The number of telephone subscribers in India has hit 900.05 million at the end of May 2013 from 2013 from 897.02 million at the end of April 2013, registering a monthly growth rate of 0.34%. According to the latest telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the share of urban subscribers has decreased to 60.59% from 60.71% whereas share of rural subscribers has increased from 39.29% to 39.41% in the month of May 2013.
According to the TRAI, private operators hold 88.18% of the wireless market share (based on subscriber base) where as BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU operators hold only 11.82% market share. Users have continued to extensively use the Mobile Number Portability services. As per the data reported by the service providers, by the end of May 2013 about 93.56 million subscribers have submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their mobile number.
