amazon is also said to be deeply integrating this capability into the OS as well as its online store. For instance, a user will be able to change the viewpoint on a map on the phone my simply tilting the phone. Also, a user will be able to see a product from different angles while shopping for products on the phone.

DoT Rejected Vodafone’s Request on Licence Extension

The Department of Telecom has rejected Vodafone's request for the extension of its licences in seven circles. These licences were given for a twenty year period and are set to expire in December 2015. The seven circles includes Maharashtra, Gujarat and UP (East). Vodafone had written to the department seeking an extension of the licences for another 10 years. The other circles are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Rajasthan.

The DoT, however, said that "circumstances have materially changed" since the original licences were granted in 1995 and there is no immediate need for an extension of the licences. "Your request for extension of licences cannot be acceded to," DoT said. "Vodafone may apply for Unified Licence at appropriate time and obtain spectrum through market-related process for continuing the service in the service areas."

This is not the first time that Vodafone has sought extension of its licences in order to maintain continuity of operations and retain spectrum. The company had made a similar plea last year ahead of the spectrum auctions in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata in early 2014. However, the government had rejected the demand that had prompted Vodafone and other operators to compete for spectrum acquisition. A legal challenge on the matter is, however, still pending in the courts.

Vodafone holds spectrum in both 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands in the seven circles and a fresh auction could result in new and hefty investments by the company, which has just realized its first profit in the country in the previous fiscal. The company had spent Rs 19,600 crore in the February auctions where it bagged 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz spectrum in around a dozen circles.

Rejecting Vodafone's plea, the DoT also made a mention of Supreme Court's February 2012 judgment that said that scarce natural resources like spectrum should be distributed through a non-discriminatory method like auctions as this will result in protection of national/public interest.
DoT also spoke about the National Telecom Policy that had advocated de-linking of spectrum from future licences and recommended its availability at prices determined through market-related processes like auctions.

India Among Fastest Growing Smartphone Markets in Asia-Pacific: IDC

India has emerged as one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in Asia Pacific in the first quarter of this year. According to IDC's latest report, India was the highest growing market in Asia Pacific with a year-on-year smartphone shipment growth of over 186% in 1Q 2014.The vast majority of the country's user base migrated to smartphones from feature phones and as a result Indian smartphone market outshone other emerging markets like China which registered a year-on-year growth of 31% in 1Q 2014.

According to the IDC, the overall India mobile phone market stood at close to 61.07 million units in 1Q 2014 which is a 10% quarter-on-quarter dip and a mere 1% year-on-year growth. The dip in the overall mobile phone market shipments can be attributed to the 18% decline in the feature phone shipments from 4Q 2013 to 1Q 2014. This was offset by the smartphone market, where units shipped grew by close to 17% in 1Q 2014 compared to 4Q 2013. The consistent growth in the smartphone market is driven by enhanced consumer preference for smart devices and narrowing price differences.
The share of feature phones in the overall market further slipped further to 71% in 1Q 2014 which is a considerable decrease from 90% share in 1Q 2013.

The India smartphone market grew by a whopping 186% year-on-year in 1Q 2014. According to IDC Asia Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker (excluding Japan), vendors shipped a total of 17.59 million smartphones in 1Q 2014 compared to 6.14 million units in the same period of 2013. The shipment contribution of "phablets" (which IDC defines as 5.5 inch-6.99 inch screen size smartphones) in 1Q 2014 was noted to be around 5% of the overall market. The category grew by 125% in 1Q 2014 in terms of sheer volume over 4Q 2013. The primary reason behind this trend is the launch of low-end phablets by international and local vendors alike.

"This rapid pace of growth in smartphones is expected to continue in India. While we notice that much of the growth is coming from low-cost devices using the Android operating system, Windows is making adequate gains too based on the strength of the entry level product mix in smartphones," comments Kiran Kumar, Research Manager- Client Devices at IDC India.

Top Five Smartphone Vendor Highlights
Samsung maintained its leadership in the smartphone market with 35% market share in 1Q 2014. High volumes came in from the low-end devices like S7262 Galaxy Star Pro Dual SIM and Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582.

Micromax held onto its 2nd position with approximately 15% market share. The top selling models for Micromax came in from the low-end Bolt Series.

Karbonn was 3rd position with approximately 10% market share. Its low-end range of 2G smartphones did well in 1Q 2014.

LAVA climbed up to the 4th position with close to 6% market share. New XOLO launches like A500S and A500 have fared well.

Nokia made its way back to the top 5 list with about 4% market share. The Nokia X launch coupled with other low-end Lumia phones helped in improving the overall performance of the brand.

Google Introduces 64-bit Version of Chrome For Windows

Google has announced the launch of a 64-bit version of Chrome for Windows. It has introduced 64-bit Dev and Canary channels for Windows 7 and Windows 8 platforms.

According to Google, 64-bit helps it “take advantage of the latest processor and compiler optimizations, a more modern instruction set, and a calling convention that allows more function parameters to be passed quickly by registers. As a result, speed is improved, especially in graphics and multimedia content, where we see an average 25% improvement in performance.”

In addition to performance, Google hopes the 64-bit version will help bring security features by taking advantage of the new OS features like High Entropy ASLR on Windows 8. “Those extra bits also help us better defend against exploitation techniques such as JIT spraying, and improve the effectiveness of our existing security defense features like heap partitioning,” adds Google in a blog post.

Users can expect a significant improvement in stability for 64-bit Chrome over 32-bit Chrome. Google claims crash rates for the renderer process (i.e. web content process) are almost half that of 32-bit Chrome.

Google Chrome Extension Lets Users Send Encrypted Emails

Google has plans to make its email more secure, using add-on encryption software that will work like any other extension for Google Chrome. On its security blog Tuesday, Google announced it’s preparing a Chrome extension called End-to-End to make heavy-duty encryption easier for anyone to use.

Google already offers HTTPS, but its own email stats show only about half of Gmail messages are secured this way. HTTPS does protect Gmail messages while they’re in transit — the TP in HTTPS stands for "transfer protocol." The OpenPGP standard Google is using in End-to-End will help secure Gmail messages while they’re at rest on the sender or receiver’s machine.

They’ll have to be encrypted and decrypted with public and private keys — so not quite as easy as refreshing your inbox — but as Google says, it will probably appeal to “those who need added protection.”

Google has released the source code for community review before it goes live.

Instagram 6.0 For Android and iOS Brings New Photo-editing Tools

Facebook-owned photo sharing app Instagram, has rolled out v6.0 for Android and iOS. The update brings new photo-editing tools that allow users to adjust the contrast, brightness, saturation and other features of pictures they take with their smartphones. The version 6.0 of Instagram for Android and iOS is available on the Google Play Store and Apple app store, though when the tools will reach the Windows Phone version of the app has not been mentioned in the blog post.

The Instagram filters allows users to enhance photos or add different hues to them, for eg, you can make an image look like it was taken with a Polaroid camera in the 1970s. The new Instagram functionality allows users to fine tune the creative effects of their photos as opposed simply using a filter on top of them, making it a fully-fledged photo-editing app.

The tools are available via a wrench-shaped icon which appears after a filter has been selected. Apart from adding new 'creative tools', existing tools have also been improved including photo and video upload.

Global 4G/LTE Divide Will Be Wide in 2019: Ericsson Mobility Report

The latest Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) Mobility Report reveals for the first time that the number of active cellular M2M devices will increase 3-4 times by 2019, from 200 million at the end of 2013. While the majority of cellular M2M devices today are still GSM-only, that is expected to shift by 2016 when 3G/4G will represent the majority of active cellular M2M subscriptions.
Rima Qureshi, Senior Vice President and Ericsson's Chief Strategy Officer, says: "We see cellular M2M taking off. Over time, cellular M2M services and applications related to, for example, intelligent transport systems, will require very short latency in order to be efficient. By 2019 we estimate that more than 20 percent of the active cellular M2M devices will be connected to LTE subscriptions. We also see new device-to-device and M2M applications as a key focus of 5G networks."

  • New analysis: Machine-to-Machine (M2M) takes off with active cellular M2M devices to grow 3-4 times by 2019
  • 65 percent of all phones sold in Q1 2014 were smartphones
  • Mobile subscriptions to exceed world population in 2015
  • 4G/LTE subscriptions to reach 85 percent in North America and 30 percent in Europe in 2019

2015: subscriptions surpass global population
Next year the total number of mobile subscriptions will exceed the world's population. Mobile subscriptions have grown by 7 percent year-over-year, with 120 million net additions in Q1 alone. Mobile broadband subscriptions also continue to grow and will reach 7.6 billion by the end of 2019, representing more than 80 percent of total mobile subscriptions.

2016: smartphones outnumber basic mobiles
In two years' time, in 2016, the number of smartphone subscriptions will exceed those for basic phones and by 2019 the number of smartphone subscriptions is expected to reach 5.6 billion. In Europe, the number of smartphone subscriptions will reach about 765 million in 2019 and thereby exceed the population number.
65 percent of all phones sold in Q1 2014 were smartphones. Compared to today, a smartphone user in 2019 is expected to consume almost four times the amount of mobile data per month. This contributes to the 10-fold growth prediction in mobile data traffic between 2013 and 2019.
Qureshi says: "The growth and the evolution in M2M and the 10-fold growth in mobile data traffic strengthen the emphasis on network performance, handling complexity and maximizing the user experience. This in turn puts even higher requirements across the networks and the operations and business support systems of the future."

2019: 4G/LTE subscription divide will be wide
In 2019, LTE population coverage in Europe will be around 80 percent, but Europe will only see LTE subscription penetration of 30 percent compared to 85 percent in North America the same year. Even within Europe there will be large differences between Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe. Population coverage for LTE in North East Asia is expected to be 95 percent by 2019, with LTE penetration levels at 45 percent. By the same year, China is expected to reach over 700 million LTE subscriptions, representing more than 25 percent of total global subscriptions for LTE. This edition of Ericsson Mobility Report includes further analysis of how one solution to cater for the rising traffic levels and app requirements is to evolve mobile broadband networks into heterogeneous networks that leverage an evolved macro cell layer complemented with integrated small cells.
