Facebook Adds Twitter-like 'Trending Topics' Feature

In a move that echoes Twitter, Facebook is adding a feature to its service that lets users know the topics of discussion that are trending among the site's 1.2 billion users, whether it's the death of a world leader or the Oscars. Users in the US, UK, India, Canada and Australia will begin seeing a list of trending topics on the right side of their Facebook pages in coming weeks. It will be available in more countries later on.

Facebook, which signaled last year that it would introduce trending topics at some point, said Thursday that the topics people see will be tailored to the user's interests and location. On Thursday afternoon, two users saw topics that included the Academy Awards, American Idol and Republican Sen. David Vitter from Louisiana. Unlike Twitter, which simply lists topics, Facebook's trending section explains why a particular topic is trending. In this case, the 2014 Academy Award nominations were announced, American Idol named new judges and promised a new attitude and Vitter introduced a bill that would require people show photo IDs to make purchases with food stamps.

Facebook is already seen as a place where users go to find out what their friends and family are up to. Stuhar said learning that a friend got married or discovering what his friends are doing on a Friday night is "certainly news," but Facebook has a "much broader vision of where we want news feed to go in the future."

Nokia Normandy's Custom Android UI Screenshots Leaked

We have already heard about Nokia's rumoured Normandy's UI, but now, new leaked screenshots seem to have revealed new details of the yet-to-be-announced first Nokia Android device. The new leaked screenshots of the Normandy's UI purportedly reveals the home screen and the notifications page. Notably, the home screen panel's leaked screenshot includes apps for dialer, message, contacts, internet, Twitter, Skype, MixRadio, Here Maps, Camera app, Plants Vs. Zombies, Gallery, Vine, Facebook, Calculator, Calendar, Alarms, Music, Downloads, Radio, Viber, Opera and WeChat. It's worth pointing out that the home screen of the alleged Normandy looks very similar to the tiles-based UI seen on Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices.

Another leaked screenshot of the Nokia Normandy reveals the possible notifications page which is very reminiscent to Asha phone's Fastlane, which is the new Nokia Asha phone's home screen. The leaked notifications page reveals alerts for the alarm clock, calendar, missed calls or messages. There is also a 'Recent' section, which we assume shows the apps that were recently used by the user. The new leaked screenshots also show the dual-SIM support on top left of the screen.

A Twitter user named @picturepan2 posted an image that supposedly revealed the second engineering prototype of the alleged Nokia Normandy Android phone, with a live image showing the Android operating system. There was no word on the version, and a proprietary launcher was also visible.

Microsoft to Unveil Windows 9 in April: Report

Microsoft is to unveil Windows 9 in April in an effort to step up its game in the increasingly competitive market for tablet and laptop computers, according to a report on Monday by prominent Microsoft blogger Paul Thurrott.

The report said that the software giant was pushing through the upgrade to mitigate the poor reception of Windows 8. That operating system, first release in 2012, attempts to bridge the gap between traditional Windows laptops and tablets powered by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. But it has been largely shunned by consumers unsure of how to use the hybrid software.

According to Thurrott the new OS would address the biggest criticism of Windows 8, the absence of the traditional start menu. It would also reintroduce the old-style desktop which was ditched in favour of Microsoft’s confusing Metro design, the report said.

The new design, codenamed “Threshold”, will be unveiled at Microsoft’s BUILD developer conference in April, with plans to release the software to market a year later, the report said.
The company is searching for a replacement for outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer. He announced his departure last year following widespread criticism for failing to prepare the PC-reliant company for the switch to smartphones and tablet computers.

AMD Brings Full Android OS Experience to Windows PCs

AMD has announced a new milestone in their collaboration with BlueStacks, a joint solution that brings the complete Google Android OS experience to Microsoft Windows- based tablets, 2-in-1s, notebooks and desktops. Optimisations for the fourth generation AMD APU in BlueStacks provide a complete, Android user interface and extensive support for Android apps for entertainment and productivity.

“Users whose devices and preferences span the two ecosystems no longer have to face device-specific restrictions on the benefits of one ecosystem or the other because AMD and BlueStacks have created a seamless user experience between the operating systems. “Now users have access to all the apps — games, communications and content consumption — they love on their Android mobile devices right at their fingertips, while getting important productivity tasks or high-end PC gaming accomplished on their Windows PC.”

The new version of BlueStacks running on a Windows PC powered by fourth generation AMD APUs offers:

•    A familiar Android user interface, including settings, configuration and customization controls;
•    The ability to run Android apps within a window or at full-screen resolution leveraging direct access to AMD graphics processing power;
•    Support for hundreds of thousands of Android apps direct from various Android app stores, as well as synchronization between the same apps being run on the user’s stand-alone Android devices.
•    Seamless interoperability through direct file sharing that enables Android apps to access files stored within the Windows file system.

“We’re working with AMD to build the next great PC and AMD’s industry-leading hardware allows for a more flexible experience with Android apps on the PC for end-users,” says Rosen Sharma, CEO, BlueStacks. “AMD shares our vision of Mobile Plus in providing users with easy access to their favourite Android games, mobile apps and productivity tools from all their devices and moving towards a more open/shared ecosystem.”

The latest version of BlueStacks allows consumers to sync Android apps from a mobile device to a PC with FoneLink, a cloud-based service that enables an AMD Windows-based PCs to become an extension of Android mobile devices and vice versa. BlueStacks also adds support for AMD virtualization hardware so that multiple operating systems and their applications can run simultaneously on the same computer.

Intel to Officially Support Android and Windows Dual-booting Systems

We have already started seeing it and now here is the confirmation from the horse’s mouth. Intel has officially said that their processors will work on dual-boot computers that run both Android and Windows OS. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich recently said at the CES 2014 that Intel is now the first microprocessor company to support devices that support the dual-boot OS feature.

Consumers using such systems will be able to switch between Windows and Android with just a press of a button. We did see this feature earlier on the Asus Transformer Book Trio which was launched in India last month. The convertible tablet can dual boot on Windows 8 and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

This is a welcoming feature no doubt, but the success of these devices is still dodgy. Consumers will definitely love the access to both the OS on a single device, but a lot depends on the functionality as well as flexibility. Just recently, Micromax announced a new tablet called the Canvas Lap Tab which dual boots on Windows 8 and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

CES 2014: LG Unveils 4K OLED TVs, Life Band Touch Fitness Wristband

LG Electronics decided to kick things off at this year's CES by showing off its latest range of 4K OLED TV's. Part of the EC9800 series, it has unveiled a 55', 65' and 77' variant of its latest 4k OLED technology. The 77 inch OLED is called the 77EC9800, has a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels and a pixel density which is four times as many as High Definition. One of the highlights of 4k is the fact that you can sit closer than a 1080p and not see a pixelated structure, something similar to Apple's Retina display. However, according to CNET's Andrew Hoyle, the curved screen featured in the LG lineup is quite glossy and is successful only to a certain degree at reducing reflections.

The new high end TV's mentioned above will also feature an upgraded Motion Remote. Though much has not been revealed about the TV, LG has confirmed that the EC9800 series will include HDMI 2.0 and HEVC decoding.

Meanwhile, LG has finally made its foray in the wearable technology segment, as the Korean manufacturer announced its Life Band Touch fitness wristband. However, the pricing and availability is yet to be announced.

LG's new Life Band Touch can sync with Android and iOS devices via Bluetooth 4.0, though not much has been detailed regarding its compatibility with smartphones, tablets or even both. Notably, the latest wearable from LG can track physical activities such as steps taken, calories consumed or the amount of distance covered. It features an OLED touch display which can work as a watch and shows notifications from connected device. Along with that, LG has also introduced heart beat earphones ( Heart Rate Earphone), which according to a few sources, can check the user's blood flow in the ear.

CES 2014: A Digital Bluetooth-enabled Toothbrush Showcased

Kolibree has unveiled world's first internet connected toothbrush at the CES 2014 in Las Vegas. The smart toothbrush will analyze the users brushing habits and is aimed at improving dental hygiene.
The Kolibree toothbrush comes with a built in sensor that detects how much tartar is being removed in a brushing. It records the customers brushing activity and communicates the information wirelessly to a smartphone app.

The device from French-based startup Kolibree aims “to reinvent oral care,” according to co-founder Loic Cessot. “The technology in the industry has not evolved for years,” Cessot told AFP. “The idea is not to brush stronger, but smarter. When you use a normal toothbrush you never really know what you’ve cleaned. It might be 30 percent. The only person who really knows is the dentist.”

The device will go on sale later this year and will "tell you whether you brushed long enough and reached the hard-to-reach but important parts of your teeth and gums" stated Cessot. Kolibree started by Cessot and former Microsoft and Google executive Thomas Serval, will launch the brush later this year along with a free smartphone app via Kickstarter. The smart toothbrush will be available from $99 to $200 depending on the model.

Mobile Malware Threats to Continue to Increase in 2014: Trend Micro

According to experts, cyber security will remain a growing concern in 2014 with mobile malware on the rise. A recent report by Trend Micro foresees potential threats in 2014 and possible solutions to combat them. This year is all about mobile banking. Unfortunately, we can also expect mobile threats like man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks to increase in 2014. Android will remain the most dominant OS in the market. But this dominance will continue to be exploited, as we predict the volume of malicious and high-risk Android apps to reach 3 million by the end of 2014.”

Thakkar added that business should look into multiple BOYD solutions to prevent cyber attacks. He stated that enterprises should look at data security from multiple dimensions including internal firewalls and intrusion prevention systems, securing Wi-Fi etc. He added that companies should re-look at their security architecture and rebuild it to fit BYOD needs.

Global Security Software maker MacAfee stated in a recent report that enterprises should move from single security solution for issues like bring your own device (BYOD) to other solutions available. The report added that companies need to adopt advanced threat defense solutions so that they can respond to cyber threats faster. Trend Micro states that mobile banking will be the target of malware and the basic two step verification process will no longer be enough. The firm warns organizations to expect major data breaches once a month in 2014. MacAfee added that data centers may become the prime targets for cyber attacks and should improve their security to protect against potential threats.

Nokia's Budget Android Device 'Normandy' Still in Development: Reports

Nokia's highly anticipated rumored Android phone, dubbed 'Normandy', might still be alive and kicking, according to @eveleaks, as a new tweet by the serial leakster displays the following message loud and clear,"The reports of Normandy's death have been greatly exaggerated."  Bearing in mind the fact that in the past @eveleaks have provided fairly accurate information about rumours and speculations and it's a no brainer if this rumour also turns out to be true.

The dev team behind Normandy is lead by Egil Kvaleberg and Peter Skillman, the same people behind the Asha range of smartphones. The images of the Nokia Normandy point to a 4-inch display along with a dual-SIM variant, with a product code said to be RM-980.

Researchers Develop a New Technique to Identify Faces from Reflections

Scientists have developed a new forensics technique in which they were able to extract images from the corneal reflections of an individual of people standing nearby. The technique can be useful while conducting criminal investigations. Researchers Rob Jenkins from the University of York in Britain, and collaborator Christie Kerr, from the University of Glasgow, conducted the experiment in which they found that faces can be reconstructed from images taken of an individual with commercial digital cameras and enhanced with off-the-shelf image-processing software.

For the experiment, the scientists used a high-end digital camera and sat five volunteers for a passport-photo-like shot, using studio lighting. All the five people where in the room even when not being clicked and stood close to the photographer to be included in the reflection off the subject's corneas. Then they asked the subjects to identify images from the reflections as well as the original digital images. Nine out of 10 volunteers were able to correctly identify from the corneal images. The group which was familiar with the five subjects were able to identify the persons with 84 percent success rate and those unfamiliar with the subjects in the photographs were able to identify with 71 percent success rate.

"The pupil of the eye is like a black mirror. To enhance the image, you have to zoom in and adjust the contrast. A face image that is recovered from a reflection in the subject's eye is about 30,000 times smaller than the subject's face. Our findings thus highlight the remarkable robustness of human face recognition, as well as the untapped potential of high-resolution photography," Jenkins said.
