India is poised to surpass the United States to become the
second largest smartphone market by 2019, according to a latest report
by Boston-based global market research firm Strategy Analytics.
Beating the slowdown trends, global smartphone sales will grow 13
percent in 2015, it added. ”China and the US will remain the largest
smartphone sales countries by 2014, making up 43 percent of global
volumes,” the report said. The world’s top 20 countries will account for
80 percent of the global smartphone volumes in 2015, up from 75 percent
in 2007.
Asia Pacific will continue to drive growth, accounting for 54 percent
of the global volumes in 2015. Central Latin America and Africa Middle
East will see strong smartphone growth by 2020 and will play the role of
a new growth engine for global market, it said.

Search giant Google
today said it is working with government to launch a nationwide contest
for developing a mobile application for the PM's Office, an initiative
to support the Digital India programme.
"MyGov, the citizen engagement platform of the Government and Google
are collaborating to launch a nationwide contest to develop a mobile app
for the PM's Office," Google said in a statement.
Google said the mobile app will bring the PMO to every citizen and the contest will showcase how Indians can build a world class app. As part of supporting the Prime Minister's vision, Google will run a
number of initiatives which also include programmes such as helping
women get online, getting Indian SMEs online and showcasing India's rich
heritage and culture online which will further promote the digital
empowerment of citizens.
The search giant said it will continue
to build a vibrant language ecosystem online and help the government
transition into the increasingly 'mobile' India. To encourage
digital literacy and Internet safety, Google is also introducing
curriculum for schools, officials and elected representatives. Google is working with the Department of Information Technology and other state governments to develop these initiatives. Google India Vice President and Managing Director Rajan Anandan
said India is already home to the third largest number of Internet
users globally with 245 million users as of June 2014 and is on track to
become the second largest user market by 2015 and a 500 million-user
market by 2016.
"Yet, there are more than a billion people who
will need to be brought online for India to realise the vision of a
digitally connected, knowledge economy. Prime Minister Modi's Digital India programme will play a transformational role in achieving this," Anandan added.
Microsoft is offering users who backup their photos to OneDrive the
opportunity to double their free online storage for a limited time. From
now until the end of September, users can claim 30GB of space for
saving twice as many photos in the cloud.
All you have to do is sign
up for OneDrive and activate the auto upload feature for your camera
roll sometime between now and the end of September, and you will get 30
GB of free OneDrive storage moving forward (15 GB base and 15 GB camera
roll bonus).”
Microsoft is marketing the offer at iPhone users who are upgrading to
iOS 8 or purchasing a new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, but the extra
space can be claimed by Android and Windows Phone users, too. Just
remember that you must sign up before the end of September, otherwise
you’re going to miss out on the 15GB bonus.
By backing up your photos and videos to an online storage service
like OneDrive, you can enjoy them at any time and on almost any device
without having to store them locally. That’s why a service like OneDrive
is essential for users with entry-level and midrange devices that don’t
offer a lot of internal storage — or 16GB iPhone users that don’t have
the pleasure of a microSD card slot.
By storing your photos and videos in the cloud, you can save local
storage space and have more room for apps, music, movies, and more. It
also means that if your handset is lost or stolen and you never get it
back, you haven’t lost your precious memories.
A new headset has been created which lets you connect to devices
just with a glance. Researchers have built a new wearable headset which
tracks the users gaze and connects him or her to the devices he or she
looks at.
The new gadget is called iGaze
and contains an eye-tracking camera which calculates where the wearer
is looking and transmits it to all the nearly internet-connected
devices, such as stereos and TVs via Wi-Fi. The devices within the field
of view reply with a beep played through the headset. When the wearer
hears it, they need nod to confirm a desire to connect. The two speakers
in the headset then send out an inaudible sound which Mics in the
nearby devices use to calculate where the wearer is standing, enabling
each device to discern if it has been selected.
Two people wearing the iGaze headsets can also connect with each other. The iGaze will allow wearers to swap files or contact
information with a glance or tap on the headset. The device has been
developed by Lan Zhang at Tsinghua University in China who said it could
let wearers interact with the world
in various ways. For example, in museums, the device’s head-up display
could serve up extra information when a visitor looks at a given
exhibit.
Nvidia
CEO Jen-Hsun Huang loves a spectacle. So while you’re reading this
sentence, the GPU-manufacturer’s founder is regaling thousands of gamers
at a 24-hour gaming event the company is sponsoring in Los Angeles with
the announcement of Nvidia’s latest graphics processor, code-named “Big
Maxwell.”
Despite Nvidia’s draconian efforts to prevent a recurrence of the leaks that presaged the announcement of its Shield Tablet,
details of the new GPUs have been dripping into the Interwebs for
several weeks. Here’s the official information: The new GPU will
initially be available in two SKUs, the $329 GeForce GTX 970 and the
$549 GeForce GTX 980. The GTX 970 has 1664 processor cores running at a
base frequency of 1050MHz (boost clock of 1178MHz), while the beefier
GTX 980 has 2048 cores running at 1126MHz (boost clock of 1216MHz). The
GTX 970 and the GTX 980 both have a 256-bit interface to 4GB of GDDR5
memory running at an effective speed of 7Gbps.
The
mounting brackets on cards following Nvidia’s reference design will
have one dual-link DVI connector, three DisplayPort 1.2 interfaces, and
one HDMI 2.0 port. HDMI 2.0 support is particularly important because it
supports 4K resolution at a refresh rate of 60Hz (the older HDMI 1.4b
standard is limited to a refresh rate of just 30Hz, which is fine for
movies, but terrible for games).
Dynamic
Super Resolution, according to Nvidia, enables the new GPUs to deliver
4K-quality graphics on a 1080p display. The processor effectively
renders 4K resolution in the GPU’s frame buffer, and then applies a
Gaussian filter to downsample the image to 1080p when it's output to the
monitor. This promises to increase visual fidelity without taking a hit
in frame rate. The feature is enabled by default in Nvidia’s GeForce
Experience utility, and the end user may increase the resolution as high
as 5K if desired. Scott Herkelman, general manager of Nvidia’s GeForce
business unit, demoed the effect for me at a briefing on Tuesday, and it
is impressive.
MSAA
works by having the GPU sample multiple locations of each pixel in a
scene, and then fully rendering and combining those pixels in the image
that’s ultimately rendered on the display. In 4X MSAA, four samples of
each pixel are taken. For all its effectiveness, MSAA is very
computationally expensive and can significantly reduce frame rate when
it’s enabled in a game. Nvidia’s Multi-Frame Anti-aliasing (MFAA) functions in a similar
fashion, but it samples pixels over two frames while rotating the
pixels. The technique, according to Nvidia, delivers results that are
very similar to MSAA without the performance hit that MSAA exacts.
Herkelman says MFAA is up to 30 percent faster than MSAA.
Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI) is the third big improvement to be
found in the GeForce GTX 970 and -980. Briefly, it’s a new lighting
technique that promises to deliver much better image quality without
requiring a significant performance hit. As Herkelman explained it, a
voxel (a portmanteau for volumetric pixel) stores information about the
light in a rendered environment.
Oculus Rift support
Nvidia’s VR Direct technology is intended to benefit upcoming virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift.
This bundle of features is designed to reduce latency, allow headsets
to take full advantage of Nvidia’s dual-GPU SLI technology, and improve
stereo-vision support. Herkelman demoed a new space-combat game for me
Tuesday, and it looked leagues better than anything I saw over the
course of Nvidia’s 3D Vision initiative. Like the original Maxwell architecture
Nvidia announced in February, these new GPUs adopt power-savings tricks
originally developed by Nvidia’s Tegra CPU team. Where a GeForce GTX
680 card with 2GB of memory has a thermal design power (TDP) rating of
195 watts, and a GeForce GTX 780 with 3GB of memory has a TDP of 250
watts, the TDP for the GeForce GTX 980 with 4GB is just 165 watts. Despite
the lower power consumption, Nvidia says the GTX 980 will deliver 5
teraflops of single-precision compute performance, compared to 3- and
4TFLOPs for the GTX 680 and -780, respectively (a teraflop is one
trillion floating-point operations per second). The new GTX 970,
meanwhile, has a TDP of 145 watts and delivers 4TFLOPs of compute
performance. Thanks to the lower TDPs, reference-design cards will have
two 6-pin power connectors to supplement the power the cards draw from
the PCIe bus. In the wake of this product launch, Nvidia is discontinuing its
GeForce GTX 780Ti, GTX 780, and GTX 770. The suggested retail price for
basic boards based on its GeForce GTX 760 has been reduced to $219.

As U.S. military
leaders outlined their strategy before Congress to fight Islamic State
militants on the battlefield, the National Security Agency chief said on
Tuesday he was watching the media-savvy group's cyber capabilities.Asked whether the Sunni Muslim
group was planning cyber attacks on U.S. interests, Admiral Mike Rogers
said he could not discuss specifics of the organization's technical
capabilities.
"We need to assume
that there will be a cyber dimension increasingly in almost any scenario
that we're dealing with," Rogers said at a cybersecurity conference in
Washington. Islamic State, which
controls large swaths of Iraq and Syria, has posted carefully
choreographed beheading videos online, trumpeted its violent acts on
Twitter and used social media to recruit foreign Islamists to the fight. "Its
public messaging and social media is as slick and as effective as any
I've ever seen from a terrorist organization," Homeland Security
Secretary Jeh Johnson told the Council on Foreign Relations in New York
last week. Cybersecurity expert James
Lewis of the Center for Strategic and International Studies said he did
not think Islamic State posed any immediate cyber threat to American
interests. While there may be no
imminent or specific cyber threat from Islamic State, there is a
wide-ranging intent to damage the West, a congressional aide said.
Different jihadist groups have talked about launching cyber attacks and
it may be just a matter of time before they find someone capable of
doing it, the aide said on condition of anonymity.
Rogers,
speaking generally on how cybersecurity threats are proliferating
across all aspects of American life, said: "There is nothing but
increased activity out there." As
Pentagon officials told Congress on Tuesday they were preparing for a
longer-term campaign against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, Rogers
said cyber defense was a long-haul effort.
The U.S. Cyber Command he leads hopes to have
6,200 cyber employees by 2016 to detect and deflect such threats, and
Rogers urged greater cooperation on cybersecurity between government,
business and industry. "There are a
lot of groups out there - individuals, nation-states - who feel that
this is an area worth investing in, because it achieves positive
outcomes for them if they can penetrate systems," Rogers said at the
Billington Cybersecurity Summit.
At very first it was Google who came up with Google Smart Glass then after a long gap Lenovo also announced of its upcoming Lenovo Smart Glass followed by China’s search giant Baidu who announced Baidu Eye a chinese smartglass to rival Google and now this time it was technology giant Sony who also announced its Smart Eyeglass
in Tokyo, Japan on Friday, 19th September, 2014. The SmartEyeglass from
Sony is a transparent lens eyewear that works by connecting with
compatible Smartphones
to superimpose information such as images, texts, and symbols, onto the
user’s field of view. Only Smartphones having Android 4.1 or later will
be compatible with the SmartEyeglass. Further, Android 4.3 or later is
necessary in order to make use of the video functionality of the camera.
The
SmartEyeglass will offer the users a diverse range of sensing
technologies, which includes an accelerometer, brightness sensor,
Gyroscope, a CMOS image sensor, microphone and an electronic compass.
The SmartEyeglass makes use of the above mentioned features along with
the GPS location information provided by the connected Smartphone, in
order to give information most optimized to the user’s current
circumstances.
Technical overview of the SmartEyeglass prototype

The technology giant has made use of its unique hologram optics
technology in order to develop a phenomenal lens that can achieve high
transparency of 85% and thickness of just 3.0 mm, all this has been made
possible without the use of half mirrors that can act as obstruction in
the user’s vision. The monochrome display of the SmartEyeglass makes
sure that high luminance of up to 1,000 cd per meter square is achieved
even when the energy consumption is lower than a color display. This
high luminance and low energy consumption delivers a screen with clear
readability to the user so that he/she can read text easily in a wide
range of environments.
At the announcement, Sony also demonstrated
some preloaded apps on the SmartEyeglass. A Localive app provides
social feeds aggregation and distribution for surrounding local area
whereas its-mo NAVI for SmartEyeglass app provides pedestrian
navigation. Sony has also announced the availability of a dedicated

Yesterday, Apple commented
that iOS 8 the user data stored on iPhones or iPads are fully
encrypted, so no one, not even Apple, can access them, even with a court
or government order. This is certainly an interesting point for the
operating system of the Apple company, and Google seem to think the
same. The reason is that a few hours after these statements, the guys at
Google have announced that Android 5.0, the next version of the popular operating system for mobile devices, also have default data encryptio.
As we say, by this
measure, the data stored on devices with newer versions of iOS and
Android will be completely inaccessible, unless the person has the
correct password. Three years ago, Google already offers the ability to
encrypt our data Phones with Android installed, but this measure, it
simply ceases to be a possibility , becoming a default feature. As a
result, all users will benefit from this improved safety, because until
now, it was an option that activated only those with technical
expertise.
Undoubtedly, the two
companies that dominate the market for mobile operating systems take
such measures is something to behold. Anything that increases the
security and privacy of user data is welcome.
HTC hasn't made a tablet since 2011 or a Nexus device since 2010, but
pretty soon both lacunas will be brought to an end by the launch of a
new device: the Nexus 9. Rumored over the summer and confirmed by The Wall Street Journal's sources today, the Nexus 9 tablet will mark a revival of the Google-HTC partnership that produced the original Nexus One device. The Journal
says that HTC engineers have been flying back and forth between
Mountain View and their Taiwanese base as the two companies collaborate
on the development of the new 9-inch device.
Earlier this month, a patent lawsuit filed by Nvidia against Qualcomm and Samsung mentioned
that "the HTC Nexus 9, expected in the third quarter of 2014, is also
expected to use the Tegra K1." Once that note was spotted, however, the
document was swiftly revised to expunge the Nexus 9's name, with the
current complaint on Nvidia's website carrying a later stamp of
September 11th. Even without the WSJ's corroboration today,
therefore, there's sufficient evidence of the Nexus 9's existence and
upcoming release. Knowing that it'll be powered by the K1 processor also
suggests that it'll be closer in nature to the high-end Nexus 10 built
by Samsung than the more budget-conscious Nexus 7 line from Asus.
The imminent release of the Nexus 9 has also been confirmed by sources speaking to The Verge.
No further specs or details are known for sure just yet, but it's
reasonable to expect Google will unveil its new tablet alongside the
full public release of the big Android L update. Announced at Google I/O in June and scheduled to be available in the fall, Android L marks a major visual redesign
for Google's mobile OS, and the Nexus 9 — designed by HTC and
underpinned by a very capable processor — sounds like a fitting device
to show off the new software in all its glory.
Apple on Wednesday released the latest version of its mobile
operating system for iPhone and iPad users. Some new features include
support for third-party keyboards (such as Swype), Touch ID for
third-party apps, and new widgets for quick app alerts in the
notification center.
iOS 8 is compatible with any iPhone that's 4S
or later, the fifth-generation iPod Touch, or any iPad released from
the second generation on. Some features are specific to the iPhone 6 and
6 Plus, including Apple Pay.
The mobile payments service, which works with the NFC chip in the new
iPhones, will launch through an iOS 8 update for the 6 and 6 Plus in
October. You can download the software by going to the settings
app (Settings > General > Software Update) or by plugging your
device into iTunes. Apple on Friday also will be shipping iOS 8 on its new iPhones, the 6 and 6 Plus.
iOS 8 marks the second major release of Apple's mobile operating system
under the guidance of head designer Jony Ive and new software head Craig
Federighi. Apple CEO Tim Cook fired the prior iOS chief, Scott Forstall,
in October 2012 in part for refusing to take responsibility for Apple's
Maps fiasco. Ive spearheaded a complete redesign of iOS 7, the first
major overhaul since Apple introduced the software with the first iPhone
in 2007.
